Making it as an artist/band  Reply with quote

Any ideas to promote an artist/band with a minimum investment? How do you get the music to reach out to people?

I think he was looking for a discussion about the subject, so we can get our teeth into it here in the forum.

Yes.

I'm not looking for people who can do it for me (I could have used the phone directory or google search instead!!). Basically I'm looking for ideas...getting creative...

The net looks like a good option. In what ways can we stretch it to fit our gains?

I think you got the wrong end of the stick there...

Links are fine, just look to input some discussion.

You have some experience in this area?

Looking for a discussion  Reply with quote

Sorry Jerseyboy if I hit the wrong chord. As audiocourses posted I was just looking for a discussion. Those lines were not meant for you. Links are fine. I was simply looking at expanding on the topic in the forums, thats all..

Yeah, do you have any experience promoting artists or have you used F.Y.E retail placement? Are you an artist yourself?

Getting known out there  Reply with quote

Hello all

There are a few factors in the equation on how to get your name out there.
1. you need to have a good cd with your music on it.Hopefully it was engineered and produced properly.
2.Be prepared to travel and put alot of hard work into it.You and the band will have to wear many hats.you may have to carry your gear, set it up and tear down ect...
3.hopefully you would be selling your cd,s at the concerts.
4.get a good manager (there is a post in this forum on some qualities to look for
5.Some may want to get a label to pick them up but for this to happen you'll probably have to have 6 months of bookings ahead to show them you have work.
6.If your going indie, have your cd.s displayed in mom and pop record shops and keep on top of the inventory.
7.Hit every college and university campus radio with a free cd demo of the songs you may want heard.
8.Hit some of the national radio stations like BBC radio in UK or CBC radio in Canada they play a lot of homegrown cd's
9.Some artists have to deal with geography .Where there is dense population you can try booking with cafes, bars, clubs from city to city.
as an example where I'm from Canada is a very large area.If you keep to the north the towns and citie are very few.In the south however is a different story .You have large cities and some are very close to the American border. In many cases if you want to make it big here You definetaly have to move south if you want work every day.Once you make it big in these southern cities then you can arrange a cross country tour to hit the northern cities.

These are a few pointers which I learned from others.
There are many books out there on the business which one can read.
There are other factors involved if you want to make it big especially in the Canadian and American markets.
Sometimes Appearance has some benifits to it.
I know there should be some discussion on this one!

you have to be young, sexy, good looking, your body in shape, have talent, ect....

Till then

have a good day.

It's not just a link.....  Reply with quote

This is Ken from Stretch the Skies. I stumbled across this forum yesterday and wanted to try to clear up any confusion about STS. The link that was posted in this forum directs you to F.Y.E., For Your Entertainment. This is one of many chains owned by the largest music retailer(conventional) in the U.S.. We have been assigned to use our technology, "the music button", to sell and track indies on-line for referral back to retail.

Mike makes many good points below, but, there are many more to adapt as well. We are trying to teach artists what really matters in this business, like reporting ALL sales, even at your shows, and making sure you are registered if you plan on any radio play at all.

In an industry where the keys have been held for so long, by so few, there are now ways to market yourself to the world and not get screwed in the process!

Our company is all about communication. Feel free to stop by or check us out.
