rbro100: Hello
Rachelh-Rachel: hi all
Stephen Rodriguez: hola amigos
k: hi
Kristian Eliasson: Hi everybody!
thx1138-Alex: hello everyone
tobyh1000: bonjour people
Andrew Barber: hello everone
jaminuk has joined the conference.
Me: Grettings earthlings
jaminuk: hi all
Me: tis a fullhouse
jaminuk: a very quiet house at that!
Me: yeah they are a quiet bunch these...
rbro100: Does anyone know how to change yahoo 'knock on the door' message each time someone leaves or connects. My wife has went to the front door every time someone connects.
jaminuk: lol
jaminuk: in the options i believe
thx1138-Alex: hehe
Me: Messenger>Preferences
Stephen Rodriguez: so how was everyone's weekend?
jaminuk: file -> preferences -> alerts & sounds
Andrew Barber: busy
Stephen Rodriguez: i hear ya
tobyh1000: hectic-i'm knackered
Andrew Barber: gotta meet that deadline
Kristian Eliasson: very tough week hehe
rbro100: sat down where there was no chair!!!
Me: lol
Kristian Eliasson: haha
Me:
jaminuk: ouch
rbro100:
rbro100: sorry thought that was the blushing face
jaminuk: ha
Me:
Me: So how's was the digital audio thx1128 and rachel?
rbro100: Was out on the lifeboat this week running a training op.
Kristian Eliasson: kristian and rachel
Kristian Eliasson: well quite tough
Kristian Eliasson: question 6 ???
Rachelh-Rachel: so far it is alright
Me: Looks good so far...
Me: comprehensive..
Kristian Eliasson: how about question nr 6 CD to DAT
Me: I'll check it and post some response this week.
Kristian Eliasson: my hair went gray....hehe
Me: lol
Me: Will get to round things up with feedback ths week, don't go grey.
Kristian Eliasson: haha
Me: wouldn't suit you...
Me: Looks on target anyway...
Me: Ben, did you get a good batch of replies?
jaminuk: ok i wanted to bring something up here.
jaminuk: from this weeks answers it is very clear that there is a lot of cutting and pasting going on - many people even cutting and pasting from the same site
jaminuk: this is not good practice
jaminuk: by all means use every resource available, internet sites included, but please attempt to answer the questions in your own words as this will help you absorb and retain the information
jaminuk: standard cutting and pasting will not help you remember the information - come the exam you will struggle
jaminuk: would you agree with that chris?
Me: Oh I do agree firmly with that, I'd also go further and start to reject answers that are blatent plagarised examples (stolen)
Me: It is academically the worst possible thing to do.
Me: That aside, to reinforce your point, ben, yes the information will simply NOT be retained in any way unless constructed by yourself... (yourself being those who cut n paste) - you know who you are.
Kristian Eliasson: Ben is there any book(s) for the MT that you would recommend? Like The Art of digital audio for the DA.
jaminuk: yes, 'sound and recording: an introduction' is a good starting point
jaminuk: however....
jaminuk: as the MT syllabus is so wide there is not, at least to my knowledge, a book that adequately covers all bases
jaminuk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/024051680X/qid=1127074798/sr=8-8/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i8_xgl/026-4593966-6228450
jaminuk: synthesis (next 2 weeks) is a massive discipline in itself
thx1138-Alex: i bought that one, it was fairly helpful
rbro100: http://www.tonmeister.ca/miva/merchant.mvc --- ebook version
jaminuk: synth secrets, from SOS magazine is a good resource for that
Kristian Eliasson: ok
Andrew Barber: do you have to pay for an ebook?
rbro100: yes
Me: Moving on... there will be a practical for RT this week.
Me: I want to hear some audio work from you all.. (DA included)
Me: You are to rwrite a song, record it, mix it, master it, and have it in the shops by Friday..
jaminuk: easy
Kristian Eliasson:
rbro100: Don't have many shops up here
Me: hehe actually I jest, BUT....
Stephen Rodriguez: woo hoo!!!!!
Kristian Eliasson: not here either...
Stephen Rodriguez: man that sounds fun
Me: It's not that far fetched to be honest.. what with virtual shops being so wide-spread.
Me: But i think it would probably make more sense to break that down to some smaller tasks..
