<audiocourses> Hi Mike good to see you!
<mike_nostradamus> got booted out
<DaniCook> hi mike
<audiocourses> though so
<audiocourses> thought so
<mike_nostradamus> hi again
<ben_m> hello again
<DaniCook> i've just got a DVD writer, so i'm gonna try a 5.1 mix of a song, hehe
<ben_m> excellent dani!
<DaniCook> what's the best software to compile in?
<audiocourses> yeah sounds fantastic
<ben_m> nuendo offers 5.1 support
<audiocourses> Nuendo
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> i can't remember if SX does
<DaniCook> yeah, i've looked for that, but i can't find a moody version of it
<DaniCook> sx does 5.1 mixes, but as 5 or 6 seprate wavs
<mike_nostradamus> well guys I'm having dificullties with the net i'm in a rural area and cable is not available so my time is limited on this wonderful net.The major system is down and i'm 5 miles down the roard on a laptop .so if I cut in and out so be it!!
<DaniCook> ok mike,
<audiocourses> OK Mike thasnks for letting us know we do appreciate you joining us.
<ben_m> do British Telecom run the canadian phone system or what?
<ben_m> :)
<DaniCook> the error i'm getting in exlorer is Error: couldn't copy : non valid file.
<ben_m> hmmm, interesting
<mike_nostradamus> I wish.the beavers do a better job
<audiocourses> what are you trying to upload dani?
<DaniCook> one of the mp3 masters
<audiocourses> put it in a zip try that
<DaniCook> i've tried it as .mp3 and .rar
<DaniCook> i'll zip it and try it
<ben_m> chris - i'm getting that remote name error msg when trying to upload - what causes that?
<audiocourses> The server could be having it's monthly.
<ben_m> ah right, that time
<DaniCook> better get some tampax ram
<ben_m> lol
<DaniCook> is there a limit to filesize?
<audiocourses> nope..
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> hmm, it's just a computer then, nothing new there, lol
<audiocourses> Dani..  send it to me here
<audiocourses> Ill ftp it
<DaniCook> on mirc
<audiocourses> yup
<audiocourses> or e-mail which ever you prefer
<DaniCook> try dcc first
<DaniCook> sending
<DaniCook> request
<audiocourses> got the request didnt like the connection..
<audiocourses> hmm  one more time
<DaniCook> oh, i'll try again
<audiocourses> nah connection failed again.. probably something to do with permisions..
<audiocourses> ah well e-mail..
<DaniCook> ok, what addy?
<audiocourses> edited
<DaniCook> k
<audiocourses> Mike did you get to read the last weeks transcript?
<mike_nostradamus> Ben question for you can you get a compressor with a power supply that does'nt hum?
<mike_nostradamus> yes I did!
<audiocourses> dani I managed to upload a file into the root. /dani.zip
<ben_m> hehe none of the should hum mike - what compressor is doing this?
<mike_nostradamus> the reason I ask i have one which plays havoc with my mics
* DaniCook has quit IRC (Ping Timeout)
<ben_m> right, where is the buzzing? is it the compressor buzzing or is it inteference from the PSU intefering with mics?
<mike_nostradamus> I have  a rolls and its got a built in power supply and my condenser studio mics pick it up
<ben_m> are all your cables balanced?
<mike_nostradamus> it only buzzs when my headphones go on yes my cables are balanced.you know the hum of a transformer from an amplifier
<mike_nostradamus> if i put it in the control room i dont hear it anymore
<ben_m> well, if it only occurs when the headphones are on then it suggests that there is a wiring discrepancy somewhere - where do you plug headphones, into a desk or pc?
<mike_nostradamus> my headphone amp
<ben_m> thats pretty strange. so with no heaphones used the buzz is not there?
<mike_nostradamus> Its clean otherwise.i only hear it in the studio
<ben_m> hmmm, any ideas chris?
<mike_nostradamus> I find it strange also because its on my rack with 6 other  processors
<ben_m> it might just be a 'noisy' psu
<ben_m> have you tried an alternative psu?
