Well not a lot, this is kinda old technology to be getting into these days with so many hard drive based recording systems being the norm.
However, it's all to do with how the tape is pulled or tensioned over the heads. There is a great resource here for it:
Tape Transports

Thanks! I got to work on a 2-track OTARI ATR the other day, and I loved the experience (i've only used hard disk recorders till now)! I plan to record acoustic versions of a few of my songs using it, no ones using it....its just lying around here. |

Im recording an album atm for a 60's revival band, doing mainly beatles stuff.
Im recording the base tracks on an 8-track Reel to Reel (Tascam 38 ) then dumping to an HD24 for overdubs of vocals and extra bits and bobs. The tape sound lovely, but by using adat i get more tracks and the ability to mix down on a PC, The best of both worlds!
I saw a college last week called Full Sail. they have a 2inch 24track machine, but it is hardly ever used, which is a real shame in my opinion. I think all engineers should use tape at least once during training whether they plan to use it later or not, people say its dying out, but ill do my best to see otherwise. _________________ If In Doubt...Hit It With a Hammer, If Still In Doubt... Yes tape is a beautiful thing to work with, it's not longer a real commercial issue as it simply can't compete financially or feature wise as a "serious" format. However, when adopted as an effect it's a wonderful bit of gear.
Getting back to "on topic", I think we are done.. so I'll close this thread and open a new one here:
