<audiocourses> Hi dani.. brb
<Danicook> ok
<audiocourses> hi dani..
<audiocourses> so how ya doing man?
<Danicook> i'm good thanks, how are you?
<Danicook> finally uploaded the classical edit
<audiocourses> Good here also thanks... start of the holidays here for me so it's a great time :)
<audiocourses> Yes I was just listening to it.
<Danicook> i'm on holiday this week as well
<Danicook> do you like the cheesy voice, lol
<Danicook> i don't really talk like that, lol
<audiocourses> yes you do!
<audiocourses> lol

<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> It's good though the processing was cute.
<Danicook> my girlfriend nearly wet em when she heard it

<Danicook> the processing was what?
<ben_m> hey everyone, sorry for being late
<audiocourses> No worrie dben
<aido> Hello sorry Im late
<Danicook> hi ben
<Danicook> hi aido
<audiocourses> the processing was cute.. as in sweet, was nice..
<Danicook> n
<audiocourses> I like
<Danicook> ah, lol
<audiocourses> Hi aidan.
<Danicook> was it ok though?
<aido> Hi
<audiocourses> dani yes it was very good... the level reductions in the music make way for the nicely processed voice.
<audiocourses> it was very good.
<Danicook> thank you
<Danicook> i was going to compress it, but i decided on automation instead
<Danicook> ran it through mic modeller as well, lol, just to be fussy
<audiocourses> I could sense that automation... I could tell it had a human hand in it as the fades are variable
<audiocourses> what mic model is it?
<ben_m> mic modeller - how else can you make a tandy pzm sound like a Neumann U87!
<Danicook> antares, software for afterwards and a dbx pro vocal strip
<audiocourses> ahh ok
<audiocourses> It really is a sweet sound, well done.
<Danicook> i've got crap monitors here, so it's difficult to eq
<Danicook> thanks chris
<Danicook> can i have a job? lol
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> What's wrong wiv the one ya got?
<Danicook> have you listened to the vocal edit yet?
<audiocourses> no is that ready go also?
<Danicook> it doesn't pay enough, lol
<Danicook> yes it should be uploaded
<audiocourses> as a zip or mp3?
<Danicook> mp3
<audiocourses> brb
<Danicook> k
<Danicook> i had to rename it .mp3 after it downloaded, when i tested it

<Danicook> welcome back
<ben_m> f**** Internet Explorer
<Danicook> lol
<Danicook> internet exploder
<audiocourses> dani where is this exactly?
<ben_m> lol
<Danicook> err, in my folder?
<Danicook> i bet it's gone, lol
<audiocourses> i only see the one is that not the classical edit?
<Danicook> it's gone! i'll upload again
<audiocourses> k
<audiocourses> how ya doing ben?
<ben_m> not bad, just been building an audio pc - its a bit of a beast!
<Danicook> uploading now, it's called homework2
<audiocourses> you and those machines man!!
<audiocourses> ok dani
<Danicook> what's the spec ben?
<ben_m> its a P4 2.53GHz with DDR400 RAM, Gigabyte mobo with 4 IDE Channels, Hammerfall card and Matrox G550 dualhead GFX card running XP Pro
<Danicook> nice
<audiocourses> I'm weeping
<Danicook> how are you going to use the RAID?
<ben_m> yes, its pretty nice - i'm not at all jealous!
<Danicook> oh, is it not yours?
<ben_m> the RAID on this particular card can be 'disabled' but the IDE channels can still be used for IDE devices of ATA100/133
<audiocourses> Ben builds them all the time Dani..
<Danicook> it's just about the same as mine, but i've only got a SB Live Platinum at home
<ben_m> if any of you have broadband and play guitar, check this link out http://www.npr.org/display_pages/features/feature_1229622.html
<Danicook> i've got RAID on mine, but just use it as extra IDE's
<ben_m> its enough to make you want to give up
<ben_m> yeah, same here Dani, its the way forward
<Danicook> why, what is it?
<ben_m> it's a guy called charlie hunter playing this hybrid bass/guitar but its just mind blowing
<ben_m> not my kind of music but exceptional playing, playing bass and melody
<ben_m> its the video on the page
<Danicook> chris, the mp3 is uploaded
<ben_m> gutting....
