<audiocourses> brb mike just gonna fix myself some coffee
<mike_nostradamus> Not bad I was catching up on some chores around the house its nice outside
<mike_nostradamus> brb i'm getting water
* DaniCook has joined #AudioCourses
<mike_nostradamus> heyhey danny
<DaniCook> hiya mike
<mike_nostradamus> did ya try yesterday?
<DaniCook> yes i did,
<audiocourses> Back
<DaniCook> is it on for tonight?
<audiocourses> Hi Dani
<audiocourses> Yes it's on.
<DaniCook> ah, what time, i'm still at work and have "sneaked" on, lol
<DaniCook> hi chris
<audiocourses> hi.
<audiocourses> now.
<audiocourses> :)
<DaniCook> lol, ok, gotta keep two fingers on alt/tab then, lol
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Ben is coming aidan said he will make some of it, nancy can't
<DaniCook> ok
* Guest47436 has joined #AudioCourses
* Guest47436 is now known as ben_m
<audiocourses> HI ben
<ben_m> hi everyone
<mike_nostradamus> my computer at work has a fire wall and wont allow chat do you beleive that
<mike_nostradamus> hi ben
<audiocourses> That's typical for an institution Mike
<mike_nostradamus> yes I know they clamped down big time on us because of porn
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> hehe
<audiocourses> 2 many beavers no doubt?
<ben_m> lol
<mike_nostradamus> Can you imagine miners a mile down thinking about that kind of stuff
* audiocourses changes topic to 'Beavers'
<audiocourses> Miners thinking about beavers?
<mike_nostradamus> no really we have ladies in the work force and times have really changed here
<audiocourses> The mind wonders...
<audiocourses> Don't the ladies like beavers Mike?
<mike_nostradamus> the only thing miners are are eager beavers
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Nothing finer than an eager beaver
<mike_nostradamus> thats right
<audiocourses> I think this cohort of Audio Courses students will probably go down in history as the "Beavers"
<ben_m> indeed
<mike_nostradamus> with robots and the equipment we have its like watching a science fiction like star treck
<audiocourses> Maybe even the "Eager Beavers"
<ben_m> Class of 2003 - The Eager Beavers
<mike_nostradamus> not that eager
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> I had beaver fever which is a real sickness
<ben_m> beaver fever?
<mike_nostradamus> never drink the water around beaver dwellings
<ben_m> really? is it polluted?
<mike_nostradamus> yes they do their waste jobs where they live
<audiocourses> Dirty buggers...
<mike_nostradamus> It does afect humans
<mike_nostradamus> I thought I seen nancy logged on
<audiocourses> Nancy might be able to log into site, but I don;t think she can get passed the firewall for chat
<audiocourses> she is in the office
<mike_nostradamus> she might of been from work but also could have a fire wall
<mike_nostradamus> right
<mike_nostradamus> I tried yesterday the buggers
<audiocourses> Firewalls are good when you are in control of them.. otherwsie can be frustrating.
<DaniCook> sorry, got called away on a DNS server problem
<audiocourses> no worries dani
<audiocourses> did you guys get your exam candidate number info?
<DaniCook> yes thank you, on another note, my director has told me i can do my mocks here, if i find the time
<mike_nostradamus> so ben you explained that vca prob good now I understand
<audiocourses> Good dani
<mike_nostradamus> my boss let me come home yesterday for the live workshop
<audiocourses> Those mocks should be done within next couple days guys
<ben_m> glad you got it mike
<mike_nostradamus> yes i got one almost done
<audiocourses> lol almost done mike?
<audiocourses> ru out of time?
<mike_nostradamus> no some of the terminology I have to convert to french because that is how my brain works
<ben_m> le compressore?