Andrew Barber has joined the conference.
Andrew Barber: back again
jaminuk:
Me: So we will have a stereo sound file... which will require some editing..
Me: What I'm interested in here is two things...
Me: 1. Vocal recording.
Me: 2. editing
Me: Does anyone NOT have a microphone?
Stephen Rodriguez: got one
rbro100: I've got one
k: yea
Me: seems everyone has a mic, as nobody answered "me"..
Me: good...
Me: Now microphones (as most of us know) come in heaps of flavours..
Me: The mic you choose is to be for speech
k: con
Me: otherwise known as a voice-over
Stephen Rodriguez: AT 3035 okay?
Me: the voice-over will take the form of an enthusiastic voice-over bubbling about a new radio show.
Me: This means we all get to hear your voices...(a good ice-breaker)
Me: plus we get to focus in on good voice recording technique.
Stephen Rodriguez: nice
Me: The voice will be layered over some classical music... (supplied by us)
k: so wee have to talk
k: ?
Me: yes, you have to talk in a manner which would label this excerise as a radio jingle, or an advertisment for a radio show...
Me: The skills put to test are editing the music down to a predefined length.... utlisiing sections which are "well known" and would be considered suitable for "selling" the show.
Me: along with the voice recording itself.
Me: and the mixing of those two sources.
Me: This task would now probably start you all thinking and possibly open the floor for discussion.. ?
rbro100: What the piece?
rbro100: whats
Me: Will probably be some Mozart..
thx1138-Alex: nice
thx1138-Alex: cant beat a bit of Mozart
Me: Mozart is a very "popular" choice for people that would be interested in such a commercial approach to selling a station this way, don't you think?
Me: no one? lol
rbro100: depends on the piece
Me: go on ...
Me: can you expand on that?
Andrew Barber: p i e c e
rbro100: he was brilliant, but a lot of his music has been, for lack of a better word, overdone
thx1138-Alex: his music is quite well known so most people will have heard at least some of his music even if they dont know it's Mozart
Me: ah good alex
Stephen Rodriguez: I say it's time for a new prodigy tocome along
rbro100: but the people who would listen to a show like this would prob already know mozart's work
Me: anyone else?
jaminuk: if it was a commercial station wouldn't it make sense to make the demographic as large as possible guys?
Kristian Eliasson: well probably its not ment for people who likes conteporary classical music
Me: large demographic, now hat's good.. is everyone agreeing with that?
thx1138-Alex: yep
k: whats demographic
Me: glad you asked K....
Me:
Me: ben, would you mind.
jaminuk: ok in laymans terms what we are talking about here is the 'target audience'
jaminuk: being a commercial station (so therefore probably FM) it will make sense to have as large a listener base as possible
jaminuk: so therefore 'commercial' classical composers like mozart, bach, handel etc
jaminuk: would be used to reel in people
jaminuk: maybe people who don't know much about classical but want to get on the 'first rung' of the ladder so to speak
Kristian Eliasson: mozart is a symbol for classical music...classical in a popular sense. Weel known for a broad audience. You dont use, Alban Berg or Anton Webern for a commercial classical channel
jaminuk: absolutely kris
Kristian Eliasson:
jaminuk: so what you need to think about here are 'hooks'
Me: good stuff...
jaminuk: pieces of music to grab peoples attention
Me: go on Ben
jaminuk: obviously classical isn't structured like pop in that it is instrumental and doesn't really have verse/chorus/middle 8 etc
jaminuk: so how do you think you mihgt structure such a montage
jaminuk: ?
rbro100: montage?
Me: ooh this is good.
Me: learning so much new stuff
jaminuk: in art a montage is a piece made up of several smaller pieces etc
Stephen Rodriguez: Well since the artist is so well known you might want to tkae a portion ofthe song that the listeners are so accustomed to. For example, Fur Elise at the beginning is fairly recognizable.
thx1138-Alex: loop an instantly recognizable part maybe
Kristian Eliasson: well here you have to take out a well known theme I suppose
jaminuk: this is getting better
Andrew Barber has joined the conference.
thx1138-Alex: make sure you have a drop in volume when you do a voice over
jaminuk: good AWD
Andrew Barber: back again (modem probs)
Kristian Eliasson: ducking?
