iheartmyjennifer: hello?
mrbisto waves at everyone in the room
tobyh1000: hi
kristianeliasson: hello all!
acousticalweaponsdivision: hello
iheartmyjennifer: is it time already?
elainew02474: hi everyone
mrbisto: evening all
mrbisto:
acousticalweaponsdivision: evenin'
iheartmyjennifer: hello
kristianeliasson: evening
tobyh1000: evenin mate
elainew02474: hi!
jaminuk has joined the conference.
jaminuk: hello all
elainew02474: Hi jam'
mrbisto: Welcome everyone to Audiocourses new semester!
mrbisto: I will be talking for a little while, we have a programme.. of things to cover.
mrbisto: Firstly I need to indicate that tonioght we have mostly City & Guilds people here, though we also have a Elaine, hi there, who is doing a slightly different course..
mrbisto: Also I should indicate that acousticalweaponsdivision (i actually like that name now) has been here before and done it all and passed, and is returning for another module.
acousticalweaponsdivision: hehe did you not like it before then?
jaminuk: ha
mrbisto: Also in the room we have jaminuk otherwise known as Ben M who is the Production Advisor for Music Technology.. (no not much alex)
mrbisto:
jaminuk: hi everyone
mrbisto: Ben is also a content editor for the site and we will be seeing some good weekly articles from him, which will aid your course a great deal.
mrbisto: OK now that's the first bit out of the way...
mrbisto: Moving on I would like to cover the purpose of the Live Workshops...
mrbisto: Now as you have all, I'm sure, read through the FQQs and various other articles you will have come to understand that the primary function of these Live Workshops is one of socialising.
mrbisto: FQQa (meant FAQs) frequently asked questions
mrbisto: So we should all have fun here and sure we do serious issue also and the programme is usually lead or guided...
mrbisto: but you should not seek to see this as "the classroom"
mrbisto: in fact with distance learning you should forget the concept of "the classroom" as it is not in existance..
mrbisto: We have differing models for learning and though hard work have year in year out achieved a 100% pass rate
mrbisto: which is NOT easy by any stretch of the imagination.
mrbisto: As i keep chatting, probably best to save up the questions for after..
mrbisto: everyone ok so far?
elainew02474: yes.
iheartmyjennifer: yep
tobyh1000: yep
kristianeliasson: yes
mrbisto:
mrbisto: ok moving on ...
mrbisto: Tis true that we have achieved a 100% rate much of this due to the way knowledge is constructed by YOU the learner...
mrbisto: Old fashioned methoeds of delivery (teacher with a blackboard) are not condusive to bringing about good knowledge retention...
mrbisto: it's the sleepy eyes and fall asleep picture...
mrbisto: however., hen learners are encouraged and motivated to contruct their own knowledge by following a journey from point x and arriving themselevs at point z, something important takes place.. a construction on one's knowledge.
mrbisto: Now this is not meant to be an educaitonal seminar
mrbisto: but I feel you understand this right?
mrbisto: Excuse my typing my fingers stray on adjacent keys often
mrbisto: Now moving on I bet you are all wondering about when and how you will get your weekly tasks?
mrbisto: Or do you all know?
iheartmyjennifer: nope
kristianeliasson: not at all
tobyh1000: ho
tobyh1000: no
elainew02474: there are no weekly tasks?
mrbisto: Good I thought so.. so for this Ben will kindly explain the typical weekly format....
jaminuk: ok
jaminuk: as chris said earlier this workshop is the 'social' element
jaminuk: your tasks/questions will be set on a weekly basis - every monday
jaminuk: you will have one set of questions for Recording Technology (RT)
jaminuk: and one set for Music Technology (MT)
jaminuk: these questions will appear in the relevant forum and will usually be a list of questions
jaminuk: you will be required to answer these questions by posting in the 'thread' in the forum
jaminuk: you will need to answer your questions for the week by the weekend to give myself and chris time to look over them
jaminuk: everyone with me so far?
