mrbisto: I was just playing around with my Skype conenction.
jaminuk: oh yeah?
mrbisto: Yeah I'm pretty impressed with it.
jaminuk: tis good stuff
mrbisto: Well they have an option which is SkypeOut, and SkypeIN
mrbisto: so apart form the free service, which is FREE Ip telephony..
mrbisto: you can also have an option where users on standard land lines can call in.
jaminuk: thats pretty smart
mrbisto: As well as that I can call out to a land line... on a global rate (very cheap)
mrbisto: 1 pence a min
jaminuk: very cheap indeed
mrbisto: SO I could like give skip a call.. or rachel.. and it would cost me 1 pence a min
skip_491: you can call me on your Skype phone
mrbisto: I'd be talking to my compuiter (with a bluetooth headset) and they might be on their home phone
skip_491: thats kool
jaminuk: thats ideal - of course if they also had skype then you could use the free option too over the 'net
mixindown: http://www.skype.com/products/
mrbisto: Yeah, as well as that group conferences are doable.
jaminuk: looks like a good protocol
skip_491: thats great
mrbisto: so potentially we could all be here talking.. (but the beauty is it works with phones also, so we could be onn the beach)
jaminuk: sounds good!
skip_491: we can be in yahoo here talkin right now and its free too
mrbisto: So if you guys grab that we can do some skypig in the future..
skip_491: just hit voice up at the top of the tool bar and your voiceing right now
mrbisto: well not skypig but skyping .. a skypig is a pink floyd thing
jaminuk: ha
skip_491: lol
mrbisto: Skip yeah I know, but it's not connected with phones yet.. or voice mail
jaminuk: is skip here?
skip_491: no you cant do it thru the phone but you can do it thru the computer but yah i understand
mrbisto: Although yahoo are concerned about this as they released version 7 of messenger (beta) with phone options now.
skip_491: yah i kow
mrbisto: yes ben skip is here, you can't see him?
jaminuk: chris - can you reinvite me into the conference - i'm only getting a couple of people in the room and not hering anyone other than you!
mrbisto: yep
jaminuk: back in a sec
jaminuk has left the conference.
jaminuk has joined the conference.
jaminuk: hello - anyone there?
skip_491: theres ben noww
skip_491: hiiiiiii
jaminuk: ah i can see you know skip
mrbisto: The servers Skype use are good, plenty of bandwidth still.. even though 3 millions users..
jaminuk: hi skip!
mrbisto: it's good quality, not top end but good.
skip_491: hi ben hows it goin?
skip_491: it looks really amazing chris they have it for all operating systems
jaminuk: not too bad skip
mixindown: brb
mrbisto: Yeah skip we'll give it a whirl sometime
skip_491: u bettttttttt
skip_491: i wouldnt mind taken er for a spin
skip_491: lol
mrbisto: More of that skpying a little later.. I have a plan..
mrbisto: but
mrbisto: We must tlak of exams.
mrbisto: surely?
skip_491: rot rohhhhh
mrbisto: a couple here who sat exams right?
skip_491: mix and chem? lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: and me
mrbisto: chem stepped out for a bit..
skip_491: oh yah how could i forget awd shhhhh
mrbisto: acoustical, spill the beans, rachel also sta exams
skip_491: hope everyone did good
mrbisto: where did you take yours acoustical?
acousticalweaponsdivision: in gloucester
mrbisto: and how was that?
skip_491: long and hard ? lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: didnt take too long to get there, somehow missed all the traffic
mixindown: back
skip_491: just drivin to the BIG city was a big thing huh lol
skip_491: wb mix
acousticalweaponsdivision: the exam went ok, there were 2 questions that i had a bit of a nightmare with
mrbisto: you did?
mrbisto: share them with the others here
mrbisto: listens attentively
skip_491:
acousticalweaponsdivision: one about pc vs mac music software
mrbisto: Oh they like putting the pressure on don't they?
acousticalweaponsdivision: haha i remember thinking 'i hope there arent any questions about macs'
mrbisto: doh!
skip_491:
jaminuk: ouch
acousticalweaponsdivision: hah and it was the first question
mrbisto: man!
jaminuk:
skip_491: oh no
mrbisto: screams in a mad fit
skip_491: so u answerd that one last right lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: heh yes i came back to that one
mrbisto: and how did you tackle the question? Di you understand what they were asking?