<mike_nostradamus> I 'm from a french background
<mike_nostradamus> oui,oui moi je suis francais aussi
<audiocourses> I understand Mike, technical language in a non-mother tongue is very difficult
<mike_nostradamus> the only universal language is love
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> and "Beavers"
<mike_nostradamus> lol
<ben_m> j'mange cochon d'indes
<DaniCook> the only universal language is MIDI
<ben_m> excuse my french
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> I'm very lucky I have an english educated Ukrainian wife
<DaniCook> :-)
<audiocourses> Good point Dani
<audiocourses> That's an interesting cultural mix Mike..
<mike_nostradamus> right on that one dani
<mike_nostradamus> were what you call a real heinz 57 mix over here
<audiocourses> Nothing wrong with that
<DaniCook> i think it's good for a country, a bit of ethnic diversity
<audiocourses> We use that expression in Uk also
<mike_nostradamus> no It dont take long to pick up the language
<DaniCook> gives people the chance to beat up on rednecks
<mike_nostradamus> see whats a redneck?
* audiocourses clears his throat
<DaniCook> someone with a big fat red neck, usually highly racist/highly stupid/lowly sexed
<DaniCook> lol
<mike_nostradamus> a farmer that has a tan
<DaniCook> america invented them
<mike_nostradamus> lollol
<audiocourses> and judged by others as being big fat red neck, usually highly racist/highly stupid/lowly sexed
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> lol
<mike_nostradamus> we have no red necks here because we take off our shirts when we tan including the females
<ben_m> excellent
<DaniCook> ooooooo,
<mike_nostradamus> thats law here
<audiocourses> yuck.. i hate that..
<audiocourses> lol (joke)
<mike_nostradamus> just came in last year men are allowed to bare arms and women are allowed to bare breasts
<DaniCook> anywhere?>
<mike_nostradamus> anywhere like a beach
<audiocourses> Anywhere like the shopping store?
<DaniCook> don't the american have the right to bear arms? isn't it in the constitution?
<mike_nostradamus> not at the mall but you could do it if you wanted
<ben_m> sounds lile a fair swap
<mike_nostradamus> I dont know !!
<audiocourses> lol you could take your breasts out in the store? Hmm might think about moving there.. setting up a breasts in store movement
<DaniCook> it could work chris, free the puppies campaign
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Good job Nancy is not with us tonight, though she will read :)) What's your thoughts Nancy?
<mike_nostradamus> you can in the pubs ,university students have shows at theirs never seen one yet but heard of them
<DaniCook> i'd like to out it on record that i neither expressed an interest in breasts, have never even seen breasts and in fact am so innocent on all the breasts talk that i can't even spell it, thank you nancy
<ben_m> i'm with you dani ;)
<DaniCook> :-) lol
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> I dont say it in a way to disgrace women thats how free we are .now we have the maruwana laws being very laxed
<DaniCook> deffo moving there then,
<audiocourses> lol
<DaniCook> build me one, i'm flying in
<mike_nostradamus> whithin the year we will be able to smoke it in our houses legally
<ben_m> what about in dept stores?
<DaniCook> well, if enough of you smoke it and blow your smoke over here, england will be very happy too
<DaniCook> we smoke it in our houses anyway, we just don't hang oput of the window while the police drive by
<mike_nostradamus> if your caught with over so many ounces you pay a fine it depends our drugs are regulated here
<DaniCook> we will smoke it on the beaches, we will smoke it in the streets.......england will allways be hungry (got to do a churchill voice)
<ben_m> lol
<mike_nostradamus> I dont know how we changed from one subject to this one because i dont smoke or drink
<DaniCook> but you like breasts
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> lol I have to answer yes I like women but also respect them.
<DaniCook> the drugs are regulated in my house too,
<mike_nostradamus> lol
<DaniCook> only an ounce a week
<mike_nostradamus> I must admit I did try moonshine
<DaniCook> that can turn you blind
<DaniCook> along with breasts
<mike_nostradamus> the car did work pretty good
<DaniCook> ROFL!
<audiocourses> So mike.. how yu fnding the study?
