    <DaniCook> 2 1/2
<audiocourses> OK you will love Chis... <audYocourse7> thsee hour..
    <audiocorses>O 15 quetions i total!
    <DaiCook&g; 7
    &l;ben_m&t; easy in comparison! lol
    <resol69> What's the catch?
    <audiocourses> No catch
<audiocourses> And you will recognise many of them
<DaniCook> so i guess they want really FULL answers then, or do i take my gameboy?
<ben_m> i guess you feel relieved and are smiling right now! lol
    <resol69> cool.
    <audiocourses> 5 questions an hours
<DaniCook> well, one side of my face has turned up,
<audiocourses> My advice is write half a page for each
<DaniCook> and the questions could be about anythng we've covered so far?
<aido> Back again-sorry had to feed myself
    <audiocourses> Yes Dani
    <DaniCook> WRITE???? i can't write, i've been in IT for 5 years!
    <audiocourses> Pen and paper.
<DaniCook> *shudder* do they still have them?
<audiocourses> lol, yeah my handwrting is appauling
<DaniCook> it's like the eighteenth century
<resol69> eeek, I have horrible handwriting. 8 years of nuns and Catholic school couldn't fix it!
<aido> Ill be glad to write-the hardest part so far for me is typing-Ive answrered only 35 questions so far this week -Ive written answers to restu
    <DaniCook> oooo, nuns
    <audiocourses> lol
    <audiocourses> Listen
    <DaniCook> sorry, lol
<aido> Nancy -you sure your not Irish
    <ben_m> lol
    <resol69> Very Irish - MCMAHON
<ben_m> famous liverpool player with same surname!
    <aido> Steve
    <ben_m> indeed! sorry chris
    * audiocourses audiocourses rolls his eyes
    <audiocourses> OK guys listen
<audiocourses> this week you got more questions coming
    <audiocourses> RT is synchronisation
<audiocourses> MT is applications of MT
<audiocourses> Then you get two mock exams
    <DaniCook> ok
<audiocourses> Now with these mock exams my advice is this.
    <audiocourses> Print them off
    <DaniCook> ok
    <audiocourses> set aside three hours
    <audiocourses> in the library
    <DaniCook> lol
<audiocourses> somwhere you won't get disturbed
<audiocourses> and assume exam conditions for yourself
    <DaniCook> the toilet
<audiocourses> take paper and two pens (one always stops working)
<audiocourses> and sit for three hours doing the paper.
<audiocourses> Do the other paper the following day
    <audiocourses> Don't cheat.. (what's the point?)
    <DaniCook> righto
    <audiocourses> and attempt them all.
    <DaniCook> you're only cheating yousel...yadda yadda
<audiocourses> even if you trip up.. still send them back as if it were THE exam
<aido> sounds ok-is it 5 questions on each paper
    <audiocourses> 15 questions each paper
    <DaniCook> you want them posting?
<audiocourses> Posting for you and Aido is simple
    <DaniCook> yes
<audiocourses> What you might want to do is type them up (don't change them) and e-mail them to us
    <DaniCook> ok
    <aido> ok
<ben_m> or scan the papers if you have facilities possibly?
<audiocourses> But posting is fine.. I don't mind
    <audiocourses> Good idea ben..
<resol69> I'll scan mine, make sure it legible! :)
    <ben_m> :)
<audiocourses> ONe thing you might want to do, which I suggest regularly is.. set aside 15 mins at the end of the exam for re-writting a neat copy.
<audiocourses> Up to you how you work.
<resol69> we can do that on the real test?
<audiocourses> But as Nancy mentioned, you gotta get it neat
<DaniCook> are given blank paper to write on?
<ben_m> yes, and also obviously all the other exam tricks - i.e. answer the questions with the highest points weightings first
<audiocourses> Yes you can nancy..  plan to finish with 15 mins spare
<aido> Its a good idea to take up to twenty minutes at start to read questions and sketch out answersh
<ben_m> work out timings for each question based on the marking weight
    <DaniCook> pardon?
    <ben_m> as such
    <audiocourses> yes Aido good point..