<aido> I must check it out
<audiocourses> yeah getting it now dani
<Danicook> i'm not going to tewll you what happened while i ws editing that one, lol
<Danicook> i had a blonde moment
<audiocourses> Good job my girlf didn't read that comment lol
<ben_m> hehe
<Danicook> mine too! lol
<ben_m> good job blondes cant read eh? lol
<audiocourses> fuck sake!!
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> you gota love them though, just don't let em near the VCR, lol
<audiocourses> You play guitar Aido?
<aido> nice one
<aido> Bass
<audiocourses> Nice one... any good?
<aido> Nah I just get by-havent played with anyone for some years
<Danicook> i wonder where nancy and mike are?
<audiocourses> Not sure have not heard..
<audiocourses> You played in a couple bands in previous years Aido?
<aido> Yeah-none of them amounted to much-I always seemed to find got in the way.I left it lie for a while then started messing about with a drum machine a few years backonwhere egs
<audiocourses> i see.
<audiocourses> did you get a chnace to have a go at the practical aido?
<aido> No-I was wondering what you guys were on about-where was the details
<audiocourses> IN the Live Workshop transcript
<audiocourses> from last session
<Danicook> what was the phase check thing for?
<aido> Shit I didnt read it-my fault -Ill try it in next few days
<audiocourses> Yeah I tink you will find you should be able to have a crack, though I understand you are without audio software.
<audiocourses> Dani, that pahse check thing is just a present from me..
<Danicook> ah, well it made my ears hurt, lol good present
<audiocourses> (ben need to update my real audio for that download)
<audiocourses> lol, why did you have the volume cranked up too much?
<ben_m> cool chris, check it out soon though, its enough to make you take up the triangle
<Danicook> no, just the out of phase bit, the way i've got my speakers situated
<audiocourses> downloading now ben...
<audiocourses> update.
<audiocourses> Where are they situated?
<Danicook> the ones on my comp are directly to each side of my head and a sub on the floor
<audiocourses> ok
<audiocourses> I just listned to your edit..
<Danicook> (it's because i've got the comp speaker running from the rear surround out on souncard, so i can use the main monitors when i'm using the triton and get surround sound)
<Danicook> how was it?
<audiocourses> it was pretty good..
<audiocourses> a good overall sound
<Danicook> i feel a but coming on
<audiocourses> lol
<aido> sounds painful
<audiocourses> not so much a but
<Danicook> but it should have been translated to chinese?
<audiocourses> Im trying to work out why you got uneven peaks...
<audiocourses> you got this file ben?
<ben_m> no, i'll go and grab it now
<Danicook> on the stereo you mean?
<audiocourses> Need your analysis...
<audiocourses> Wanna talk us through what you did Dani... it's good! Just some techy things to chat about in a min
<Danicook> you want me to talk you thru it now?
<audiocourses> Do you mind?
<Danicook> no, ok
<Danicook> put it into SX, cut the mistakes, coughs and other artifacts
<Danicook> re-aligned the sounds so they fitted the timing
<Danicook> used a noise gate,
<Danicook> compressor
<Danicook> and mic modeller (fussy)
<Danicook> oh and a denoiser as well
<Danicook> i even filled some of the gaps with uniform noise to give it flow
<Danicook> and so the wave didn't drop out
<Danicook> i think i also drpped the fader on one bit as well
<audiocourses> got ya.
<Danicook> i wa torn between cutting the breaths and leaving them in
<audiocourses> Yes that's always a trade off situation
<Danicook> i felt it left me breathless when i cut them, strangly
<audiocourses> yeah it's an odd effect isn't it.
<Danicook> so i cut them anyway, to see if it had the same effect on others, lol
<ben_m> is this the spoken word thing
<Danicook> yes
<audiocourses> yes ben
<audiocourses> pull it up in wave editor
<Danicook> no, don't ben, it's a trick!
<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> Ive got the original up... and your mp3 dani
<Danicook> ok
<audiocourses> Now the thing I notice as being obvious is a drastic difference in level.
