acousticalweaponsdivision: no rain here today
jaminuk: back
skip_491: wb jam
jaminuk: weathers pretty poor here - monsoon conditions earlier
Chemira-paul has joined the conference.

mrbisto: lol monsoon ben?
chemirastudio: hello my apologies
skip_491: hi chem
skip_491: late again ? eh ? lol jk
chemirastudio: hello all caght me brewing

skip_491: <<<puts mug in freezer
chemirastudio: drooling
chemirastudio: I'm running out of my 4 batches
skip_491: all by urself?
chemirastudio: Merlot, Shiraz, Gertweister bla bla and Savignot blanc
chemirastudio: yes
chemirastudio: Pretty easy
chemirastudio: The gertXX however you spell it is or was fantastic
chemirastudio: 4 bottles left
skip_491: make bigger bacthes
chemirastudio: yepper got that right
chemirastudio: I'm trying beer now
chemirastudio: I mean making beer now
chemirastudio: bever type and drink
skip_491: ya yaaaaa
chemirastudio: I mean never
jaminuk: haha
chemirastudio: not bever
jaminuk: been supping on grandpas old cough medicine?
chemirastudio: Ah caught me It's just a sample
jaminuk: <hic>
chemirastudio: made in Nova Scotia
chemirastudio: So I have to drink it on Sunday part of the taxes
skip_491: home brew is the best brew
skip_491: rlof @ taxes
chemirastudio: tough stuff, sad place. Even the basd stuff tastes good after a while
chemirastudio: BAD
chemirastudio: man, no spell check??
skip_491: anything after 3 or 4 is all good lol
chemirastudio: In the AM or PM
skip_491: both
chemirastudio: kool I'm in
skip_491: <<<laffin
chemirastudio: Any one else homebrew?
jaminuk:
chemirastudio: wow
chemirastudio: what was that?
acousticalweaponsdivision: used to years ago
chemirastudio: Beer or wine
mixindown: too p***** on the shop stuff to do that man!
skip_491: lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: dont drink alcohol anymore so there is little point
mrbisto: not much point every field is a vineyard close to me..
Bruning-Brent has joined the conference.

chemirastudio: name? of wine or grape
chemirastudio: hello x
x016178: Hi all
jaminuk: hi
mixindown: hey x
acousticalweaponsdivision: hello
skip_491: hi x
mrbisto: Northern Italy.. they have them all I think..
mrbisto: HI brent
chemirastudio: Time for a wine cellar
mrbisto: we have some things ot cover for C&G in this workshop..
chemirastudio: zipped
mrbisto: 1. Exam technique
2. Candidate numbers
3. Things to take
4. Timing
5. Example questions (quizz round)
mrbisto: First off for those C&G ers in here, is there anyone without their candidate number?
mrbisto: If so you should contcat me immediately...
acousticalweaponsdivision: got sent mine last week
chemirastudio: the slip??
mrbisto: This candidate number is essential and is your key..
mrbisto: You are to take the slip of paper (with your number on it)
mrbisto: to the exams..
mrbisto: and you wil have to complete the number on your exam paper.
mrbisto: Is that clear? - do not forget it, VERY important.
chemirastudio: check that
mpfcoh OHara has joined the conference.