acousticalweaponsdivision: it was the advantages and disadvantages out each
mrbisto: like generally?
acousticalweaponsdivision: so i did manage to answer it but not as i'd have liked to have answered it
acousticalweaponsdivision: yeah, the general advantages and disadvantages
mrbisto: Hmm I wonder what are the general advantages and disadvantages
mrbisto: Price, compatibility?
jaminuk: well this is a much less defined area than it used to be
jaminuk: obviously with macs, as there are limted configs, then it is easier to test software with all hardware combinations
jaminuk: however, due to smaller mac market share, there tends to be less software available
jaminuk: operationally there is very little between them these days - most of the big guns like steinberg, digidesign ensure that operationally they are identical
mrbisto: Did you mention you must be fashion concious to use a mac?
jaminuk: ha
skip_491: bling bling
jaminuk: you have to work in shoreditch to own a mac!
acousticalweaponsdivision: haha i'm afraid i left that out
skip_491: lol
mrbisto: yeah..
skip_491: pictures a little guy throwing money out lol
mrbisto: how did you get on with that mixin?
jaminuk: lol
skip_491: yah mix now ur in the HOT SEAT LOL
mrbisto: mix is waiting for curry it seems.
skip_491: is he gonna share?
jaminuk: as john lennon said - instant korma.....
mrbisto: too hot forme
skip_491: hold'n my spoon lol
mrbisto: oh ben..
jaminuk: sorry, that was poor
skip_491: lol
mixindown: Ok, as Ben said, not so many differences now....
mixindown: OS etc
mixindown: I also mentioned the drivers. RTAS / ASIO etc
mixindown: Instant curry's gonna get ya
mrbisto: ah yes good one, the different wrappers.
skip_491: lol
mixindown: Slow connection here tonight guys, getting 5 or 6 lines down on my screen at a time.
mrbisto: the plugin formats etc? you get into that? - I guessed covered with what ben mentioned.
mixindown: What was that ethernet acoustic?
mrbisto: is this a question?
mixindown: Yes.
mixindown: Yes. I cant rememer the KEY WORD though of the question.
acousticalweaponsdivision: the question about collisions?
mrbisto: ??
mixindown: you got it.
mrbisto: road traffic?
mixindown: lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: ethernet collisions
mixindown: I did not have a clue so I guessed. lol
skip_491: ok who's on da wrong page lol
skip_491: wat was your guess mix?
mrbisto: this is a bandwidth thing right
mrbisto: ?
mixindown: I think I wrote something about too much information going over the ethernet.
jaminuk: its to do with sharing the bandwidth between workstations
mrbisto: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/63/eth_collisions.html
mrbisto: I have a really bad system here where the collisions on my shared TV/internet system often fight for the same bandwdith
jaminuk: really?
mrbisto: annoying.. I have to leave the TV off.. as my bandwidth goes right down.
mixindown: And a good question was words to the effect of "How would it affect mic placement when a conductor is conducting and singing at the same time"?
skip_491: or pay for 2 connections
jaminuk: ha
mrbisto: "A collision is the mechanism used by Ethernet to control access and allocate shared bandwidth among stations that want to transmit at the same time on a shared medium. Because the medium is shared, a mechanism must exist where two stations can detect that they want to transmit at the same time. This mechanism is collision detection. "
mrbisto: much like road collisions..
mrbisto: yes skip, but because it is a TV service also, it is rapid without the TV on..
skip_491: yah
skip_491: but then u cant watch the news and work at the same time
mixindown: How do they expect ya to get the answer to something like that when it isn't covered in the course?
mrbisto: well, technically the heading is...
skip_491: awwwww mix thats not how it works lol
mixindown: lol
mrbisto: Bus systems in common use Internal External Networks
mixindown: technically, lovely word
skip_491: too bad u didnt have a SKYPE CONNECTION u could of called in lol
mrbisto: But I'll agree with you if you said "a little rich throwing that one in"
mrbisto: Anyone get this question? I mean were ok with it?
mixindown: I must have missed the collision lesson.
