Removing Vocals with EQ  Reply with quote

You can use EQ, but it destroys the backing track, there are programs that detect vocals and actively notch out those frequencies but you get a strange "ghost" vocal, not nice.

Yeah, I was wondering if the "ghost" vocal is the reverb? Because it does sound like a reverb track played solo.

I suppose that could be part of it, but i think its mainly just because the software cant cut everything of those frequencies, i thing about 12db of reduction in the vocal range is the maximum vocal reduction software will take away. otherwise all you would hear of the backing track is things like bass, and cymbals.

One method which works on some stereo material is based on FFT like a lot of recent DSP audio stuff.
The audio is split into, say, 8192 frequencies, about 50 times per sec. Then individual frequencies are suppressed on the bases of left-right differences, phase and/or amplitude. So the vocal is dynamically notched out on a very fine grid. It's not perfect but works fairly well in a number of cases.