* audiocourses changes topic to 'Revision'
<mike_nostradamus> I find it slow to catch on to certain items but I'm greatful that nancy ,danny and aidan have some good answers
<DaniCook> thanks mike
<audiocourses> Yes I've been impresssed with the study guides
<audiocourses> This team study is an excellent tool.
<mike_nostradamus> I dont know if all the rest know but I lost my best friend and my father about a month ago so that what is setting me back
<DaniCook> oh shit, i'm sorry to hear that mike
<mike_nostradamus> I had to take time off work and do some studying recently
<audiocourses> It's great you are all pulling together now.
<mike_nostradamus> danny thats ok shit happens but I'm still 100 percent to try and get this at my age
<mike_nostradamus> oh yes thats why some of the answers haven't been there for you all
<DaniCook> good for you mike, i lost my mum a few years back, (7 years ago last week) and it knocked me on my back for about 2 years
<DaniCook> i couldn't even fuction
<DaniCook> hey, we should all post pics of ourselves, so we know what everyone loks like
<mike_nostradamus> Well with me my dad went real fast no suffering in away thats good i didn't have to suffer much.my dad did live with us for the last 6 yrs that was hard
<DaniCook> it's a blessing when it's quick, but when it's slow, you get a bit of time to prepare i would imagine
<audiocourses> Dani, you have actually suggested something I intended to put to you all. I wan't to profile you all on the site.. cohort 2003, with a pic
<mike_nostradamus> yes pictures where do we upload to and how big of a file
<audiocourses> anysize ya like to the normal place.. just call the file name after your name
<DaniCook> and do you want to see our breats? (i'm asking for nancy's sake)
<audiocourses> Il do the rest
<DaniCook> lol
<mike_nostradamus> lol
<audiocourses> no breasts thanks... but nancy pop a couple specials ones in the post for me..
<DaniCook> lol!
<audiocourses> JOKE
<audiocourses> sorry NANCY..
<DaniCook> she's going to kill me, she's going to kill me
<audiocourses> Good
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> danny are your ears burning yet
<DaniCook> lol
<audiocourses> It's amzing how soon an audio engineers brain lowers the tone of dialogue
<audiocourses> This happens in the studio all the time..
<mike_nostradamus> chrish do you want pictures of studio or just our faces
<audiocourses> Faces in front of your precious gear would be good.. send a few mike
<mike_nostradamus> how big of A FILE AND WHAT KIND
<audiocourses> don't mind how big it is.. 200k? jpg is best
<DaniCook> no prob
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<audiocourses> :)
<audiocourses> Include any other details you would like me to add about you.
<audiocourses> background etc.
<mike_nostradamus> I dont know if I have any room to fit my camera in my studio anymore
<DaniCook> how big is your camera mike?
<audiocourses> hehe
<mike_nostradamus> like spent a few years with jonny casn at san quentin
<mike_nostradamus> cash
<DaniCook> lol
<ben_m> hehe
<audiocourses> What areas are you nost uncomfortable with guys? for the exams? Shall we cover anything now?
<DaniCook> anything with sums
<mike_nostradamus> Chrish i read email on wirting exams are we alowwed to listen to music with those new mini mp3 players(lol
<audiocourses> Dani, no sums in the exam
<audiocourses> Mike, nope,.
<audiocourses> Good plan though dude
<DaniCook> really? not even delay times?
<mike_nostradamus> ah poops
<audiocourses> I doubt it very much Dani.
<audiocourses> if you do it would be one easy one.
<DaniCook> ok,
<audiocourses> I spoke with the chief examiner today about you lot.
<DaniCook> how about french avant garde studios that record real world sounds and mix them into concrete? lol
<audiocourses> I told him I have high expectations..
<mike_nostradamus> I have one thats on the exam can we discuss it
<audiocourses> (no pressurre)
<audiocourses> Yes Mike.