* DaniCook has joined #audiocourses
<mike_nostradamus> thats what I'm thinking the power supply is noisy my peavey digital delay rack pro is very noisy
<DaniCook> godammed computer!
<DaniCook> can't bloody e-mail it either
<audiocourses> dani i managed to upload a file to the /root
<audiocourses> which indicates the system is ok
<DaniCook> it's over my mail servers limit
<DaniCook> yeah, i'll have a go at that
<ben_m> i think the best thing to do is try the unit with another psu and work from there - do you have a psu you know is quiet that can be tested?
<audiocourses> upload it  /yourfile.mp3 and I'll move it
<mike_nostradamus> when you sau psu are you saying power supply?
<ben_m> yeah - psu = power supply unit
<DaniCook> i'm uploading as fleetvers3.zip
<mike_nostradamus> anything with external power supply no problem
<mike_nostradamus> this one is an internal power supply
<ben_m> oh, is it an internal psu?
<DaniCook> it's 6.5mb, do you think that's the problem
<mike_nostradamus> yes
<ben_m> sorry, i thought it was external.
<ben_m> i know it sounds tenous but have you tried moving it away from other equipment in the rack?
<ben_m> having some space above and below it?
<audiocourses> I don't think so..  I'll go check..
<audiocourses> brb
<DaniCook> k
<mike_nostradamus> I tryed getting a new one but no one sells them here and yes i tried it by itself and same thing.someone told me to break the ground loop on it sometimes it works
<ben_m> yeah, it may even be a ground problem with the headphone amp
<DaniCook> if it's low power, disconnect the earth
<ben_m> yes, a lot of people have had success by disconnecting ground but I'd have to advise against it for legal purposes.
<ben_m> :)
<mike_nostradamus> maybe I had to do that with my traynor pa amp and it worked but the safety board dont like that to much
<ben_m> are all your mains sockets on the same ring or are there a couple of different rings?
<mike_nostradamus> What do you mean by rings?i'm using 1/4" ring and tip conn
<ben_m> i'm talking about the mains electricity supply in your house. i'm not sure of the terminology for it in canada!
<DaniCook> he means a methos of travel that a current can take makes a ring or loop
<audiocourses> dani try a small file in /root
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> like /yourfile.zip
<DaniCook> it's still having a go at the big file, i'll wait till it gives me an arror
<audiocourses> then it sounds like it's uploading..?
<DaniCook> sounds like it
<audiocourses> :)
<ben_m> mike, have you tried the headphone amp and/or compressor in different mains sockets?
<DaniCook> but i'm not betting money on it, lol
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> safe are you dani?
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> it's errored
<DaniCook> can i swear?
<audiocourses> what;'s iut said?
<audiocourses> what's it said?
<DaniCook> Error: couldn't copy : non valid file
<audiocourses> was it a zip? or mp3?
<DaniCook> zip
<audiocourses> try a tiny one..
<DaniCook> ok
<mike_nostradamus> Yes i have tried them I also have a power conditioner bar to have everything in phase and it lets me know if some thing is drawing to much especially amplifiers
<audiocourses> Mike, replace the compressor with another box in the exact same signal path.
<DaniCook> if i get another error message i'm going to smack my computer in it's face
<ben_m> lol@dani
<DaniCook> it worked with the small file (lucky escape for my computer, who's scared now)
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> mike - can you try/borrow another headphone amp to see if that is the root of the problem - are the headphone amp and compressor on the same mains 'circuit'?
<DaniCook> i reckon it can't handle the big file, the poof
<audiocourses> ok.. so it is a function of either file size.. (pretty sure this is not the case) or it is timeing out..( much more likely)
<DaniCook> could be timing out, i can only upload at 288k a sec
<audiocourses> Ill hunting around in the dark depths of php code to find a time our function..
<audiocourses> wont be a min
<DaniCook> ok
<mike_nostradamus> chrish i've done that and the hum goes away i've replaced it with my zoom muti effects processor. Its the compressor itself the power supply i can hear it without having anything pluged in.the mics are what is picking it up and sending it to the headphone amp
<DaniCook> chris-php hunter, a man on a mission
<ben_m> mike - what was the make and model of the compressor again?