mpfcoh: evenin all
mixindown: k
mrbisto: NOw the first on the list I wish to return to in a bit..
jaminuk: hi
mrbisto: But things to take with you and we say this each cohort are PLENTY of writing equipment.
skip_491: hi mp
mrbisto: what else might be useful to take? anyone>
mrbisto: Apart from your knowledge of course.
skip_491: duhhhhhhh
mrbisto: No idea..?
skip_491: just joki'n
mrbisto: hmmmm
mrbisto: Well throughout the course we have been answering in just text..
mrbisto: this has served us all well..
mrbisto: But.. you know often a pictures is worth a thousands words (is that the saying?)
mrbisto: An example of this would be a sketch diagram of drum microphone placement no?
skip_491: yes
chemirastudio: yep says I
mrbisto: another "classic" would be the ADSR sketch ben draw your attention to last week.
skip_491: ahh i missed that
chemirastudio: sec skip
mrbisto: This is a new approach to answering, but should come naturally in your minds eye.. when needed.
mrbisto: The point is take a ruler and some pencils as well as plenty of pens.
chemirastudio: http://kulturinformatik.uni-lueneburg.de/veranst/dig_medientechnik/images/ADSR-Hkurve.gif
skip_491: thanks chem
chemirastudio: sorry http://www.iaekm.org/images/0301_fe_2_b.jpg
chemirastudio: welcome
mrbisto: Anthing else you might wana take?
mixindown: calculator
skip_491: right on mix
mrbisto: good
skip_491: premade templates
skip_491: for makin cirlces
mrbisto: might come in handy for some BPM questions..
skip_491: ahhhhh spell check?
mrbisto: yeah why not skip, good point.
chemirastudio: the blerb is non programable no organizers
chemirastudio: is that for me??
mrbisto: yeah that's correct..
skip_491: neatness counts
chemirastudio: solar powered recommmended
skip_491: lol chem
chemirastudio: sorry about the mmmmm's
mrbisto: Now apart from things to take... (you laugh at solar polared I just a solar powered battery for my iPod)
mrbisto: now
mpfcoh OHara has left the conference.

skip_491: good 4 u chris
mrbisto: Regarding exam technique, ben will vocer some of this shortly, with particular attention to the words..
mrbisto: but.
mrbisto: we can also think about timings here first...
mrbisto: how long you got per exam?
mixindown: 3 hours
skip_491: see wat u started chem chris is have'n a bad spellin day too lol
mpfcoh OHara has joined the conference.