tobyh1000: yo
kristianeliasson: yep
iheartmyjennifer: alrighty
elainew02474: ok
jaminuk: great
jaminuk: ok so every week you will have your questions
jaminuk: these questions will often be very similiar to the questions that you are likely to be asked in the exam at the end of the year
jaminuk: now, one important thing is this
jaminuk: myself and chris will read your answers every week
jaminuk: we will pick you up on any wrong answers
jaminuk: however
jaminuk: we will not give you any 'grade'
jaminuk: there are a few reasons for this
jaminuk: most importantly, and specifically with RT
jaminuk: there is a lot of leeway with your answers - there is more than one way to answer a question
jaminuk: unlike for instance mathematics, there are no black and white 'right' or 'wrong' answers
jaminuk: there are many ways to skin a cat or mic a drumkit
mrbisto: lol
jaminuk: we will obviously give you feedback and point you in the right direction if you are incorrect but we will not give you any kind of predicted grade/percentage
jaminuk: is everyone clear and ok with this so far?
elainew02474: okely dokley
tobyh1000: yeah
kristianeliasson: yes...does the weekly taks work the same for digital audio?
mrbisto: yes
kristianeliasson: ok
jaminuk: ok to carry on
jaminuk: sorry for this long monologue by the way! I'll only bore you this once!
mrbisto chuckles in amusement
jaminuk: we encourage you as students to meet up and discuss the weeks questions
jaminuk: interaction is a key part of your learning experience
jaminuk: if you can help each other out then please do - this is very important
jaminuk: as far as resources go
jaminuk: the internet is obviously a great resource
acousticalweaponsdivision: good old google
jaminuk: absolutely
jaminuk: there are a lot of great resources out there
jaminuk: again if you find a good resource
jaminuk: share it with your fellow students in the forums
jaminuk: there are also some good textbooks available that myself and chris could post in the forums for you
jaminuk: and magazines such as Sound on Sound, Future Music, Computer Music, Music Tech etc (these are all UK magazines by the way) are all useful
jaminuk: the great advantage of distance learning with a subject like this is actually (believe it or not) the lack of classroom teaching
jaminuk: with classroom teaching, or face to face learning, it is common for information to be 'spoon fed' to the student
jaminuk: as this doesn't translate to distance learning a different kind of learning takes place
jaminuk: this learning is dictated by the individual and is 'student led' - usually this protocol leads to a more thorough grasping of the subject due to the learners increased input
jaminuk: and this 'student based' learning is what we aim for at Audiocourses
jaminuk: and so far, as Chris pointed out, we have a 100% pass rate which is almost unheard of in traditional colleges
jaminuk: anyhow, i think i've bored you enough on this subject !
jaminuk: any questions?
iheartmyjennifer: okay so where is the thread forum?
jaminuk: ok we have 2 - one for MT and one for RT
jaminuk: http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-218.html
iheartmyjennifer: you sent us links in the e-mails right?
jaminuk: is RT
iheartmyjennifer: okay yeah
iheartmyjennifer: gotchya
jaminuk: ok
jaminuk: http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-219.html
jaminuk: MT
mrbisto: http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-220.html DA
jaminuk: sorry i neglected DA there
mrbisto yells, "For Crying out loud!"
iheartmyjennifer: so the questions will go up tomorrow?
jaminuk: yes they will
iheartmyjennifer: alrighty
jaminuk: by the way
jaminuk: you should all have seen the schedule of questions/topics
jaminuk: so you know what to expect every week
jaminuk: have you all seen the 'timetable'
iheartmyjennifer: yes
elainew02474: no
acousticalweaponsdivision: aye
tobyh1000: yeah
kristianeliasson: yes
mrbisto: Elaine you are on a different course, if you could bear with this for now.
elainew02474: ok
jaminuk: if theres no more questions then its over to you chris!
mrbisto: Thanks Ben for a great explanation.
mrbisto: Next topic is: Getting help (e-mail and forums)
mrbisto: Support for your course we typically find is not so much to do with syallabus but usually to do with the systems.
mrbisto: Having trouble uploading/downloading etc.