<Danicook> and you're amazed how much better mine sounds? (waves a jedi's hand)
<Danicook> mine is lower?
<audiocourses> oh much much
<audiocourses> I'd say about 6dB
<audiocourses> which is a doubling
<Danicook> i think that may be a prob at my end
<Danicook> i had the speakers up and down when i was editing, to listen for noise and i guess i didn't have them levelled right when i was mastering
<audiocourses> also there are some "random" peaks or "spikes", which would prevent you normalising particularly well.
<Danicook> though it was reading right in the master level indicator,
<Danicook> hmmm,
<Danicook> well, it was my first go at something like this
<audiocourses> Don't feel at fault it is good.. but we now need to pick on it in order to imrprove. :)
<Danicook> yes, i understand that, i like constructive critisism
<Danicook> it's the way to learn
<audiocourses> The procesors that have been used have kind shifted the wavform and induced many negative peaks..
<audiocourses> you notice they don;t appear on the positive side.
<audiocourses> How did you compress to mp3?
<Danicook> using sx, mastered directly to mp3,
<Danicook> what are you looking at the file with?
<audiocourses> something in that chain of processing is "bad algorithms"...
<audiocourses> I'm comparing the original file with your version.. have tried it in two applications.
<Danicook> i don't follow you, what software are you looking at the file with?
<audiocourses> makes no difference..
<audiocourses> sound forge.
<Danicook> no, litrally, i mean how are you analysing the file?
<Danicook> are you using a spectum anylyser?
<audiocourses> I'm analyising visually and with my ears, plus statistics, though the ears are the best methods lol
<Danicook> or just looking at the actual waveform?
<Danicook> i didn't check it visually, i didn't think to, doh!
<audiocourses> you got it up ben?
<audiocourses> Yeah it's a great thing to do..
<ben_m> yeah, just listening to your comments there
<Danicook> I'LL DO IT FROM NOW ON, LOL
<audiocourses> Dani why don;t you cal it up in a stereo wave editor
<audiocourses> two windows
<audiocourses> yours and the original
<Danicook> haven't got one, well, sx
<audiocourses> ahh...
<audiocourses> you'd be wise to think of obtaining one.
<ben_m> yes, i agree with chris there
<audiocourses> essentiallly this would be thought of as a mastering excersie.
<audiocourses> And personally, I perform one edit and then save it as a new file..
<audiocourses> only one each time, save and then reflect
<Danicook> really?
<audiocourses> with each reflection I check for levels and e.q against the original
<audiocourses> yes really.
<Danicook> i see
<audiocourses> if I am happy I move on.
<Danicook> sounds like a good system
<audiocourses> this cross referencing will avoid over processing, and with sometimes "budget$" plug-ins
<audiocourses> you'll find the audio can be "butchered" lol
<Danicook> i've never thought of doing that before
<audiocourses> The work (on a creative level is very good though)
<audiocourses> I can see yuo have tried really hard to eliminate background noise..
<audiocourses> and essentiall inserted silence
<Danicook> i sort of think about what i want to do before hand, then do it in the order i think best,
<Danicook> probably the wrong way of doing it
<audiocourses> For a job like this I would probably end up with 20 different files
<audiocourses> a catalogue if you like of processes
<Danicook> yes, i was trying to get rid of the noise
<audiocourses> You ok Aido? lol
<ben_m> brb
<Danicook> k
<aido> yeahjust listenin
<audiocourses> You miught have thought of giving the whole thing some "air" reverb just eliviate some of the abrupt silence/voice changes.
<ben_m> back
<audiocourses> But is good.. but you realy must watch out for the level difference.. that's a real no go..
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> well, origionally, when i cut the coughs and stuff, i filled the gaps with ajoining noise
<ben_m> yes, you were essentially juggling plates, a longer release time on the gate would have been less abrupt but may have sounded unpleasant
<ben_m> I think that as chris suggested, a very subtle reverb would have 'painted' over the gaps
<Danicook> i did try a verb, but i thought it took it away from origional too much and thought i might get into trouble
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> with who?
<ben_m> hehe, 100 lines - i must not use reverb
<Danicook> god
<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> who's that?
