Good question. The band I'm in is still almost completely unknown even in my own local area for the 3 months that we've been together for. We all bring our ideas to the table and punch out some short-term goals regarding where and when to play. Anything beyond that is biting off more than we can chew at this point.
I'm finding our ability to communicate new developements to one another is >the< most helpful thing involved in getting things done. Next, I'd say it's a tie between talent and contacts to get us through some doors that would otherwise be closed, not to mention a certain degree of luck and God's grace, hehe. |

Thanks for the post
Jaehoo
and some great input to get the ball rolling here.
3 months is not a long time at all to establish the "
brand
" of the band, it can take a while.
Have you been in bands previously, have some of the other members of the band been in bands before, do they come with "rent a crowds" ?
I'm aware that having people talk about a band in a small area can be very helpful, and as you say communcation is vital, so extending that out into the community, as well as between the group, is a good move.
I'm sure we have many
lurkers
reading here who might also have some wise words? _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

| Using the net...and band management |
|
|
The internet : Thats how I'v spread my bands music. We haven't been much of a Live Band (since I play most of the instruments myself). What I did was send a mail to all to all the people I know regarding the launch of the band's website and our first single. We got a good response. These people told other people and those people told other people and so on.
The net can be a wonderful tool to spread out your work. And who nows you may land at Papa New Guinea some day and someone there would have listened to your music!
Yeah, transparency in communication between band members is vital. Also each band member should focus more on creating the band's image and not their own personal image. Everybody in a band is important and they should be made to feel important, because in the end you are working with a musicians ego which can sometimes be very fragile! |

Good stuff conquistadore there, yes, the internet is a good tool for spreading the word, giving away free mp3s, giving away free promo material is a good thing as it as like viral marketing, and as you say can end up anywhere.
Though marketing is a little different really to the actual concept of
Band Management
so I don't wish to get off topic.
Perhaps we could steer the thread into a list of qualities a person would need in order to
manage a band
?

| Qualities of a band manager |
|
|
As is said in the previous post:
*Transparencey in communication - very important.
*The manager should have good contacts and should be able to talk the band into doing things and also be able to talk for the band.
*If the manager is stuck with a band that is lost in its success he should be able to remind them of their goals,etc..
*A good bussiness mind - think of profits (by profits I don't only mean monetary profits)
*Trust - the band should be able to trust the manager and the manager should be able to trust the band
*The manager should be aware of not only the goals set for the band but also the goals he/she has set for himself/herself. |

That's a good one..
Anyone else have any experience, stories to tell?
I heard some managers like to carry a cricket bat to keep people in order, - well maybe a little "old school" that. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

Some really good points mentioned. Here are afew that I look for when I refer bands to managers.
First a good manager must be a good leader himself .I don't mean take charge and total control of everything. He must have good morals and values and a good communicater. He should have an upbeat character that should keep the band's moralle up most of the time. You don't want someone that has a negative attitude on life.He should believe in the band .He has to have a good relationship with the band that he is willing to work at the same time the band is commited to do the same.
Has patience you may not be his only client so you don't want or hear about someone else's problems.I've actually seen a manager come in to the studio in a terrible mood that he tore a strip off studio musician for no reason .I had a chat with the young man that was just starting out and the gig the night before did not go as planned. Not a good time to bring items like these out at a recording session.
A good listener. He does'nt want to take the band in areas that the group really does not want to go.He sits down with the band find out what their goals are.Once he has and see the details of what the band wants he tries to understand them he can therefore plan and act accordingly with maybe suggestions and has backup options that they may act upon.
He should be a good problem solver That if it happens he comes accross to the band that we learn from our mistakes using the event as an example ,how to remedy and show the gain in the end. What have we learned from this today?
Contacts are very helpful and also be a business minded person and political.(sometimes has to hobknob with high profile media personalities)
Lets not forget he is also out there to earn a living so money will be an issue with him.the more the band makes the more he makes.
Managers should know what's happening out there in the music scene. He is a member of different groups, associations that keep up with the times. There maybe some seminars out there that the group may benifit from ect...even forums like audiocourses.com and S.O.S are helpful. There may be little tidbits of information that he can relay to the bands.
There are many more qualities of managers that they should have I just thought i'd give a little of what I thought.
keep e'm coming