mrbisto: Support is best got through each other (as ben mentioned previously), helping each other is a very good way to go, particularly as you can be in contact with each other so easily now.
mrbisto: Should you need support form ben or myself during the week the best method is through e-mail..
mrbisto: This keeps a log of the issue and allows us to give the issue suitable time.
mrbisto: Using yahoo messenger is not really a great idea because 1. ben and myself will usually be around in the week live. or 2. we may well be on a different course and not able to give you the time you need.
mrbisto: So your expectations of live support should be very realistic, we often can't immediately be available. This make forum posting and e-mail the best way, I would say forums are the absolute best.
mrbisto: Is that clear with all?
tobyh1000: yea
iheartmyjennifer: yessir
kristianeliasson: yes!
elainew02474: ahoy
mrbisto: Of course if I am online and can help I will, but I am explaining the fact that I may appear to be online but waist depe in a patch bay and busy... which would be frustating for you on the other end.
iheartmyjennifer: understood
mrbisto: Good good
mrbisto: ok the next item is Audio Blogging
mrbisto: Anyone know what this is?
iheartmyjennifer: nope
kristianeliasson: no
elainew02474: not really
tobyh1000: no
mrbisto: OK. I'll explain...
mrbisto: Basically it is another way for you as students to keep us updated and to actually publish publically what you are up to and how you are progressing.
mrbisto: The forums are private, just the course participants get to view those.. however the blog is public.. and a place you should really try to incoporate into your course....
mrbisto: This could be describing a mix... even having an example of a recent tune..
k has joined the conference.
kevbee222: hi
mrbisto: Hi K glad you made it.. bear with us and you will pick it up..
kevbee222: cool
mrbisto: The blog area can be found here: http://www.audiocourses.com/blog
mrbisto: You don't have to go there now, but.... this week I would like you to all try an audio blog.
mrbisto: This works whereby you use your telephone to dial a number follow the instructions,, then leave your message which immediately appears as an mp3 file on that blog.
mrbisto: For instance a week might come where it's all getting a bit heavy and you need to let off some steam about how you feel.. Pick up the phone and tell us all..
mrbisto: Any questions on this aspect?
kevbee222: no
kevbee222: thats cool
kristianeliasson: no
tobyh1000: nope
mrbisto: You can find details of how to audio blog in the forums..
iheartmyjennifer: soudns good
mrbisto: You may at this point start to realise the course, or this environment, really is about what YOU can put in...
kevbee222: mrbisto , the exam invigilation page activity 8 . do we give that to the place where we want to do the exams
mrbisto: that is correct
iheartmyjennifer: is they don't cooperate then what?
mrbisto: You ask a different place
kevbee222: it says that the exam date is june on the form ,but i thought i was doing it in december
mrbisto: yes you are to change the details...
kevbee222: i c
kevbee222: do u know the exam dates
mrbisto: You are too take responsability, you know?
mrbisto: ther are on the schedule.
mrbisto: http://www.audiocourses.com/sections-viewarticle-8.html
mrbisto: We find the best approach is to ask them and then explain City & Guilds will contact them to explain everything.. we just need the contact details for that from you.
kevbee222: ok
mrbisto: Any questions from anyone before we move on?
kevbee222: i looked at the schedule . and im doin music tech and recording techniques ... so thats the 1st and 13th of dec...yea?
mrbisto: yup
iheartmyjennifer: so we only do two modules?
iheartmyjennifer: and they're our choice?
mrbisto: you do the modules you enrolled for..
mrbisto: some are doing one.. some are doing two some are doing three
kevbee222: cool
mrbisto: Do you all know which modules you are taking? - or have enrolled for?
iheartmyjennifer: no
acousticalweaponsdivision: i'm on RT this time
elainew02474: I beilieve mine is basic audio recording
kevbee222: music tech and recording techniques i think
tobyh1000: yeah just MT for me
kristianeliasson: RT, MT and DD I hope
kevbee222: whats dd
iheartmyjennifer: was I supposed to have recieved
iheartmyjennifer: another e-mail
kristianeliasson: digital audio
iheartmyjennifer: ?