<mike_nostradamus> the jaimaican club mix ithink it was a delay in the music.are you feeding the signal back to the input for increased distotion to get the sound
<mike_nostradamus> it might be an echoe
<audiocourses> A producer wants you to use a tape delay to produce a Jamaican dub style repeat echo. What should you do?
<mike_nostradamus> can you copy the track
<audiocourses> have you ever come across a tape echo box Mike?
<mike_nostradamus> no
<audiocourses> OK then this is what you do.
<DaniCook> i've got to go now guys, i may get on again after i get home,
<mike_nostradamus> what
<DaniCook> if not, speak to you all next week
<audiocourses> Connect an auxiliary send to the input of a reel-to-reel tape recorder. Return the signal from the playback head to another channel. The same auxiliary send from this channel will control the level of the repeats.
<mike_nostradamus> bye dan
<ben_m> cheers dani
<audiocourses> see ya dani
<mike_nostradamus> so what your telling me is that I have to use a reel to reel
<audiocourses> yes, if you don;t have an echo box like a "Copycat"
<mike_nostradamus> would a three head cassette work
<audiocourses> yes
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<audiocourses> do you understand the signal path I described?
<DaniCook> night all
* DaniCook has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
<mike_nostradamus> yes i understand it now like my sony reeel to reel has taht feature but built in
<mike_nostradamus> that
<audiocourses> yes the concept is that the playback head is ata different point in time therefore a delay will exist
<audiocourses> Alla Jaimaican style
<mike_nostradamus> ok I thought all you had to work with was a mixing desk and your recorder thats why i came out with copying second track and delaying there
<audiocourses> that is what a delay is so good thinking, but this is the traditional way for that style..
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<audiocourses> any others mike? you got me an bed at your disposal.
<audiocourses> oops me and Ben..
<audiocourses> sorryben
<ben_m> hehe
<mike_nostradamus> what you falling a sleep
<ben_m> thats ok
<mike_nostradamus> on compression
<mike_nostradamus> Is vocals/drums what you would want to compress
<audiocourses> Ben..?? wanna go with this please?
<ben_m> sure thing
<mike_nostradamus> if you compress why use a gate at the same time
<ben_m> ok mike - there is a good reason why you need to gate when compressing
<ben_m> think about compression logically - it evens out the dynamic range
<mike_nostradamus> yes
<ben_m> so in effect you are reducing the loudest parts and the quieter parts are 'louder'
<ben_m> so, if your quietest parts are maybe undesirable (i.e. hum, noise, other instruments spilling) then they will be made more prominent
<ben_m> which is not ideal if you're trying to only affect one instrument
<ben_m> for instance - with vocals the mic may pick up some of the headphone spill
<ben_m> you dont want that to be heard at all,. let alone brought up to a louder level through compression
<ben_m> so you'd want to gate the signal to remove any unwanted artefacts
<ben_m> Beautiful by Aguilera has VERY noticeable headphone spill during quiet passages that has been eccentuated by compression
<ben_m> is that any clearer re: gates
<ben_m> remember gating needs to be done before compression to be effective
<mike_nostradamus> so im hearing right compression brings all the loud parts down and low parts up in volume and gating will only afect the low end making it quieter
<ben_m> kind of, compression brings down the loudest parts which makes the DIFFERENCE between the loudest parts and quietest parts smaller
<ben_m> therefore the quieter parts appear louder
<ben_m> the gate has a threshold which allows you to cut out all noise below this threshold
<mike_nostradamus> I have a compressor limiter gate 2chanel thats what i would use in the final mix right?
<ben_m> you wouldnt want to gate a final mix
<ben_m> your unit is probably primarily aimed at tracking rather than mastering/post-production
<mike_nostradamus> ok where would one use this component
<mike_nostradamus> or what should i get for my studio?