<audiocourses> try now
<mike_nostradamus> time for a new compressor
<ben_m> lol@dani
<DaniCook> ok, big file?
<audiocourses> yup
<DaniCook> to root?
<audiocourses> yup
<DaniCook> ok,
<mike_nostradamus> the compressor is a Rolls compressor limiter gate rp 252 2 channel
<audiocourses> Mike then good at least you know it IS the compressor
<DaniCook> ok computer, don't fail me again (said in D Vader voice, with threatening strangle type motions of hand)
<audiocourses> It could be a shitty connection IN the compressor itself, you can replace transformers (most likely root of buzz) in this case.
<mike_nostradamus> I bought this used i guess it was good for a band for stage work
<audiocourses> Mike, I'd have used it for a book end long before now.
<ben_m> see how cost effective it is to repair against replacing
<audiocourses> Good point Ben.
<ben_m> are nancy and aidan coming today?
<audiocourses> BBC have a through away policy for everything now.
<audiocourses> Nancy said she can't make it..
<mike_nostradamus> Yes I know but I did'nt really know what it was suppose to be used for until recenlty
<audiocourses> Dani I got a good feeling about it this time.
<ben_m> so mike, is your rack of gear in the control room or the live room?
<DaniCook> well chris, at least there is my shitty 64k version for you to rip apart and at least you won't be Billy No-Students-Uploading-any-Work-This-week
<audiocourses> I've listend to that already lol
<mike_nostradamus> I have some in the control room and some in the studio!
<audiocourses> lol dani
<DaniCook> :)
<mike_nostradamus> I just bought a new axe and bought some equip.out of the cont room
<audiocourses> cool mike
<DaniCook> mike, do you mean you bought a guitar, or an actual axe? lol
<ben_m> probably a real axe considering geography
<DaniCook> i was thinking that
<ben_m> chainsaws are the way forward i feel
<DaniCook> for music>
<ben_m> hehe
<ben_m> yeah, thing is they're a bugger to tune
<DaniCook> "Revving Chainsaws" would be a good name for a shit kicker band
<ben_m> lol
<DaniCook> lol
<audiocourses> Hye Mike, how do you cope with this british humour?
<mike_nostradamus> i also bought a new recording program from germany and i bought an actual fender tele nashville series deluxe custom  with 3 pick ups and white pick guard and what a dream to play
<ben_m> mike, did you buy from thomann?
<mike_nostradamus> What british humour?
<audiocourses> Mike this is also british humour... are you friggin loaded? Are you a gansta?
<ben_m> british humour certainly doesnt travel well!
<mike_nostradamus> NO I gotta job selling dope
<audiocourses> LOL
<DaniCook> neither does guinness
<ben_m> man, thats wack
<DaniCook> hey, send me some free samples mike.
<mike_nostradamus> Now that was humour !smoking those beaver tails
<ben_m> lol
<DaniCook> lol
<DaniCook> got the error again chris
<audiocourses> Same error?
<DaniCook> "you've failed me for the last time computer........." strangles computer
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> yes, same error
<DaniCook> can i swear now sir?
<audiocourses> Seems we destined to not hear this..
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> i did 4 bloody versions as well!"
<audiocourses> Oh don't worry I'll get it sorted.
<DaniCook> lol
<audiocourses> But for now move onto the MT one..
<audiocourses> did you do it?
<DaniCook> that's what saddaqm said
<DaniCook> ok
<DaniCook> the mt what?
<audiocourses> Ben?
<ben_m> the practical for starters - only dani completed the task 100%
<ben_m> nancy did 3/4 but havent had anything from mike or aidan
<audiocourses> If you guys want to get chatting about that, Ill try to fix thigns.
<DaniCook> :) *dani smiles smugly, although deep down he's as surprised as everyone else*
<ben_m> this is the sampling from last week by the way
<DaniCook> ah, right
<DaniCook> wasn't that the week before?