acousticalweaponsdivision: think i answered it well enough
skip_491: mix ur a treatit was a bus wreck
mrbisto: Mixing no, the areas are massive, if you had to completely cover everythgn about "networks" by going on the title "networks" alone, you;d be able to go get an IT tech job..
jaminuk: to be honest networking is several courses within itself which is nigh on impossible to cover all aspects of - i am suprised that they asked that though.
skip_491: they wanted to kow if everybody really truely understood
mrbisto: all you can do, as you have is, is do the best you can in the time you have, having 15 questions from a potential 10000 is kinda hard.. so don't take it too bad.
mixindown: I specialize only in collision. lol
mrbisto: I'll actually have a word about that one though with them..
jaminuk: there are usually 1 or 2 killer questions most years - this is often to prevent everyonge getting artificially high grades if you get what i mean by that
skip_491: skip looks down at dent and fender
mrbisto: as I feel it as I said earlier "rich"
mixindown: no , all is ok, your gonna get them, I'm just voicing off thats all. I was pleased with the questions in general.
mixindown: spot on jaminuk
mrbisto: NO regardless of how you feel.. I'd still have a word once I had seen the paper, which I have not yet
mrbisto: you know?
skip_491: you go ben
skip_491: i mean chris
mixindown: yes but the questions is general covered a lot.
mrbisto: I remember one year we had a big complaint.. not here online but I tuaght this in classrooms before..
mrbisto: in fact everyone moaned globally
mrbisto: they just dont like curry munchers
jaminuk: lol
skip_491: lol
mrbisto:
mixindown: I think that a "level playing field" is good but as Ben said. lol CURRY MUNCHERS
skip_491: curry munchers united
mrbisto: ben got it spot on..
mixindown: Hang on MR Veal!
mixindown: lol
mrbisto: hehe
jaminuk: haha
mrbisto: I have good hopes for you all..
mixindown:
skip_491: the best
mrbisto: Now moving on.. time is racing
mixindown: hoho
mrbisto: It's gonna be sad when the C&Gers leave so we must all stay in touch..
jaminuk:
skip_491: with ya chris
mrbisto: you have a thread for keeping in touch http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-188.html
mixindown: exept for skip of course.
skip_491: lol mix
jaminuk:
mrbisto: yeah skip has bought a monthly subscription
mrbisto: good man..
skip_491: hehehehe
skip_491: needs yearly subscription
mrbisto: which any of you can also.. or take further courses, of course.
mrbisto: The next round of C&G is september through to December..
mrbisto: though the other courses can be started at any point
mrbisto: Beatworld you here?
mrbisto: he must be busy..
mrbisto: beatworld is taking the waves option, and some of the stuff we hear form that one is great..
skip_491: mix i was reading bout your takin of ur test wowww that musta been hard
mrbisto: I can imagine though for C&Gers at this point it's a relief more than anything..
mixindown: not bad skip. and yes, it's a relief. can get down to some writing and recording at last.
mrbisto: I bet
skip_491: there ya go
skip_491: the fun stuff now
mrbisto: looking forward to hearing some of that..
mrbisto: I was listening to some stuff sent in for the audiocourses.com presentation today.. some great tunes!
mixindown: will do, I'll send ya all copies.
mrbisto: instinct sent in his EP.. it's very good.
skip_491: yah havent heard from him in awhile
mrbisto: yeah he;s been busy, got a great EP though..
mpfcoh has joined the conference.
skip_491: wats EP?
skip_491: hi mp
mpfcoh: evenin all, sorry i'm late
jaminuk: hi mpf
mrbisto: EP, as in not an LP
mrbisto: Extended Play
mrbisto: mini album, I guess
skip_491: ahhhhhh i was closethought extra play
skip_491: and do we get to hear it ?
jaminuk: Magical Mystery Tour was an EP i think
mrbisto: skip, we will use some of his stuff yes.
mixindown: Elvis Presley skip, he recorded a track with elvis dont you read the papers!
skip_491: laffin
skip_491: missed that weeks paper shhhhhh
mixindown: lol
skip_491: was taht ghost town productions?
mixindown: jaminuk yes it was (and it had a booklet). hehe
skip_491: lol
jaminuk: EPs were much more common 'back in the day' - seems that only smaller acts and unsigned acts do them these days
mixindown: big in the 50/s 60's
mixindown: very collectable some of them
skip_491: i think ELP did an EP lol
jaminuk: thats a mouthful!