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> he makes samplers
<audiocourses> oHHHH Mr Emu Akai
<audiocourses> Hey Aido bet you can't wait to have a crack at this practical..?
<aido> I just cant wait!
<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> he he
<audiocourses> Spo to summarise are you clear about what needs improving dani?
<Danicook> i've just looked at the two wavforms in sx
<audiocourses> ahh and what's your thoughts?
<Danicook> well, smooth out the silences
<Danicook> i can't tell the bloody difference, lol
<audiocourses> wait I'll take a screen shot for you here
<Danicook> ok, thanks

<Danicook> do you think it could be anything to do with being coverted to 32bit then back down to 16bit
<Danicook> hiy nancy
<resol69> Hi
<Danicook> how are you?
<resol69> Pretty good, had a good week. how about you?
<Danicook> yeah, not bad thanks
<audiocourses> HI nancy
<audiocourses> http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/daniel/ci00007.jpg
<audiocourses> there ya go dani
<resol69> I just uploaded my edit. Still having problems when I convert to mp3. The volume gets lowered. Also, cannot change the file name. It's still "filename"
<Danicook> i'll check it out
<Danicook> see! look, nancy's is the same!
<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> How did the editing go generally nancy?
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> bloody blaming me, lol
<audiocourses> Yes I know nancy's system has had problems with mp3 conversions.
<ben_m> quick point, the MP3 algoprithims included in sequencers aren't the best
<audiocourses> aww Dani, not blaming ya.
<audiocourses> good point though ben
<ben_m> best off going for something like the LAME algorithim which you can get freeware
<resol69> Pretty good. Not problems getting rid of the breathing and coughing. I was able to lower some of the high pitched noise that was behind some of the talking, but couldn't get rid of it totally.
<audiocourses> yeah tricky old bugger isn't it?
<audiocourses> :)
<Danicook> i see what you mean now chris,
<audiocourses> You do Dani? good..
<resol69> I don't hear it too much when I play it through speakers, but when you use headphones you can really hear it!
<Danicook> it's the mp3 algorithim
<audiocourses> Probably.
<Danicook> definately, lol, i think, lol
<resol69> Maybe we could try to convert to wav and then to mp3?
<audiocourses> They are not particularly hard to manufacture and alot of cowboys have jumped on the bandwagon.
<resol69> Chrish, what is that noise on the original file?
<audiocourses> No I think you should take Bens advice
<audiocourses> And find a good one
<audiocourses> It is my neighbour sharpening his knives..
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> lol
<audiocourses> At the very least use a wave editor once converetd to mp3 to double check what's going on after conversion..
<Danicook> well, i've always written off anything i've mp3'd, quality wise, and i assumed that you would have never heard a good conversion either, so i letit go, my bad
<audiocourses> It's a fair enough point, mp3 are not good.. but we live in a world with them.
<audiocourses> unfortunately
<ben_m> there are some good options out there - its best to read up as some are better at different bit rates
<ben_m> some areonly good over 192kbps
<audiocourses> Nancy is your ready to donwload?
<Danicook> when i was converting my songs to go on mp3.com, i tried about 10 different programs
<Danicook> they were all crap
<resol69> yes, it's in my directory under filename.
<audiocourses> funnily enough Sound Forge has a reasonably good one.
<audiocourses> is it saved as .mp3 or .zip?
<Danicook> don't you have to buy it extra though?
<resol69> zip
<audiocourses> errr probably
<Danicook> no, that's the wavelab
<Danicook> oh, has your verion got a crack in it? lol
<audiocourses> what's that mean dani?
<audiocourses> lol
<Danicook> cough
<Danicook> btw, have you got SX 1.3?
<audiocourses> i got 1.02 dani
<Danicook> proper? dongled? if not, then you can get a really stable 1.3 dongleless, and the midi editor works and no annoying error 0000's
<audiocourses> listening to yours now nancy.. you got nancy's ben?
<ben_m> getting it now
<audiocourses> very good!
<resol69> Thanks :)
<audiocourses> very good edits and flow..
<resol69> My boyfirend is very happy he doesn't have to hear it anymore. :) LOL
<audiocourses> tonal texture is good... and it has a natural feel
<audiocourses> lol I bet!