<DaniCook> ah, each question is worth different marks?
<ben_m> ah, no, i may be confused here with another exam
    <ben_m> Frown
    <audiocourses> yes
<audiocourses> You'll find them slightly different weightings
<DaniCook> back in your basket then, bad dog
    <ben_m> Smiley
    <audiocourses> but almost the same
<audiocourses> most are like 6 or 7 marks
<aido> what percentage is a pass or honour
<ben_m> questions that you know are worth answering first though I feel
    <DaniCook> i see
<audiocourses> The pass rate is a moving threshold depending on global figures
    <audiocourses> but around %40
<aido> I agree Ben-but trick is not to overdo what you know well
<audiocourses> To give you an exmaple of a model question and answer read this:
    <audiocourses> 10. Multitrack Tape Recording
<audiocourses> What is a spin in?                           (7 marks)
    <audiocourses> Answer 10.
<audiocourses> If, for example, a singer had performed one chorus of a song well and the rest badly, it would be convenient to copy the good version and use it to replace the bad ones. Before the invention of the sampler, this was done by copying the section onto another tape recorder, then playing back this tape at the appropriate time and re-recording it in the desired places.  Since this technique depends on a lot of trial and error, it is now more convenient  to record the spin in section into a sampler where it can be replayed instantly at the press of a button.
<ben_m> yeah, hence a rough idea of timings for each question
<audiocourses> That would give you maximum marks for that question.
<DaniCook> was the question "how would you use spinning in"?
<audiocourses> The questions whas "What is a spin in?
<audiocourses> So you can see the type of detail they are looking for..
<aido> What is a moving threshold-is it based on numbers taking exam-
<audiocourses> I think you are all on track, don't you?
<DaniCook> right, so yu give real world examples to expand you answer, rather than " a method of blending two sepereate tapes together"
<audiocourses> say globally the answer papers were not very well answered (possibly badly set questions etc) then the pass rate will be lowered.
    <audiocourses> understand?
    <DaniCook> that's fair
<audiocourses> all exam boards work that way generally.
<DaniCook> it's a good job driving tests aren't done on the same scheme
    <ben_m> hehe
    <audiocourses> lol
<aido> Ah-so to aim for 60/70% would be right way to go
    <DaniCook> :-)
    <audiocourses> NO Aido
    <audiocourses> Aim for 100% :))
    <DaniCook> ;)
    <audiocourses> generally the banding is 40 - 54 Pass, 55 - 69 Merit, 70 and above distiction.
<aido> I thought you would say that-Im only thinking of everyone else
    <audiocourses> distinction... lol not distiction..lol
    <audiocourses> Everyone clear so far?
    <aido> yes
    <resol69> yup
    <audiocourses> want another model answer?
    <resol69> sure
    <DaniCook> yes
<audiocourses> What is VCA Grouping?                         (6 marks)
    <audiocourses> Answer 14.
<audiocourses> A mixing console might have several VCA master faders.  Each channel fader incorporates a VCA, which can be assigned to a VCA master fader. If several channels are assigned to a VCA master, then that VCA master will have overall control over the level of them all, without having to mix the signals as in conventional grouping.
    <ben_m> brb
    <audiocourses> k
    <DaniCook> ok
<aido> no need to explain whats a VCA in answer?
    <audiocourses> I would
<aido> I take it anything specific should be explained as well as answering question specifics
    <ben_m> back
    <DaniCook> wb
<audiocourses> This one of Nancy's answers:
<audiocourses> 39. What is VCA Grouping?
<audiocourses> On a console with VCA grouping, all the channel faders have a small switch that can select one of (usually) eight VCA masters. When a VCA master is selected, that controls the overall level of all channels set to that group. So, the level of the those faders is controlled by one fader. With conventional subgrouping, the audio is mixed through the group fader(s). With VCA grouping, the VCA fader simply sends out a control voltage to the channel faders.
<audiocourses> so you can see, I have no fears for you.
    <audiocourses> I prefer nancy's personally.