thx1138-Alex: damn cant remember what that's called
thx1138-Alex: aha thats the one!!
jaminuk: wahey - we're into the realms of ducking!
jaminuk: damn s & d are close on the keyboard
Me: ohhhh im happy
thx1138-Alex: dont some noise gates do it automatically? ducking that is
Me: eveyone know what ducking is, or more to the point why it is useful?
thx1138-Alex: or a set level of ducking on a mixer whenever a radio DJ speaks through the mic
Kristian Eliasson: yes
Kristian Eliasson: more or less
Andrew Barber: yep
tobyh1000: yeah
Me: Basically we can think of duckin as auto fader movement..
Me: Essentially lowering the music signal to allow space for a vocal.
Me: Getting back to this practical task....
Me: There will be a time limit on the length of audio file....
Me: ben what would you see fitting here?
k has left the conference.
jaminuk: well i think that with commercial radio between 20-40 secs would be suitable for a full length 'trailer'
Me: Good.. and the format for delivery should be MP3....
jaminuk: stereo mp3 at 192kbps i think should do it
Me: There we have it folks... is that clear?
Stephen Rodriguez: will this be posted on the forums?
Me: the task will be yes...
Stephen Rodriguez: sounds goo
Stephen Rodriguez: good*
Me: any questions regarding this?
Stephen Rodriguez: nope
Kristian Eliasson: do you come up with the text or do we?
Me: the text is to be written by yourself.
Andrew Barber: cool
Kristian Eliasson: cool
Me: Where would be a good place to start for this?
thx1138-Alex: listen to some existing adverts on a classical station
Kristian Eliasson: deciding the audience....who should listen?
Me: good!!!
Me: listening to how it is done already is a great idea..
Me: good stuff
jaminuk: yes this is important
Me: This should help you formulate your ideas..
jaminuk: pay attention to the way the tracks segue into each other
Me: What software you guys gonna use for this then?
jaminuk: and also the way the vocal is treated
Stephen Rodriguez: Adobe Audition 1.5
Andrew Barber: wavelab 5
Kristian Eliasson: Cubase SX3.1
rbro100: Garageband or pro tools
tobyh1000: cubase sx3
jaminuk: these are all good as they all have multi-track capabilities
jaminuk: you'll really want to concentrate on x-fades between the tracks and the overall timing and rhythm of the advertisement
Stephen Rodriguez: x fades?
jaminuk: x fades = cross fades
jaminuk: just shorthand
Stephen Rodriguez: ahh
jaminuk: do you think that for this type of advert the x-fades should be long or short?
Stephen Rodriguez: short?
tobyh1000: short?
Stephen Rodriguez: i hear ya tob
Kristian Eliasson: quite long you have to live in the classical world
Andrew Barber: ?
jaminuk: ok some conflicting opinions here
jaminuk: why short?
jaminuk: anyone
Stephen Rodriguez: hmm...
tobyh1000: the ad's only 20-40 secs long overall
jaminuk: good
thx1138-Alex: less noticeable that one part is fading into another
jaminuk: kris - why long?
Kristian Eliasson: well for me long was only some seconds...
Kristian Eliasson: so you can feel different themes like there is a lot of calssical music coming up
Kristian Eliasson: classical
jaminuk: good also
jaminuk: i don't know exactly what pieces chris will give you
jaminuk: but i'd start off looking at x-fade times of about 1.5 secs and then working either backward or forward from that
jaminuk: some pieces may have natural pauses or breaks that can be utilised also
jaminuk: however flow will be important
jaminuk: but back to software
jaminuk: aside from the editing of the audio files, what other processing may be used
jaminuk: ?
rbro100: effects?
tobyh1000: effects
Stephen Rodriguez: effects on the voice
Kristian Eliasson: compressor on the voice,
Stephen Rodriguez: chances are the classical music will already have some
jaminuk: what kind of effects on the voice do you think would be suitable for classical??
jaminuk: kris - good
Andrew Barber: EQ?
jaminuk: quickly - can we differentiate between effects and processors?
jaminuk: or rather can any of you tell me the difference?
jaminuk: what do you think reverb is?