<DaniCook> it was midi this week
<ben_m> i meant the practical should have been in last week, but yes it was set 2 weeks ago
<DaniCook> ah right, sorry
<ben_m> Mike, have you tried the sampling practical?
<ben_m> no worries dani :) you were right!
<DaniCook> :)
<DaniCook> mike's gone off to hit his compressor with an axe
<ben_m> that will sort out his hum problems!
<DaniCook> certainly will, lol
<mike_nostradamus> Not really i 'm trying to keep up to word stuff for now i have to fin d a way to transfer the files to something i'm comfortable working with
<ben_m> may have some implications safety wise though...
<DaniCook> yes, health and safety and all that
<ben_m> do you have an audio editor mike?
<DaniCook> i think there are guidlines about it, lol
<mike_nostradamus> yes i have one or two
<ben_m> certainly are! and none of them involve axe induced violence towards dynamic altering hardware
<DaniCook> lol
<ben_m> a 'normal' audio editor should be suitable for the task mike
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<DaniCook> i think there is a sub-section about noise gates though
<ben_m> yes, i believe there is
<DaniCook> it was amended in 1957 because of a bad batch of gates that were smuggled into the coutry by armenians
<ben_m> moving on... how did you 2 find the MIDI questions?
<mike_nostradamus> my editor will do compressing ,de noising ect is that what your talking about
<ben_m> armenians eh! lol
<DaniCook> yeah, the're buggers
<ben_m> mike - the task mostly just involves cutting and the ability to look at the waveform 'close up'
<DaniCook> midi was ok, well most of it
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<ben_m> what did you find a problem dani?
<DaniCook> i ws just a bit unsure about one of my questions
<ben_m> which one?
<DaniCook> note number for middle c, i couldn't remember it
<ben_m> ah right
<ben_m> i think theres more than one standard possibly
<DaniCook> i see
<ben_m> also, middle C is considered to be C3 with most but not all manufacturers!
<DaniCook> lol, good standard
<ben_m> hehe! exactly
<DaniCook> bugger, you want C0 didn't you?
<ben_m> ok, what I was looking for was note number 60 (presuming we use C3 as middle C)
<DaniCook> ok
<DaniCook> i put it as the actual midi information, oops
<mike_nostradamus> do you have to remember things like that?can't you just look them up in your squencer book?
<ben_m> the way this is worked out is that there are 128 note numbers
<ben_m> mike - in general you may not need to know this but for the exam you need to know oddities like this
<mike_nostradamus> wow!!!
<ben_m> so with the 128 notes, the first note (0) is C-2 (not to be confused with C2)
<ben_m> the last note (127) is G8
<DaniCook> start taking "imodium plus" now
<ben_m> hehe
<ben_m> so the locations of the Cs in terms of MIDI note numbers is pretty simple
<DaniCook> just add the 8's up
<audiocourses> You are allowed a calculator in the exam by the way...
<ben_m> 0,(C-2)12(C-1),(C0)24,(C1)36,(C2)48,(C3)60 and so on
<ben_m> 12 times table
* audiocourses nips off back to php madness
<DaniCook> lol, oh yeah
<ben_m> hehe
<DaniCook> i was forgetting the black fellers
<ben_m> so hold off the immodium for a minute...or is it to late (holds nose)
<DaniCook> lol
<ben_m> so dani, in essence your answer was right, but you just put in more information than the question asked for
<ben_m> but thats ok
<DaniCook> cool
<audiocourses> Ben..  (in the background) can you upload a large file say 7meg.. see what happnes.
<audiocourses> in /root
<ben_m> no probs cap'n
<audiocourses> ta
<ben_m> i's on the way
<DaniCook> *mike and dani whistle to themselves*
<audiocourses> fancs
<ben_m> no its not!
<audiocourses> Mike.. how did you find the questions in general this week? for MT and RT?
<ben_m> ok trying again, is going about 21kbps according to firewall
<ben_m> grr, been disconnected again
<ben_m> motherf...