    <resol69> I'm so cool. :)
    <ben_m> hehe
    <audiocourses> lol
    <DaniCook> :-)
    <audiocourses> One more?
    <resol69> yup
<audiocourses> What is the meaning of the term edit density?  What significance does it have?
    <audiocourses> (7 marks)
    <audiocourses> Answer 11.
<audiocourses> Edit density refers to the frequency of edits and the shortness of duration of the segments.  The more short segments there are, and the closer they are edited, the higher the edit density.
<audiocourses> When a recording is edited to a high edit density, it becomes more difficult for the hard disk to retrieve the data fast enough, hence it is not possible to play as many tracks in a session with a high edit density as it is in a session with a low edit density.
    <DaniCook> ok
    <audiocourses> This is Dani's answer:
<audiocourses> Edit density - the more the audio is edited and scattered, then the more the hard disk drive has to search for each segment. The harder it has to work, the slower it will retrieve the audio.
    <audiocourses> It's on the money.
    <resol69> You go Dani!
    <DaniCook> thanks
<audiocourses> You would get full marks for that Im sure.
    <DaniCook> that's comforting
    <audiocourses> Good
    <audiocourses> Like I said it's all good.
    <ben_m> i'm confident you'll do well
    <audiocourses> Consider yourself red penned.
    * audiocourses pops red pen back in pocket
<aido> When an audio file is recorded it is recorded in long continuos sections on the disk.when material is edited the regions are broken up and not continuous causing the heads to move more often to retrieve data.Edit density refers to number of regions and length, their proximity to each other and how far they are physically seperated on disk.Greater the density fewer tracks will play.rnand etw
    <DaniCook> hehe, thanks
    <audiocourses> Way to go AIDO!
<audiocourses> You might pip Dani at the post with that one!
    <DaniCook> nice answer
<aido> I had it written out but due to time hadnt managed to send yet.
<audiocourses> So hopefully we have seen why we learn the tough way?
    <audiocourses> Cause it works :)
    <aido> Agreed-youre guaranteed to remember
    <audiocourses> exactly Aido
    <DaniCook> very true
<audiocourses> courses that present you with the answers are , in my opinion, of limited value.
    <ben_m> i agree totally
<audiocourses> Shall we rip dani's audio to bits now?
    <audiocourses> lol
    <DaniCook> lol
<aido> Ill admit I got most of that answer at wwwo
<DaniCook> it's about that time of day
<audiocourses> doesn't matter where you get the info Aido, point is you had to find it.
<resol69> Yea, it's helpful that guy is teaching the same class!
<aido> yeah-but he hasnt got enough course notes
    <audiocourses> anyway lets move on
    * audiocourses changes topic to 'Practical Discussion'
<audiocourses> OK any luck with uploading nancy?
<resol69> no. I'll have to go somewhere else and do it.
    <audiocourses> Oh ok got ya.
    <audiocourses> Ben..
<audiocourses> how about the MT practicals?
<audiocourses> I see ben is downloading..
    <ben_m> is this the sampling?
    <ben_m> yeah, isdn grrrr
<audiocourses> I just wondered if you had any more submissions.
    <ben_m> not that i've seen :(
<audiocourses> Those three in dani folder are the mastering asignment
<audiocourses> Dani can you run us through them..?
<DaniCook> err, i'll try, it was a while ago
<DaniCook> i think i boosted the db by normalising, then denoised, then multibanded,
<DaniCook> the three difeerent mixes are different ratio and threashold setting, to try and get a broad scope
<audiocourses> which is your final version? or your preferred?
    <DaniCook> i think number 2
    <DaniCook> no, number 1
<audiocourses> has anyone else downloaded them?
    <audiocourses> nancy? aido?
    <DaniCook> or is it 3
    <DaniCook> lol
    <audiocourses> lol
    <aido> no
<resol69> I listened at work at while ago.
    <audiocourses> three is significantly louder.
<ben_m> lol - i hope its not 2 cause that one just timed out on me!
    <audiocourses> ISND sucks..
