In todays seminar we looked at Heavy Metal our task was to research "Metallica".

Chris went through key time periods during heavy metal e.g. 1970's 80's and 90's.

Cool

Formed in 1981 when Lars Ulrich, the drummer, put an ad in the local paper about forming a band. He met James Hetfield (lead singer, songwriter, rhythm guitar.

The early band line-up changed frequently, with early lead guitarist Dave Mustaine eventually leaving to form the band Megadeth. He was replaced by Kirk Hammet
They had moderate success with their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning. In 1986 they released Master Of Puppets, an album considered by many to be one of the greatest ever heavy metal albums.

Whilst touring the new album in Europe, bassist Cliff Burton was involved in tour bus accident and died in Sweden.

The first album with new bassist James Newsted was "..and justice for all", one of metallica's most complex albums. Though the bass in this album was turned down to an undetectable level. The band rarely play songs from this album because of the complex structures, however this album contained one of Metallica's greates hits, One. One's video was played heavily on MTV and gained the band alot of additional exposure.

In the 90's Metallica attempted to make their albums more commercially viable, this was first done with The Black Album which was produced by Bob Rock (also produced Bon Jovi), the band then toured for nearly 3 years. After a break, the band came back with 4 more albums in the late 90's which had an ever decreasing metal sound. Load, reload, Garage Inc and S&M.

Metallica were the first major band to try and sue Napster, a move that went on to become a PR nightmare.

In 2003, Newsted left and was eventually replaced by Rob Trujillo (ex-suicidal tendancies bassist)
The band then recorded St Anger, an album which was far rougher and aggressive than their recent albums.