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> after about 20 secs get a 'cannot find server' error and page cant be displayed
<audiocourses> Yeah sees to me the server is simply having a day of it.. and times out with large ones.
<ben_m> trying again
<mike_nostradamus> I found the questions not bad still trying to digest some.need some imodium!!!I'm looking in my yamaha manualm trying to figure out this c2 prog 0 stuff
<audiocourses> No file size restrictions.. and time out in phpo code set to 6000 secs.
<DaniCook> i want to ounch the server
<ben_m> and failed again
<DaniCook> (an ounch is where to punch something so hard, you say ouch)
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> C2 prog mike?
<mike_nostradamus> example in my book it list note 36 note c1 click square wave do I have to remember all of these
<ben_m> chris-it seems to consistently cut out at about 670kbs of the file - just tried several times and it will not reach 700kb
<ben_m> mike - i think that waht you may be reading is pretty product specific
<audiocourses> thanks ben..
<audiocourses> Lets move on.
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<DaniCook> ok
* audiocourses changes topic to 'I need beer'
<DaniCook> i've got one
<audiocourses> hehe thanks.
<audiocourses> Anyway Ben did you listen to the mono mp3 that dani posteD?
<ben_m> no havent chewcked it out yet - where is it?
<ben_m> oh i see it
<audiocourses> k
<audiocourses> Dani want to talk us through this version...
<DaniCook> ok,
<DaniCook> well, i started by doing my other 3 mixes
<DaniCook> and picked the best one from that for mp3, or so i thought
<DaniCook> i then mono'd it, checked for any phase probs
<DaniCook> changed a little eq
<DaniCook> saved it, and mp3'd it usng lame (thanks ben)
<DaniCook> sounds a little bassy on my comp speakers, but sounded ok on normal hi-fi
<DaniCook> oh i normalised it as well
<DaniCook> most of the real work was done on the other 3 mixes forst
<DaniCook> you want me talk thru that?
<audiocourses> yes but just try dcc me that large one again here please.
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> grr
<audiocourses> OK talk us through the master please. (ill need another file send in a mo)
<DaniCook> try one more
<DaniCook> ok,
<DaniCook> do you have msn?
<audiocourses> nope.
<audiocourses> ICQ yes
<DaniCook> i haven't got icq
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> ok, other mix's
<DaniCook> i first looked at levels and noticed that they were low
<audiocourses> yes they were....
<audiocourses> -6dB low
<DaniCook> yup
<DaniCook> so i normalised up to about -3db
<DaniCook> to give me some headroom
<audiocourses> Interesting..
<audiocourses> good though :)
<DaniCook> i then started using a multiband
<audiocourses> (send file now please)
<audiocourses> DCC
<audiocourses> What did you sue for multiband?
<audiocourses> grr
<DaniCook> dynasone, rather than t-racks
<audiocourses> ok
<DaniCook> it's 4 band rather than 3
<DaniCook> it took the levels up nicely
<audiocourses> and what was your aproach to multiband?
<audiocourses> did you set them up separtely..? or use a default?
<DaniCook> and i tweaked the threashold and levels for the different bands
<audiocourses> ahh ok
<DaniCook> used a saved one and changed it
<audiocourses> k
<DaniCook> i also solo'd the different bands as well, so see if i could hear anything naughty
<audiocourses> ahh good idea that
<DaniCook> when i started compressing i noticed a lot of noise appeard at the beggining
<audiocourses> the guitar intro bit?
<audiocourses> yeah I can imagine
<DaniCook> so i put a denoiser at in the forst part of the master chain
<DaniCook> sampled the noise before the track started and froze the level
<DaniCook> it did a pretty good job
<audiocourses> can't wait to hear it.
<audiocourses> Tell me about the bass..
<audiocourses> casue the mix I have here..
<audiocourses> has a ton of stuff under 20Hz.
<DaniCook> yes?
