Speed of sound and density  Reply with quote

"The speed of sound is faster if the medium is denser."
And this is the equation for the speed of sound : C= root 1.4P/D.
Where, P is pressure, C is speed of sound and D is density (actually suppossed to be represented by 'ro').

But according to the equation the density of the medium is inversely proportional to the speed of sound. This means when the density increases the speed of sound decreases. But this contradicts what happens practicaly right?

OK OK... lol

The velocity of sound is dependant on two things:

1. The mass of the material, which is the density you refer to.
2. The springiness of the material, this is the way the actual molecules interact, or tranfer, energy between themselves. A stronger spring will be able to tranfer energy faster.

There are two types of transfer also

a) longitudinal
b) transverse

I mention that because the same material can exhibit different elasticity depending on the type of transfer, longitudinal or transverse. You can think of wood being an example, wood has grain, and energy will be transferred different with, or against the grain.

The elasticity I am refering to is known as Young's modulus of the material, the higher the figure the more rigid the springiness, and therefore faster the movement of sound.

"Thus the speed of sound increases with the stiffness of the material, and decreases with the density."

To examine the math and experiment with examples see this online example: Speed of sound