mrbisto: Yes that's right it's more of a "cool" thing to sue these days.. I mean you can have a double album or an album with 9 tracks on.. they are still an album.. yet this EP i think may even have 9 tracks on..
skip_491: emmerson lake and palmer
mrbisto: So technically, or "potentially" it is an album too
jaminuk: ELP not ELO right?! were they emo? ha
mixindown: lol skip
mixindown: lots had tracks you couldn't get on LP or single even back in the day
skip_491: hahahahahhhaaaaarlof
mrbisto: Good point..
jaminuk: couple of my favourite bands, lemon jelly and the beta band, both released there first albums which were essentially 3 EPs they're released earlier on one 'disc'
jaminuk: the beta band album is actually called "The 3 Eps"
skip_491: like atrilliogy?
skip_491: 3 works that tell a story
jaminuk: kind of, but a retrospective look as the 3 EPs had been released over a couple of years before being stuck together - it's interesting to hear the lack of cohesion compared to a 'proper' album
mrbisto: Thanks, but no thanks.
jaminuk: when the EPs are spread out like that you do to tend to notice improvements as you go along
skip_491: that makes sense
jaminuk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000023YGK/qid=1118610979/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-7659575-5181455
mixindown: write it....then quickly RECORD IT.
skip_491: wat happened to x
mrbisto: grabbing a beer
skip_491: dont spill dat on teh mixer lol
mrbisto: too precious (the beer)
jaminuk: haha
skip_491: i just got all the curry cleaned out lol
mrbisto: lol
mrbisto: SKip you get your clocking sorted out yet?
skip_491: yes i did get all teh clock'n
jaminuk: woo hoo!
skip_491: but still no signal on the voice
jaminuk: dohhhh
skip_491: did have the clock on the voice prism set to internal which was one problem
mrbisto: right
jaminuk: ooops
skip_491: and also did not have the clock terinated at teh mixer which was the other problem
jaminuk: ah yes you need those little terminators on the end
skip_491: but AES card still does not work
jaminuk:
skip_491: lol
skip_491: shhhhhh ben
jaminuk: haha
skip_491: why wont that go thru?
skip_491: will try card on another application
skip_491: but havent' had time
jaminuk: is there absolutely definitely signal being routed through the AES?
skip_491: not sure
skip_491: thats why i have to use something else to plug it into
skip_491: i think i will use presonus firepod as soon as i hook it back up
x016178 has joined the conference.
x016178: Hi gang sorry I'm late. Sorry not gang, graduates.

mrbisto: skip it's a bit of both I guess
mrbisto: you gotta know your stuff and you gotta know your people.
skip_491: how bout looking at companies who want to do training films
skip_491: thats true chris
x016178: Was over at a friends house a couple days ago. And he had a great idea.
x016178: He's put together a dvd
mrbisto: yeah?
x016178: of himself with flash
x016178: and took a movie
x016178: from a friend of his
x016178: and replaced the music with it with his own tracks
x016178: Then set up many categories of genres
x016178: so you could here what he's capable of .
skip_491: sweet
x016178: And then sending it out to production companies
skip_491: good resume"
skip_491: how long did that take?
x016178: 3 days to learn flash
skip_491: laffin
skip_491: ohhhhhhhhhh
x016178: 2 days for every genre song
x016178: But he's english

mpfcoh: who me?
mrbisto: yes
mpfcoh: nah, unfortunately been up against it with work the last couple weeks
mrbisto: yes you said you were gonna have a lot on.
skip_491: thats no fun
mpfcoh: every time i start i get dragged away again....
mpfcoh: such is life
skip_491: tell the boss u got better things to do
mrbisto: indeed.
mpfcoh: i'll get there though
mrbisto: I think he is the boss.
skip_491: ohhhhhhhhhhh
mpfcoh: yeah, i am the boss but i got a ver demanding couple of clients
mpfcoh: could tell em to piss of but then i'd be broke
skip_491: lol
skip_491: the customer is always right
skip_491: wat service are u providing?
mpfcoh: yeah, even when they're wrong...
mpfcoh: market reasearch work for financial software firms
mpfcoh: much prefer to be makin music
skip_491: bean countin?