mrbisto: Kristian., no..
mrbisto: but yes you are doing all three!
kristianeliasson: ok
kevbee222: what do we get tomorrow
iheartmyjennifer: and me?
mrbisto: a thick ear from teacher..
jaminuk: lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: haha
kristianeliasson: haha
mrbisto:
kevbee222: ????
mrbisto: hehe
mrbisto: ok weekly as ben stated, you always get questions..
mrbisto: these are FUNDAMENTAL to passing your exams...
mrbisto: absolutely paramount....
mrbisto: some weeks we also give you practical tasks... very often in fact..
kevbee222: im not really sure the way it works
mrbisto: as you were late k you're gonna have to read up.. what we covered..
mrbisto: when a practical task is set your MUST always do the questions first.... this is vital...
mrbisto: some weeks you will be sick of them.. but you must must keep going and get your head down during those times...
mrbisto: other times you will find it easy..
mrbisto: but questions are the BIG ISSUE.. ok?
mrbisto: lol
mrbisto: silence huh
mrbisto:
elainew02474:
kevbee222: ok
kristianeliasson: I got it
mrbisto: ok moving on then...
mrbisto: this last section is to discuss your weeks work, you will be getting questions and a listening task.
elainew02474: does this apply to me?
mrbisto: Tomorrow we will post your questions up.. and also post up an MP3... which you are to download..
mrbisto: Yes elaine the questions no but the MP3 yes... i want you to do this too
kevbee222: ok
tobyh1000: right
elainew02474: ok
mrbisto: Now in my mind one of the fundamental concepts of audio production or the ability to be able to create a great mix YOU love.. is to have what I call an "experienced ear".
kevbee222: ive got 2
mrbisto: hehe
mrbisto: We will see boyo
kevbee222: yes we will
mrbisto: joke..
kevbee222: i know
mrbisto: So.. when I talk of an experience ear I'm meaning that it does take experience, coupled with a very widely listened background and an appreciation of a whole heap of musicial styles.
kevbee222: tomorrow is ACRT03 Music 1 ACMT03 Computers 1 ACDA03 ????
mrbisto: wait please kev.
kevbee222: ok sorry
mrbisto: In order to bring that experience into play with your own job.. an example would be: imagine being called on as the sound engineer in a studio to mix a country record...
mrbisto: how would we be able to mix a country record if we had no experience of it.. it would be very difficult..
mrbisto: SO your task this week is to listen to a track and examine the sounds and production.. and create an on-going forum thread of discussion based around that listening.
mrbisto: Now I would like to open this topic up.. to you people.. so you can suggest what things you might be called on to listen for and describe.. anyone>?
elainew02474: mood?
kevbee222: vocals sound
mrbisto: ok good start.. anyone care to expand?
iheartmyjennifer: position of instruments in the mix?
kristianeliasson: position of instruments
mrbisto: sure..
kristianeliasson: depth of the instruments
iheartmyjennifer: types of effects
mrbisto: care to expand on depth?
kevbee222: are we just talking about recording country music
kristianeliasson: effects...reverb where they are
mrbisto: ken recorded music in general now. (that might have been confusing how I jump forword sorry)
kevbee222: ok
kevbee222: drum mic placement
mrbisto: good one
elainew02474: overall mix
kevbee222: a thing i do when recpoding is
kevbee222: a thing a do when recording is put a blanket over where the bass drum mic is so u dont get any sound out side the blanket
kevbee222: it sounds cool
mrbisto: sure.. ok Kev.. so one to listen for in this task...
mrbisto: to detect the drum sounds...
mrbisto: and how they may have been recorded
kevbee222: ok
jaminuk: can i also add something here
mrbisto: anyone else.. further ideas? to listen for?
