whispey sound???  Reply with quote

i use a sm57 to mic the guitar cabinets. they have cloth grills on them. i tend to stick the mic as close as i can to the speaker. i listen to the recordings and they sound very whispey, as if air was blowing into it. its not a good quailty sound. i havent had a chance to record and try different things for a couple days, but , is the air thats being pushed from the cone blowing directly into the mic giving is that whispey sound, or is there another problem. i ran the sm57 to the mixer to the pa, to the comp and i have a echo mia card. is there anything i can do to get a professional sound without spending over 200 on a rack space or card?

I don't think this is air, how does the guitar cabinet sound without the mics?

Is it the same sound with both mics?

Have you ensured your mic cables are correctly wired?

both of the cabs sound great. i somtimes use a beta 57 and an sm 57 other times to notice a difference. they both sound horrible on the recording. its as if they have no emphasis to them, they sound like a 5 dollar mic. i dont know whether its the air coming from the cone, blowing into it, or, my card in my comp is too old, or not good. i have no idea. i put the mics through a mixer, out to the pa for power, then into the comp. i have an echo mia card. i always record stereo, at 44.1 and 16 or 32 bits sometimes. i just cant figure why im getting the whispey distortion sound.

Yeah sounds odd this one, have you tried recording anything else? With the mics and the same configuration?

Like all audio, you need to fathom out what is the problem in the "chain", the mic? The cables? The soundcard? The audio program?

You need to troubleshoot by eliminating components.. or replacing...

The Sm 57 is a very popupar mic and used all over.It has a built in circuit to up the mids a bit.try backing off on your amp about 6" directly on the cone and experiment working your way off the cone it should work.

as for the delay are you recording with ASIO or WDM.?I know ASIO tends to have a delay when recording but comes out with none on playback.Your recording program should have settings to record WDM and playback in ASIO.

Hi!

I just have to ask what exactly you mean by saying you put it out to the pa for power. From where do you take the signal to your soundcard? Hope you can fix the problem with the distortion. Keep trying, and do really eliminate/change the components in the chain to see where it goes wrong.

could be your preamp(s)..
i tend to use a 57 and a beyer m201 .. both very close together slightly off centre (usually toward the upper left end edge of the speaker cone. touching the cloth).
is it a distorted/heavy guitar? u'll prob want to add a bit more bottom end and crank the amp up nice and loud

well i dont use a preamp. the config is... mixer out to the pa, out to the aurel exciter (type 3), out to the, sound card and back from the sound card to the pa through speakers. it could be the amount of cable i have? each cable is 15 feet long and most of them are monster cables.
i tried more recording and expierements and added a bass guitar into the mix, it sounds better , but the guitars arent sounding the way i want them to. do you recomend a tube preamp? if so, which one can i get for the cheapest to get a mid way to pro sounding recording?