<audiocourses> However!.
<audiocourses> Time to pick a hole.
<audiocourses> :)
<resol69> let me have it!
<audiocourses> lEVELS
<audiocourses> what happened?
<ben_m> caps lock gremlin
<audiocourses> lol
<resol69> The levels don't the sound same on the mp3 as they did in pro tools
<resol69> Are they too low?
<audiocourses> extremely low, again in comparision to original file
<audiocourses> much like Dani's
<resol69> Yes, that's what I was talking about earlier. It's the mp3 gremlin!
<audiocourses> http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/nancy/ci00008.jpg
<audiocourses> that's a screen shot of your Nancy
<audiocourses> check out the difference.
<resol69> YIKES!
<audiocourses> yup
* Danicook has quit IRC (Ping Timeout)
<audiocourses> big init? lol
<resol69> Yup.
<audiocourses> tut tut lol
<audiocourses> Golder rule number 1. Always check mp3 after coding in a Digital audio editor.
<audiocourses> You got it ben?
<audiocourses> I do really like the work though nancy, it's got a really good sound and feel to it.
<ben_m> yeah, really good noise reduction of background noise
* Danicook has joined #audiocourses
<Danicook> got booted
<resol69> :)
<audiocourses> Really is very good editing for sure!
<ben_m> what I noticed however was that sometimes the first few ms of each vocal part sounded a bit 'rushed' by that I mean it sounds like the gate or whatever missed out the first few ms
<audiocourses> Just cover yourself with those levels nancy
<ben_m> only a minor criticism though
<resol69> Yup, I'll check the gate also Ben.
* Danicook is now known as Guest46501
<Guest46501> hang on
<ben_m> some software gates can 'read ahead'
<ben_m> i'm hanging on
* Guest46501 has left #audiocourses
<audiocourses> Are you happy with the feedback on tat nancy or need some more?
* Dani2 has joined #audiocourses
<Dani2> i thinki'm back
<audiocourses> hehe
<resol69> That's good thanks,
<audiocourses> OK so lets move on..
<audiocourses> phew.. lol
<Dani2> ok
<audiocourses> Aido is chomping to get going with that one .. lol
<audiocourses> huh aido?
<aido> ah....yeah
<audiocourses> All in all very good, but lets all make sure we get on top of this level discrepancy completey.
<audiocourses> So ben how ws MT this wek?
<audiocourses> Looked a bit thin?
<ben_m> yes, its been disappointing again
<ben_m> on the whole
<Dani2> well, i'm glad i came on here to feel good anyway, lol
<ben_m> hehe
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Our job is to kick ass...
<audiocourses> It's worse in a studio huh nancy?
<resol69> Yes! Certainly.
<audiocourses> I must say I am a little concerned though at this point about MT..
<Dani2> thought we both did ok, :(
<Dani2> all, sorry
<ben_m> yes, aidan made a late surge!
<audiocourses> this exam is a tough old bugger..
<resol69> It's much harder to find info for that online and in the recording textbookd I have.
<audiocourses> And we really need a concerted effort to "up" the level..
<aido> sorry left it til the end..I did learn a lot about sampling which Ive never looked into beforejm
<audiocourses> Yes nancy I understand that one..
<ben_m> mike seemed to have some problem i couldnt ascertain about cutting and pasting text
<resol69> When you pasted the text, all those exclamation marks came though as a graphic, but I was able to delete them.
<resol69> Ben, any hints on resources for finding info on the tech stuff?
<ben_m> right, i know they may have come out as ASCII but I presumed they could be edited out easily enough - however, I'll try to lay off the exclamation marks from now on (!)
<resol69> You better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
<Dani2> lol
<ben_m> nancy - for the MT stuff there are several kinds of resources
<ben_m> Equipment manuals are very good
<ben_m> There are MANY websites that cover a lot of the MT topics but they just require som intelligent search engine usage
<ben_m> Software versions of hardware are also very good for things like samplers that you may not have access to in the hardware field
<aido> I agree-Ive found Sound On Sounds search link very goodb
<ben_m> I do understand it is maybe a little harder to find answers than for RT
<audiocourses> Also if you have software installed on your system... the HELP file can be a beauty!