chemirastudio: My fist language was english
mrbisto: Now I would seriously plan your time..
skip_491: chris alot dont finish do they?
mrbisto: excuse me?
skip_491: people who take the test do they get to finish the test or do they run outta time and cant finish?
mrbisto: No particular pattern... I have seen some finish within an hour and some run out of time.
skip_491: ok
mrbisto: Point is planning is a good option..
mrbisto: plan what you intend to do with each 20 mins etc..
skip_491: yes sir
mrbisto: For example it is often a good option to spend the first 20 mins reading reading through each question slowely and making the odd note or two on your rough paper...
mrbisto: these little notes can be very useful when you come back and attempt the questions for real.
jaminuk: absolutely!
mrbisto: In addition you will notice that each question has a set allocation of marks listed next to it..
mrbisto: so you can gain confidence (or not) easily by briefly scanning for "dead certain" marks..
skip_491: is it better to skip a question u dont kow?
mrbisto: Also note, you do not have to answer in squencial order...
mrbisto: So you can Skip as Skip states...
mrbisto: and answer questions 4, 8, 1, 10, 14, 7 etc...
mrbisto: providing it is very clear you indicate which question you afre answering.
acousticalweaponsdivision: is there a pass mark or do we have to 100% the exam?
mrbisto: You could take one page for each qeustion even ... and then collate them at the end..
skip_491: good question
chemirastudio: 98 is a pass
skip_491: lol chem
skip_491: is that right chris?
skip_491: <<<<
chemirastudio: too much suspense
mrbisto: How do you wish me to answer such humour?
skip_491: ?
mrbisto: For people that live in NS the pass rate is 98
skip_491: somethin like 79 is a pass
chemirastudio: aaaaaaa
skip_491: lol
mrbisto: for the rest of the world it is much lower in fact.
skip_491: rloffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
jaminuk: lol
skip_491: hhahahhahhaaaaaaaa
acousticalweaponsdivision: hehe
skip_491: that be u chem lol
chemirastudio: please I won't be bad ever again
chemirastudio: I'll be quiet
mrbisto: Go and stand in the corner with your hands on your head.
skip_491: send chem to da corner boss lol
chemirastudio: again
chemirastudio: man
chemirastudio: OK
skip_491: heheheheehehe
acousticalweaponsdivision: haha to the naughty chair with ye
mixindown: brb
skip_491: good we all get to move up da ladder there 's a spot open lol
mrbisto: Now C&G generally have what is known as a fluctuating grading system..
chemirastudio: mix is getting the whip
skip_491: laffin
skip_491: is this essay style?
mrbisto: This means that depending on the year and the results globally, the thresholds shift ever so slightly annually.
skip_491: ok gradin on a curve
mrbisto: and I'm not talking aural theory now.
skip_491: lol
jaminuk: ha
mrbisto: If for example they set a massively tricky paper.. and dozens do very badly, they sometimes apply a "badness filter" lol
jaminuk: low cutoff, high resonance
mrbisto: hehe
skip_491: heheheheehe
x016178: who are they?
mrbisto: SO in that case the pass rate would be somewhat lower..
mrbisto: C&G brent..
mrbisto: City & Guilds
skip_491: wat herz u set dat at? lol
mrbisto: Generally thoough you can divide the grading into three categories... or three bandwidths.
mrbisto: 0 - 44 Hz.. pass
skip_491: laffin
jaminuk: haha
mrbisto: 45 - 55 Hz merit
mrbisto: no that's incorrect..
skip_491: now pay tention chem lol
mrbisto: 0 - 44 Hz fail
chemirastudio: I am
mrbisto: 45 - 55 Hz credit
mrbisto: or pass...
mrbisto: 56 - 76 Hz merit
mrbisto: 77 - 100 Hz distinction..
chemirastudio: White noise??
jaminuk: this is all subsonic stuff....
chemirastudio: can I come out?
mrbisto: Chem stop asking, you will be told when it is safe for you.
mixindown: back
skip_491:
mixindown: lol
chemirastudio: I hate this subserviate just to be funny stuff but OK
skip_491: chem lol
mrbisto: last cohort we had a few distinctions
mrbisto: bunch of merits (or credits, mistyped above)
skip_491: but were so easily entertained
mrbisto: and some passes, nobody failed.. or ever has to date... SO THE PRESSURE IS ON
mrbisto: Chem, come on out the corner..
chemirastudio: yippeee