mrbisto: please do ben
jaminuk: ok here are a few pointers
jaminuk: listen for;
jaminuk: 'dynamics' (i.e. levels, compression)
tobyh1000: what how the song is structured
jaminuk: 'imaging' (panning, depth)
jaminuk: 'effects' (reverb, delay etc)
jaminuk: 'frequencies' (eq etc)
kevbee222: sorry to interupt but what do u mean my depth
jaminuk: ok by depth we are talking about distance from the listener as created by, for instance, reverb or alteration of high freqs
mrbisto: Generally speaking instruments with more "top-end" will apear to have less depth in the mix.
kevbee222: ok
mrbisto: A good list of listening criteria there ben
jaminuk: you will all hopefully learn to 'hear' things such as compression, gating, reverb etc as the course progresses
mrbisto: Yes, it is that time when you start to turn into nerds.. or geeks..
jaminuk: its inevitable i'm afraid
mrbisto: ben and myself are lost..
mrbisto:
iheartmyjennifer: I hear ya
mrbisto: we get excited by a soft knee compression used on a latest release..
jaminuk: ooohhhh
jaminuk:
acousticalweaponsdivision: heh
mrbisto: or start discussion how the sound of the brushes on the snare could have be tweaked with an extra harmonic or three
mrbisto: you know, real details...
kevbee222: dont really know what ya mean there
mrbisto: which bit?
kevbee222: tweaked with an extra harmonic or 3
mrbisto: oh it's not important it was an example of how geeky we are.
jaminuk: lol
jaminuk: it will come in time
kevbee222: ha .. ic
acousticalweaponsdivision: hehe we will learn to speak geek
kevbee222: yea that might help
acousticalweaponsdivision: a whole new language for us
mrbisto: indeed
mrbisto: well we are approaching the finishing line for this session so we should get any course related questions sorted out.
iheartmyjennifer: okay
mrbisto: Is everyone clear generally what is going to happen?
iheartmyjennifer: when I signed up for the course I signed up for the City and Guilds Sound Engineering
iheartmyjennifer: does that mean I'm taking RT and MT ?
elainew02474: I have some questions, but since I'm off the bell curve should we speak after?
tobyh1000: yeah i think so
mrbisto: yes YOU are Stephen
iheartmyjennifer: I'm just a bit confused on that
iheartmyjennifer: okay that should be all my questions then
iheartmyjennifer: thank you
mrbisto: pleasure
kevbee222: kinda ... ill get there
kristianeliasson: Is there a place where you can see who is signed up for what modules?
mrbisto: yeah kev we post up these transcripts on the site so you can read over what you missed.
kevbee222: ok
mrbisto: Kristian just ask them
mrbisto: there are a couple more by the way not here this evening.
mrbisto: We also have people from another course that join us too.. so it get to be buzzing in here at times.
mrbisto: I'm sure you'll all have a giggle along the way
iheartmyjennifer: sounds like a blast
kevbee222: just 1 question . do u u give us the stuff for the week every monday
mrbisto agrees
elainew02474: Chris, where Is the main forum I should be?
kevbee222: ?
jaminuk: kev - yes
mrbisto: I'll send you that in sec elain chat with me after this.
elainew02474: ok
kevbee222: whats for the 1st week
jaminuk: 'computers 1' for MT
mrbisto: ACRT03 Music 1
ACRT03 Music 1
acousticalweaponsdivision: so, which modules are everyone doing?
acousticalweaponsdivision: i'm doing RT this time around
tobyh1000: MT for me
kristianeliasson: RT, MT and digital audio is DD correct?
iheartmyjennifer: RT MT
kevbee222: rt mt
acousticalweaponsdivision: did MT last time
kristianeliasson: Am I alone on the digital audio module?
mrbisto: DA
kristianeliasson: ok
mrbisto: yeah might be a good idea to pick the brains of acousicalweapons guys.. he's done it..
acousticalweaponsdivision: hehe pick away
iheartmyjennifer: cool will do
kristianeliasson: good to know!
tobyh1000: nice one
acousticalweaponsdivision: anyone gets stuck on MT i might be some help
kristianeliasson: great!
acousticalweaponsdivision: as i already did that module
mrbisto: while these guys chat elain shall we sort you out?