mpfcoh: yeah, more like searchin for new beans
jaminuk: ha
skip_491: bet u could make a song bout that
jaminuk: where have you 'bean' all my life?
jaminuk: <ducks>
mpfcoh: ouch
skip_491: new beans is that like givin 18 yr olds credit cards?
skip_491: lol @ jam
mpfcoh: skip, no its more like cold calling investment bankers
skip_491: i think i smell mackerl? hmmm
mpfcoh: borin stuff, lets talk about music instead
mrbisto: talk about yours mike..
skip_491: that sounds exciting
mpfcoh: mine? well now...
skip_491: lol
mixindown: bwankers
mpfcoh: lol mix
skip_491:
mrbisto: Mike got it going on with production lads.. you might leanr something
mpfcoh: wow
mrbisto: Drums are gonna be the next move though eh mike?
mpfcoh: ok, where dyou want me to start chris?
mrbisto: Live drums..
mpfcoh: yeah, my current ambition is to get into a stusio & learn how to mike up a kit
mpfcoh: stusio = studio
mpfcoh: (fat fingers)
skip_491: taht can take days
skip_491: (bad speller) lol
mrbisto: I find live drum microphone technique and the creating of "the sound" an art form..
mpfcoh: last track i did, i got a drummer mate to record the drums remotely & send wav files of the individual drum tracks
mrbisto: with some good theory grouding thrown in
mpfcoh: bu obviously by doing things that way, i had no control over how the drums were actually recorde, only how they were mixed
mpfcoh: and i struggled to get a good snare sound
skip_491: why is that?
mpfcoh: well, drum mic placement is hugelyy important in tracking drums
mpfcoh: so if you get the wrong souund at source, it's very difficult to correct it when mixing
skip_491: was his mic too close?
skip_491: did he use a clip -on?
mpfcoh: not sure where it was to be honest
mrbisto: that's true enough mike. it;s all in the source.
mpfcoh: skip, not sure what he used exactly
mpfcoh: i thought the wavs he sent me were pretty good sounding, but when micing, it was difficult to get the right balance between the snare mic & overhead mics
mpfcoh: micing = mixing
mpfcoh: (fat fingers again)
skip_491: was it that a gate was needed during recording?
mrbisto: It's often a technique so overlooked with project and home studios... the drums that is. sure sample CDs exist .. but..
mpfcoh: again, without being there I'm not sure what exactly it needed - it's just that the snare sound wasn't right
jaminuk: which track is this mpf?
mpfcoh: that's why i'd like to go into a studio & watch a pro mic up a kit, see how they get the "right" sound for a particular track
mrbisto: good move ben.. let's hear it.
mpfcoh: chris, you got a link?
mrbisto: ill grab it
mpfcoh: cheers
mrbisto: title mike?
mpfcoh: Call_On_Me_MOH.mp3
mrbisto: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/Week%204%20-%20Country%20Rock%20Music%20Production/Call_On_Me_MOH.mp3
mrbisto: try that
skip_491: www.rockhousemethod.com>this is how to mic a band for ulitimate live sound
mrbisto: is that the corretc link mike?
mpfcoh: yep that works
jaminuk: snare sounds like it needs more stereo 'space' and a little bit more bite/'zing' on the chorus on that one - only subjective of course
mpfcoh: yeah, you thought it sounded a bit boxy didn't you Chris?
mrbisto: it;s all subjective for sure, I personally don't like the sanre.. the actual snare drum tuning
mrbisto: for started
jaminuk: yeah its low-middy
mrbisto: starters
mrbisto: not what I;d use in that track..
jaminuk: no real crack or snap etc
mrbisto: I;d go for a more "wooden" sounds..
mrbisto: with some good snare spring content
skip_491: well folks i gotta go
mpfcoh: ok, see ya skip
mrbisto: lower mic can help with that.. phase inverted..
jaminuk: k skip
mrbisto: ok skip.
skip_491: i have some things to do before dark
mixindown: Yeah gotta go to guys
skip_491: have a good weekend all
mrbisto: though I still wouldn't like it . the kit is tuned for a more rock sound.
skip_491: i'm gone
mrbisto: but it is subjective
mixindown: and you skip
skip_491: gl mike with the drums too
skip_491: let us kow