chemirastudio: Yip
chemirastudio: yip
chemirastudio: yip
skip_491: yippeeeeee chem come and play
chemirastudio: sorry
mrbisto: IS that grading system clear?
skip_491: thats ok ur gonna get distinction
mixindown: yes
skip_491: yes
reynola31: yep
acousticalweaponsdivision: indeedy
skip_491: chem?
mrbisto: good.
chemirastudio: yes
chemirastudio: clear, crystal
mrbisto: Now back to timings.. timing IS critical and so is neatness to an extent..
mrbisto: It's also a good idea to conserve 10 mins (or longer) at the end to allow for you to create a neat verison of your answers..
skip_491: yup
mrbisto: Being an exmainer myself (marking exams) it never ceases to amaze me how some students think I have an all encompaasing intelligability filter and can read their hideious handwriting ...
skip_491: i bet
mrbisto: be warned, if the examiner canot read it, you won't pick up any marks, no matter how correct it is.
mrbisto: I'm sure you all have delicious handwriting however.
skip_491: <<<coughs lol
mrbisto: spellling mistakes have zero significance, but legibility does.
chemirastudio: It was an injury from a tramatic event
mrbisto: Chem you on drugs today?
skip_491: lol
skip_491: its the wineeeeeeeee lol
mrbisto: ah that would do it.
chemirastudio: No I thought I explained the brew stuff
mrbisto: Ok, now if I can pass this over to Ben, for a detailed insight into question breakdown and additional technique..
jaminuk: ok
mrbisto: after which we will present some general questions covering all in the workshop.
mrbisto: thanks ben
jaminuk: few things here about questions and answering
jaminuk: firstly, you want to get over to the examiner that you have an understanding of the concept
jaminuk: rather than just regurgitating answers
jaminuk: some questions are worth many points as chris pointed out earlier
jaminuk: to gain these extra points sometimes you will be expected to delve into your understanding of the concept
jaminuk: also
jaminuk: as in most exams of this type there is a 'method' to answering the questions
jaminuk: this involves 'breaking down' the question
jaminuk: and then identifying what information the examiner is asking for
jaminuk: it is quite common to regurgitate some of the question in your answer
jaminuk: this is quite a useful technique as it can prevent you falling into writing answers that are too short/1 word etc
jaminuk: lets have a look at a question from a past paper here a moment;
jaminuk: What is 'groove quantization'?
jaminuk: 6 marks
jaminuk: So how do you think you would go about getting the full 6 marks here?
mixindown: First explain what quantization is.
jaminuk: excellent mixindown
mixindown: Then explain what groove quantization is in relation to it
jaminuk: brilliant
jaminuk: so lets look at the 'model answer' for that question;
jaminuk: Answer = Normal quantization places the start of each note precisely onto a grid of quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes or other regular pattern. Groove quantization uses a grid which has been created manually or by analysis of the performance of a drummer or other musician
jaminuk: so as you can see here, to gain the full marks you would have had to show some broader understanding of the concept
jaminuk: you could have just answered very shortly without referring to normal quantisation
jaminuk: but you wouldn't have got the marks
jaminuk: is that clear?
acousticalweaponsdivision: yes
x016178: yep
mixindown: yes
reynola31: yep
chemirastudio: yes
jaminuk: good
skip_491: yes
jaminuk: now as i said the key to many of these questions is analysing the question
jaminuk: hold on just grabbing another question....
jaminuk: sorry pc problems here, grrrrr
chemirastudio: apple??
skip_491: dell?
mrbisto: no thanks
jaminuk: ha! no just msword playing up
jaminuk: sorry about this
mrbisto: When are the exams by the way?
mixindown: Tuesday and Wednesday this week coming
chemirastudio: tues weds
skip_491: gl everyone
mrbisto: http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-188.html
mrbisto: there is a thread for bringing us the news.... as it happens
jaminuk: right think i got it working!
jaminuk: 10) Explain the relationship of sequencer tracks, MIDI channels and synthesiser voices.
(4 marks)