<audiocourses> You are in the majority though lol
<DaniCook> right, well, i was auditioning between two systems and neither are flat
<DaniCook> so i was compromising between comp speakers ans hi-fi
<audiocourses> in fact from 31HZ down to zero there is a contact engery level of around 50dB
<audiocourses> One tip for you here.
<DaniCook> i actually cut a lot of bass with the compressor
<DaniCook> yes?
<audiocourses> get a brick wall filter operating at 20Hz
<audiocourses> remove everything below
<audiocourses> just takes up bandwidth
<DaniCook> all the mud
<audiocourses> not needed
<DaniCook> i have't got a spectrum anylizer
<audiocourses> unless you are an elephant
<ben_m> yeah, a lot of radio mixes will actually be filtered below 40-80Hz
<DaniCook> lol or hippo
<audiocourses> yes any big eared beast
<audiocourses> possibly a mooose
<DaniCook> lol
<ben_m> lol
<mike_nostradamus> or mouse
<audiocourses> that would need to be one huge mouse
<audiocourses> go on mike.
<mike_nostradamus> go on I was just listening I seen a mooose
<audiocourses> lol ok
<DaniCook> the other mixes have a lot less bottom end
<DaniCook> it must a mono 64k thing
<audiocourses> it's not so much the amount of bottom we can hear..
<audiocourses> it's just a tip for getting rid of shit that aint needed....
<DaniCook> right
<audiocourses> Know what I mean?
<DaniCook> to be honest, i'm a bit of a sub man
<audiocourses> make your file sizes smaller don't you rekon ben?
<audiocourses> sub don't go below 20Hz..
<audiocourses> well your ears don;t anyway
<DaniCook> no, but my cheat cavity does, lol
<audiocourses> trousers may flap I guess...
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> chest
<ben_m> its worth cutting out all the subsonic stuff - speakers waste energy on LFs when they could be doing work in other freq bands if you know what i mean
<audiocourses> certainly internet radio mono mixes don't need it... just something to think about
<DaniCook> it's a good point, well made
<ben_m> hehe
<DaniCook> small file though innit
<audiocourses> pretty small..
<DaniCook> i used some stuff that alice gave me
<ben_m> lol
<audiocourses> hehe
<audiocourses> I notice this mono mix removes most things above about 12K
<audiocourses> I'd say you did a good job all in all with this one mike
<DaniCook> wish i had a spectrum :(
<audiocourses> sound forge comes with one
<DaniCook> mike?
<ben_m> i think the lack of HF in this mix id due to the low bit rate of the MP3
<audiocourses> It's a good tool to have you really need one..
<audiocourses> Yes Ben.
<DaniCook> i've got sound forge *dani coughs and shuffles feet*
<audiocourses> I hear some things here that are not so obvious in the original...
<audiocourses> a product of multiband..
<audiocourses> even thoug it's been mp3'd
<DaniCook> i thought i'd lost the toms a bit
<DaniCook> but you wanted it to sound "different"
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> of course.. you did ok, it would be broadcastable
<audiocourses> and not sound thin or weak next to others on the playlist
<DaniCook> thank you, i'm much happier with the nice mixes
<audiocourses> I was about to say I bet you are..
<DaniCook> were's the spectrum in s/forge?
<audiocourses> Im gonna log off an back on to try and solve the mystery of DCC
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> what version of SF?
<DaniCook> it might be my router
<DaniCook> 6
<ben_m> hey u having probl;ems with dcc in mirc
<audiocourses> Under Tools
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> yes ben are u?
<ben_m> no, im using web client but i have found this to sometimes help
<ben_m> go to dcc menu then options
<audiocourses> yup
<ben_m> then folders option on the left - there will be an option called DCC ignore that sometimes turns itself on - it needs to be disabled
<ben_m> dunno if thats the problem
<audiocourses> Hmm  try ow Dani wityh da large one..
<DaniCook> i've turned mine 9off as well,
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> bugger
<DaniCook> :(
<ben_m> no luck
<ben_m> whats the problem
<ben_m> error msg?
<audiocourses> try again dani
* mike_nostradamus has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
<DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> connection failed
