Week 5 - Synthesis 2 - Practical  Reply with quote

This week we can have a look at creating some sounds with subtractive synthesis.

There is a free VST instrument called 'Neutron'* which is in the 'benm' folder of the UPLOAD STATION.

Inside the .zip file is the .dll file which you simply copy to your VST Plugins folder (usually this is c:/steinberg/vstplugins)
**Note this plug-in is PC only!**

Once this is loaded you can access the Neutron as a VSTi.

Neutron offers 2 VCOs as well as a noise generator. Obviously we also have VCA, VCF and 2xLFO.

What I'd like you to attempt this week is to recreate the sounds of some acoustic instruments.

I'd like to start with these;

Kick Drum
Snare Drum
Hi Hat
Flute
Piano

What is vital is that you must consider the ADSR envelopes as well as the most suitable sound source (sine, noise, saw etc)

Lets try to get some dialogue going in this thread also.

Rachel, I am aware you will have attempted this last time - I'm happy for you either to have another attempt at the above instruments or to try to emulate any other instruments. I will leave this up to you.

Russ - I'll post another post with details for Mac.

*Neutron was created by B. Serrano and is also available from the following link as well as many other free VST instruments; http://bserrano.free.fr/VST.htm

As Neutron is not available on a Mac then the only free alternative I've found (as it has a noise generator) is daHornet. It is however lacking in VCO options as well as lacking 'release' on the envelope generators Sad

If there was a way you could use Neutron on a PC it would be much preferable but if not then you can get daHornet from here;

Sound source  Reply with quote

Hi!

How should one think to decide which sound source to use for different instruments (sine, saw, noise etc.)?
Has anybody found a good internet site for this?