<ben_m> usually during mixdown with the unit chained into a channel insert on the desk - it also has live uses and could also be used actually whilst recording if you felt confident enough with your settings
<ben_m> big studios would typically have 8-10 of these units so you could use one on each drum and instrument etc
<mike_nostradamus> that many.wow I just bought one 4 channel for the school for vocals and thats it
<mike_nostradamus> do some boards come with on board compresion for each chan
<ben_m> digital desks offer such things
<ben_m> some analogue desks may have a valve section that can be patched into work on any channel but certainly low to mid end desks wouldnt offer such a facility
<audiocourses> also you would find them on older style analogue desks mike
<audiocourses> with a limiter built in
<ben_m> bak to da old skool!
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> when you say limiter is that comp or gate? both?
<audiocourses> back to you Ben.
<ben_m> ok mike
<ben_m> a limiter is a seperate device really
<ben_m> although you could imagine a limiter as a compressor with the ratio sent to infinite
<ben_m> so with a limiter you set an output level and the signal is not allowed to go past this level
<ben_m> practical usage of this would be when recording to a digital medium which doesn't like the signal getting to 0db
<ben_m> so a limiter could be used to prevent clipping
<ben_m> also in live concerts, limiters could be used over the master inserts to prevent any loud transients from blowing speakers (such as vocalists dropping a mic)
<ben_m> is that clear?
<mike_nostradamus> I was just looking over my compressor as your explaining
<mike_nostradamus> I can see all kind of knobs theshold ratio/attack/release gate release/
<mike_nostradamus> but nothing on limiter
<ben_m> what knobs has the limiter section got?
<audiocourses> look for infinity sign mike.
<ben_m> it may be the case that the limiter on your box is basically the compressor set to infinite
<mike_nostradamus> gate theshold/gate release?
<mike_nostradamus> i found sign
<mike_nostradamus> it has 5 knobs
<mike_nostradamus> threshold/ratio with infin.sign/attack/release/output gain/active push button
<mike_nostradamus> ratio with infn sign i never go over 3:1
<audiocourses> That was good stuff..
<audiocourses> did you get it all mike?
<mike_nostradamus> yep what happened to ben fell asleep
<audiocourses> not sure lol
<ben_m> hehe still awake
<ben_m> all that compression talk wore me out
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<ben_m> did you find the limiting function on the compression know
<audiocourses> you get the infinity thing?
<audiocourses> infinite gating... infinate compressing.. max and max
<mike_nostradamus> I neeed to read more about compression and the more i read the more i understand it
<mike_nostradamus> and use it more
<audiocourses> using a digital audio editor (where you can see the waveform) will help see you what it actually does
<mike_nostradamus> I have songs i've recorded as demos which i've never usesd compression
<mike_nostradamus> I'll try that on the editor
<audiocourses> yes look at a simply waveform the compress and view it after the compressing.
<audiocourses> you might need the visuals to get it mike
<mike_nostradamus> I should download a couple and I'm sure i'll have to compress
<mike_nostradamus> visuals right
<mike_nostradamus> Ok its almost that time
<mike_nostradamus> you guys must be tired two days of this
<audiocourses> nah it;s fine Mike.
<audiocourses> no problem :))
<audiocourses> it's our job
<mike_nostradamus> you guys gone to get another beer
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> beeeeer
<audiocourses> beeeeeer
<mike_nostradamus> lol
<audiocourses> beaverrrrrr
<audiocourses> beeeerrrr
<mike_nostradamus> almost sounds the same
<audiocourses> yup
<audiocourses> :)
<audiocourses> both mae you happy
<audiocourses> both make you happy..
<audiocourses> ok shall we wrap this one up then guys?
<audiocourses> and go for next sunday..
<mike_nostradamus> Ok i'm going to work on the exam and you should get one tommorow and another in a few days ok
<audiocourses> that's great mike
<audiocourses> looking forwrad to it
<mike_nostradamus> i'LL try and make it for next sunday I'm with the beavers next wk end
<audiocourses> ok man.. do try to.. exam is soo close..
<mike_nostradamus> yes
<audiocourses> have fun Mike, thanks for coming
<mike_nostradamus> ok bye ben and chrish