    <audiocourses> ISDN
<DaniCook> yes, that's my kick ass one,
<ben_m> tell me about it... i want my adsl :)
<audiocourses> It's my server you are pulling it off.. so it should fly on adsl
    <audiocourses> I like three dani
<DaniCook> yeah, just listening to them again, i like 3 best too
    <audiocourses> Very nice
    <DaniCook> thank you
    <audiocourses> clean
<DaniCook> the other tow are a little more conservative
    <DaniCook> two
    <audiocourses> Yes I thought that..
<audiocourses> I'm toggling between the original and your "kick ass" one..
    <audiocourses> I prefer yours.
    <audiocourses> :)
<DaniCook> i didn't know who their target audience would be, so i did the first two for them and the last one for me
    <audiocourses> lol
    <DaniCook> thank you, that's a nice compliment
<audiocourses> It's tasteful actually.. and far from extreme
<DaniCook> felt it brought the guitars out nicely
<audiocourses> yeah the end is great... the toms are lifted too
    <DaniCook> :-)
    <DaniCook> where's the but? lol
    <audiocourses> Looking for one
    * aido has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
    <DaniCook> lol
    * Guest17222 has joined #audiocourses
    * Guest17222 is now known as aido
<ben_m> just heard the 1st one
    * aido has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
    <ben_m> very natural/transparent mastering
<audiocourses> The mid is working quite well, hence the guitars you like..
<DaniCook> i raised the threashold slightly
    <audiocourses> Yeah Im impressed
    <DaniCook> thanks guys
<audiocourses> stick it out there lol
    <DaniCook> lol
<DaniCook> i'm not sticking it anyway, lol
    <audiocourses> lol
    <DaniCook> ;-)
<audiocourses> you got it ben, number three?
<ben_m> still on the way - almost there
    <audiocourses> k
<audiocourses> So how's the gigs nancy?
<resol69> good, I worked last nigth. Some great bands. It's challenging when there's a big band, the room is small and it can't be too loud going over the web.
<audiocourses> is there some kind of limiter before it hits the web?
<resol69> Yes, I and it gets switched to mono.
    <audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> you have to actually limit manually?
    * Guest98396 has joined #audiocourses
<resol69> I send a stereo signal to the web folks in the back room and they take it from there.
    * Guest98396 is now known as aido
<audiocourses> got ya, welcome back aido
    <aido> sorry lost connection
<audiocourses> do they guitars ever get heard over the web?
<resol69> sure. I mix pretty well if I do say so myself.
    <audiocourses> cool..
    <DaniCook> nice one
<audiocourses> I was just thinking about small rooms..
<audiocourses> when the back line is loud
<audiocourses> live recordings can be very vocal heavy, and plenty of DI instruments in the mix.
    <audiocourses> you know?
<resol69> Yes, especially when the singers keep wanting you to turn them up!
    <audiocourses> exactly..
    <audiocourses> Electric guitars often suffer
    <audiocourses> Hey Aido
<audiocourses> Have you managed to have a crack at any of the practical stuff?
<aido> no-Im unsure how to download anything-Im not the most computer literate-just use basics in work
<audiocourses> They are not complusory anyway, just if you want the feedback.
<audiocourses> If you need help in downloading though we can help you.
<aido> Ok-ben suggested some downloads lkast-to be honest Ive not had a great deal of time this week and had only finished answers yesterday
    <audiocourses> Fair enough.
<ben_m> just listened to 3rd version - fat!
<ben_m> with an 'f' of course
    <DaniCook> would have preffered phat
    <ben_m> hehe
<ben_m> thats a big sound there
    <DaniCook> hehe
    <ben_m> very FM radio
    <audiocourses> Certainly.
<ben_m> still quite transparent mind, not much pumping or other artefacts
    <ben_m> very good
<DaniCook> i was very wary of pumping
<audiocourses> bet you wanna hear it aido?
    <audiocourses> :)
    <DaniCook> nice slow release
<audiocourses> ahhh yeah the old slow release gag..
    <ben_m> boom boom
    <DaniCook> lol, well, i couldn't help it,
    <ben_m> lol
<aido> the oldies are the best
