How do you boost the volume on a song without it distorting?  Reply with quote

I have put all the tracks into Cubase LE. it's set up exactly how I want it to be. I then bounced the tracks together into one track. Only problem I am having is boosting the overall volume of the whole song. I tried Normalizing it but that did not do anything for it. I am running Cubase LE through an hp pavilion 503n with 384 mb of SDRAM, a 1.7 GHz Intel Celeron Processor, and it has 40 gb of hard disc space.

please let me know if anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it. Thanks

boosting level with compressor  Reply with quote

The simplest way would be to put a compressor in the chain, compress as much as you wish, then use the makeup gain to boost the volume, then insert a limiter into the chain to stop the level going over 0db.

compression  Reply with quote

try using some compression, if you are not familiar with it there are plenty of post here to help you out with it. basically compression makes it louder without distorting it and so you dont have to turn the volume up when the music get quiet and vice versa when it gets louder. hope that helps

Well like everyone here has already told you. you'll have to apply some amount of compression on the track. Just make sure that the compression is applied on the final mix (LR) before you bounce it.
I guess there's enough on this site to help you with basic compression techniques (if you aren't familiar with compression). And one more thing......try not to hyper compress the mix. People tend to do this to get a "loud" sound. You shouldn't be looking to get a loud sound but aim more at achieving a balanced sound. Also, you have to realise that over compression may bring up your levels but it will ruin the sound. Avoid fiddling around with the dynamics of your audio too much, cause if you do you'll end up getting a very dead sound.
cheers!

Yeah, as Amit has said its very easy to get carried away and limit/compress your two track to get a loud sound. Always be clear about that sound you want. Something that is loud may sound great on a first listen but it can be quite fatiguing..

I think it may be best to get a plug in for Cubase like Waves Native Power Pack with the L1 Ultramaximizer. This is used during mastering and you can get the final volume result I think you are looking for without distortion. Once implemented the volume level will match those professional recordings you normally hear.