jaminuk: so here you can see that you are being asked to offer an explanation of 3 concepts
jaminuk: again, the key here to getting the full marks is set out in the question with the word 'relationship'
jaminuk: so, using your broader understanding of the topic of sequencing
jaminuk: you would ideally link all 3 explanations together in a clear manner
jaminuk: now i know that may sound obvious now - but in an exam situation it is little things like this that can get you the extra few marks
skip_491: with ya ben
jaminuk: this is why it is so important that at the start of the exam you should allow yourself to read the questions AT LEAST 3 times before you attempt any answering (obviously as chris said make notes on the paper as ideas come to you)
jaminuk: you need to have it 100% clear in your head exactly what the examiner wants to see from you
jaminuk: ok one last example i want to use re: this concept
jaminuk: 6) Digital audio allows the user to process sounds in ways that were previously impossible. Explain this with relation to:
a) Time stretching
b) Pitch transposition
( 4 marks )

mpfcoh OHara has joined the conference.

jaminuk: what do you think you would need to do here to get full marks? again take notice of the wording of the question
skip_491: wave back mp
mpfcoh: sorry folks, connection dropped
mixindown: Explain your understanding of analogue recording first
skip_491: algorithyms?
mixindown: then your understanding of time stretch and pitch transposition
jaminuk: good stuff mix - so using your understanding of analogue why do you think that time and pitch were chosen as the 2 examples?
mixindown: It could not be done with tape
mixindown: time stretch
mixindown: Pitch transposition
jaminuk: what would happen if you tried to 'timestretch' with tape?
chemirastudio: pitch change
mixindown: How could you?
skip_491: distortion?
jaminuk: slow down the tape machine would be a 'timestretch'
jaminuk: but....
skip_491: increase the speed of the tape?
jaminuk: obviously in the world of analogue tape time and pitch are inherently linked
chemirastudio: up for faster down for slower
jaminuk: so for instance with this question your opening part of the answer could briefly explain the time/pitch relationship in pre-digital (i.e. analogue) systems
mixindown: sorry brb
jaminuk: k
jaminuk: chris - do we want to get a quiz going?
mrbisto: Well, I did have that intention..
mrbisto: although we might be better off opening the room up now for inclusion of the others.. might be C&G overload otherwsie.. guys?
jaminuk: k
skip_491: hey ben is there a model answer for that last question?
jaminuk: sure let me just grab it
jaminuk: answer = Before the advent of digital audio, the only way of changing the duration of a sound involved changing its pitch, either a lower pitch resulted from a longer duration, or a higher pitch resulted from a shorter duration, and vice versa. In digital audio the sound can be analysed using a Fourier transform into its amplitude and frequency components. It can then be re synthesised so that those components and their relationships stay intact but have a uniform mathematical operation conducted on all of different frequencies resulting in pitch change without change of duration, or spaced further apart, resulting in time stretch without change of pitch.
x016178: ben do you have a model answer for the midi channel question as well?
jaminuk: which MIDI channel question was that one?
x016178: : 10) Explain the relationship of sequencer tracks, MIDI channels and synthesiser voices.
jaminuk: ah yes
jaminuk: hold on
jaminuk: MIDI answer = Sequencer tracks store MIDI instructions. MIDI channels direct those instructions to a particular destination. Synthesiser voices respond to any instructions arriving in the MIDI channel that they are set to respond to.
skip_491: can a AES signal and a time clock signal be sent to the same unit at the same time on different cables?
mrbisto: AES is a clock signal skip
jaminuk: i would imagine it depends on the units involved - what units are we talking about and with what i/o
mixindown: back
jaminuk: but do you mean aes/ebu on a XLR
skip_491: AES is a slave and so is the other unit
skip_491: yes ben
skip_491: clock signal on spdif
jaminuk: in what context do you want to do this skip?
skip_491: want to send AES signal from mixer to processor then back to mixer as insert
skip_491: but signal will not go to processor without a word clock signal
skip_491: processor is a voice prism
skip_491: this is the modeling card that i am pluggin into
jaminuk: and whats sending the s/pdif?
skip_491: big ben word clock which is slaved to fireface 800
chemirastudio: http://www.riksmusic.com/tc_electronics/vp_plus.htm
jaminuk: i would have thought that you could tell the prism to accept clock on the s/pdif input
skip_491: best clock i have
skip_491: it seems to lock to my clock
skip_491: but no signal
jaminuk: hmmmm
chemirastudio: your AES EBU are XLR
skip_491: yes
chemirastudio: the XLR's need to connect to AES EBU XLR's too
skip_491: i got that chem
jaminuk: so i guess its looking at the s/pdif for the signal as well as the clock - not familiar with the prism i have to admit
chemirastudio: what does the VP connect too again?
skip_491: the mixer
chemirastudio: OK mixer is a...
skip_491: on a AES card
skip_491: tascam DM24
chemirastudio: ? it has one
chemirastudio: ok
skip_491: yes
skip_491: and snake
skip_491: 8 channnels in and out
chemirastudio: says independantly switchable
skip_491: ben signal is on AES, clock signal is spdif only
chemirastudio: between APDIf and AES
chemirastudio: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Mar02/articles/tascamdm24.asp
skip_491: i wana use both
chemirastudio: cannot by the looks of it
chemirastudio: cake josaphine
skip_491: thats right chem thats wat i got
skip_491: i'm struggle'n with it
chemirastudio: Says it's switchable in software
chemirastudio: ?? what software?
skip_491: this mixer is a soft mixer
jaminuk: i would have thought it would be switchable to be honest as most outboard with dig i/o allows you to choose from posible dig clocks
skip_491: not all paths are logically mapped
skip_491: yes ben i have choices
skip_491: but i want to send
skip_491: them separately the clock signals
skip_491: so that there is no latency in the clock
skip_491: i.e. no daisy chain
skip_491: but maybe this cant be done?
chemirastudio: clock rates may be independant and paths may be too! Are you linking to an actual AES EBU?
skip_491: yes modeling card is AES
chemirastudio: man, It is probably possible but I'm too far away to fiddle
skip_491: it maybe just a button i have pushed wrong ? i dont kow
chemirastudio: that is too true read the manual AGAIN
skip_491: laffin
hoaxwagon has joined the conference.

hoaxwagon: hello everyone
mrbisto: hi
skip_491: hi hoax
jaminuk: hi hoax
mixindown: hi hoax
skip_491: i just wanted to kow for sure if people do it that way?
acousticalweaponsdivision: hello
x016178: hi hoax