Stephen Rodriguez: effects are like delay and stuff like that and processors are your EQ's, compressors
Kristian Eliasson: Process to enhance sound...effects to change sound?
jaminuk: iheart...: good - how could you differentiate technically
tobyh1000: reverb - effect
jaminuk: ?
Stephen Rodriguez: one processes the sound that's given to it by modifiying how ears can hear it. The other adds to the sound things that weren't there before
Me: fingers on the buzzers people, let's be having you.
jaminuk: getting closer
jaminuk: ok clue here - aux sends and insert points
Kristian Eliasson: insert process...effect send normally
Stephen Rodriguez: what am I missing
Stephen Rodriguez:
jaminuk: good kris
jaminuk: right you can think of it like this
jaminuk: we'd nearly always access a processor through an insert point
jaminuk: an insert point sends the entire signal to the processor and then returns it post processing
Stephen Rodriguez: OHHH!!! i get it now
jaminuk: with effects such as reverb we use an aux to send some signal to an fx unit and then blend in a certain amount with the 'dry' signal
jaminuk: so compressors, gates, limiters, eq, deessers etc are processors
jaminuk: reverb, delay, phase/flange, chorus etc are effects
jaminuk: so with a voice over for a classical radio station we are probably more concerned with processing than effects (although this is down to your discrection ultimately)
jaminuk: a slapback delay with some flanging probably wouldn't sound great over a piece from peer gynt
Me: lol
Kristian Eliasson: hehe
jaminuk: so you need to listen to some FM style voiceovers on a classical station and try to identify the sonic 'fingerprint'
jaminuk: i.e. eq, compression, limiting etc
jaminuk: this would be a great starting place
Me: All quiet again?
Me: eveyone shell shocked?
jaminuk: hehe
Stephen Rodriguez: not really
Stephen Rodriguez: it actaully sounds a lot of fun
thx1138-Alex: there really ought to be a tumbleweed emoticon on yahoo messenger
Stephen Rodriguez: I'm game!!!!
Stephen Rodriguez: i knowright?
Stephen Rodriguez: man that'd be nifty
Me:
Me: lol
Me: yeah it would.
Stephen Rodriguez: so...
Stephen Rodriguez: how's cricket going?
Me: so that's that...
Me: Cricket is done and dusted... england won.
rbro100: don't start them off again
Stephen Rodriguez: yay hooray for ENGLAND!!!!
Me:
rbro100:
Stephen Rodriguez: alrighty everyone well if there isn't anything else then I must be going
Stephen Rodriguez: I have to upgrade my sound card
Me: yeah?
Me: to what?
Stephen Rodriguez: yep
Kristian Eliasson: I have a question though round stereo ducking though sorry to interrupt
Stephen Rodriguez: creative X-Fi platinum
Kristian Eliasson:

Me: neat let us know how it goes with an audio blog?
Stephen Rodriguez: alrighty

Me: would be a treat for us to hear somebody... on this course.
Stephen Rodriguez: I live in the U.S. so i need to buy a phone card
Stephen Rodriguez: but will do
Me: it's free by the way for US

Me: free calls
Me: yes
Stephen Rodriguez: oh well then i'll be doing it
Stephen Rodriguez: I thought it was gonna cost me
Stephen Rodriguez: no problem thenm
Me: nah
Kristian Eliasson: free from Barbados to????
Me: I think so... the service is free for all.. if it is from another country to USA international fee might apply, which is small.
Kristian Eliasson: well hehe not from here....is it the same in Trinidad Rachel???
Rachelh-Rachel: never did it before
Rachelh-Rachel: dunno
Kristian Eliasson: Well I must try it anyway
Stephen Rodriguez: hey mt login keeps failing
Me: yeah sure give it a go... it's great.. the audio file appears on the site as an mp3 quicker then you can patch a bantam jack in
Kristian Eliasson: so I can actually download myself and incorporate in my music?
Kristian Eliasson:
Me: if you wanted to
Me: once it is posted, right click and save as..
Kristian Eliasson: cool
Me: you get 5 mins for the recording.
Me: each time..
Stephen Rodriguez: the pin isn't working
Me: it isnt?
Stephen Rodriguez: I just tried and it keeps saying that my login is failing
Kristian Eliasson: well I better watch out so my voice doesnt end up on a disco somewhere...
Stephen Rodriguez: I put 3158 #