<ben_m> yes indeed!
<resol69> hmm. Thanks.
<ben_m> do you find it quite hard to find some of the info guys?
<Dani2> yes
<ben_m> what resources do you rely on?
<Dani2> in the detail you want yes,
<Dani2> ask me what an LFO is and i'll tell you, ask me for a page and half on one and i may struggle
<Dani2> i use either my own knowledge/experience, and when i'm stuch, i use google
<ben_m> Its not just about defining terms, it about understanding why they are needed, how they are used etc. But I do take your point
<Dani2> i thought we did that
<audiocourses> Perhaps if we give you more direct questions...
<audiocourses> you could then possibly search more specifically?
<aido> more in depth answers ?y
<Dani2> as long as mines not "how would you record a bassoon on the moon?"
<ben_m> well, i was about to say I cold ask very specific questions but the answers may not be any easier to find, but we could try it this week if you want and see how you find it
<ben_m> lol
<audiocourses> lol
<Dani2> if we don't like it, can i load my life from a previous save point?
<audiocourses> yes a good idea Ben.. try the short answer approach this week
<ben_m> hehe, restore points have been disabled
<Dani2> DOH!
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> this week RT is moving into slightly new topics
<Dani2> oh?
<audiocourses> yes week 7
<Dani2> will we like it?
<audiocourses> RT Sound Effects and Speech
<Dani2> cool
<audiocourses> so I think a week off in terms of practical.. in less you would like another?
<Dani2> no, you just rip them to shreds, lol
<audiocourses> lol
<resol69> Depends on how many MT questions we get :)
<Dani2> :-)
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> lets aim for 50 for each module
<audiocourses> ok?
<resol69> ok
<Dani2> no, 10
<resol69> uhh, yeah 10
<Dani2> is this like haggling? 5
<audiocourses> not enough
<ben_m> I'll upload the sampling practical tonight too
<ben_m> aidan, ideally you'll need to access a computer for this but if this is not possible I will think of a way around it
<Dani2> if you want quick answers then yeah 50, if you want war and peace, 1
<ben_m> my question this week - build a sampler out of a shoebox and elastic band
<Dani2> lol
<audiocourses> lol
<Dani2> does it have to have SCSI?
<ben_m> yes and firewire
<Dani2> shit
<ben_m> :)
<audiocourses> cool
<aido> Its ok Ive got access to a laptop on an ongoiing basis
<Dani2> you've nicked it
<ben_m> good aidan, that will make this easier
<ben_m> i wondered where mine went...
<Dani2> lol
<aido> No but I have to be a good boy
<audiocourses> ?
<audiocourses> wrong window aido?
<Dani2> i "test" a lot of laptops from work
<audiocourses> ahhh
<Dani2> they get them back though, just in case you were wondering
<resol69> sure they do ;)
<Dani2> lol
<ben_m> when they're out of date - heres that 486 i borrowed back in 92!
<audiocourses> lol
<Dani2> lol,
<resol69> lol
<aido> No its my partners who uses it for her work-my main problem is finding time
<Dani2> more like when i've stuffed the HD, with vodka
<ben_m> hehe
<resol69> Wouldn't it be cool if we could quit our day jobs? :)
<audiocourses> ohhh i like vodka :))
<aido> Nancy that would be very nice
<audiocourses> :)
<Dani2> i've got a nice cold vodka a o next to me, ahhhhh
<ben_m> how the other half live...
<audiocourses> lucky u... im down the off licence soon!
<Dani2> but if we quit our day jobs, my new job would be this
<audiocourses> would be what dani?
<Dani2> (not drinking vodka chatting to folk on the net)
<Dani2> working with pro audio
<audiocourses> ahh..
<ben_m> hehe
<Dani2> though, obviously not vocal edits, eh
<resol69> lol
<audiocourses> hehehe
<audiocourses> choosy huh?
<Dani2> yup, i just want to put reverb on snares,
<audiocourses> get out a bit dude..
<aido> til then just keep doing the lotto
<audiocourses> :)
<Dani2> very specific, but the best in the world, a bit like ken morse, rostrum cameraman
<ben_m> lol
