Andrew Barber: hello all
jaminuk: hi andy
Andrew Barber: hi ben
Rachelh-Rachel has joined the conference.
Me: evenin all...
Andrew Barber: am sampled out to the max
jaminuk: ha
Me: ahh time to unplug from the keyzone sample matrix.. it's sunday evening.
Me: been keeping yourself busy Andrew?
Andrew Barber: yes..
Andrew Barber: very busy
Andrew Barber: been runnin round house with mic and MD player
Andrew Barber: /recorder
Me: oh sounds like a school project.
Stephen Rodriguez: brb
Andrew Barber: yep, but i cant hand it in??
jaminuk: you been recording for the sound fx story?
Andrew Barber: yep..
Andrew Barber: used some online libraries too
jaminuk: get some good foley sounds?
Andrew Barber: got few good ones
jaminuk: its good fun sound fx creation
Andrew Barber: forgot to record room tones, doh
jaminuk: you can make lots of odd noises by slowing samples down and reversing them too
jaminuk: room tones?
Me: Yeah slowing things down is great fun!
Kristian Eliasson: is there a new password to the FTP or is it just down....?
Andrew Barber: ambience?
jaminuk: lot of the old bbc sound fx for sci-fi and the like were done in this kind of style
Me: ohhh forgot about that, probably a new FTP, let me go set it up, (we have a new server config) brb
jaminuk: you planning on doing some convolution reverb?
Andrew Barber:
Kristian Eliasson: wow the forum is up now also!!!
jaminuk: you 'model' spaces (i.e. your living room) and you can use them as reverb settings in software
Andrew Barber: sounds cool
Andrew Barber: do you have to measure the room or something?
jaminuk: yeah, people can model whatever they want - someone did a model of inside a renault van and when you used it, it sounded really realistic
jaminuk: if you wanted something to sound like it was in a renault van that is
Andrew Barber: any free plugins on the conv verb
jaminuk: yeah a few
jaminuk: give me a sec
jaminuk: http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html
thx1138-Alex has joined the conference.
thx1138-Alex: hello!
jaminuk: then you can download different 'spaces' from here
Kristian Eliasson: Hi there there you are!
jaminuk: http://www.noisevault.com/
thx1138-Alex: i live still
jaminuk: hi awd
thx1138-Alex: evenin'
thx1138-Alex: what we talking about?
Stephen Rodriguez: back
Andrew Barber: convolution reverb
jaminuk: e were just discussing convolution reverb
Kristian Eliasson: nothing yet ...the FTP works now....its just to upload
Andrew Barber: looks quite tricky
jaminuk: its not too difficult - creating your own impulses does really require a good mic and speaker but you can certainly download some very very good sounding presets for free
Kristian Eliasson: Andy whats tricky?
Andrew Barber: Ben's web page
Andrew Barber: just posted...

Kristian Eliasson: Hi hope this works better!
thx1138-Alex has left the conference.
Me: sorry about that people, t'internet is a little odd this evening.. where were we?
jaminuk: hi rachel and kris
Kristian Eliasson: oh hi finally we are here !
Me: I remember the old days of "net storms" and "floods"...
jaminuk: oh god the IRC days
jaminuk: network splits etc
Me: hehe those tedious days yes..
Me: so we were talking of convolution reverbs...
Me: in connection with sound FX stories?
jaminuk: yeah we touched on conv reverb and andy was talking about recording foley sound
Me: was it a useful excersise Andy?
Andrew Barber: thought id give it a bash
Andrew Barber: and twas very useful
Me: it can be interesting, the differing types of sound there are in the house.
Stephen Rodriguez has left the conference.
Stephen Rodriguez has joined the conference.
Me: wooden spoon on an opened up water melon, for example.
Stephen Rodriguez has joined the conference.
Kristian Eliasson: I have 20 min recording of the washing machine...will use it one day....nice beat...hehe
Andrew Barber: lol
jaminuk: if you slap some meat(!) on a wooden surface you get a good 'punch' sound a la the a-team
Stephen Rodriguez: are we talking about foley artists here?
Me: easy ben, sounds a bit saucy
Kristian Eliasson: sounds bloody
jaminuk: ha
thx1138-Alex: i've used recordings of the boiler for my central heating before
Me: after dark activity that one.
Me: Good idea for keeping the heating bills down, play a sample of it running and fool the house mates.
thx1138-Alex: hehe i'd not thought of that
jaminuk: hahaha
thx1138-Alex: good thinking batman
Me: thanks robin
Andrew Barber: shouldnt that be throbin?
Me: something i'm missing andy?
jaminuk: ha
Me: oh doh, i get it (finally)
Me: Ben mentioned slowing samples down, earlier.. anyone experimented with that as a technique?
Stephen Rodriguez: I"ve done it with voices not neccessarily with samples
thx1138-Alex: yes, done a fair bit of stuff with slowed down samples
Me: It stuck me as topical I was only doing this today myself, as a matter of fact. .
Me: I loaded "master blaster" ala Stevie Wonder, into Wavelab...
Me: and entered a sonic foundy (off the shelf) pitch changer into the rack..
Me: dialed it down -5 semitones..
Me: and it brings out some great nuances that are lost a little in the normal version.
Me: Especially vocal vibrato, slides bends... etc...
Me: It's also a great technique for working out some of the more intricate harmonies that might be present...
thx1138-Alex: i like layering a voice sample at several different pitches
Me: yeah?
thx1138-Alex: yeah, i did something with a recording of me reading out some text
thx1138-Alex: than ran the same sample at -6, -12 and -24 semitones
Me: so you used a pitch shifter, not necessarily a harmoniser.
thx1138-Alex: yeah a pitch shifter
Me: I image that sounded "dark"
Me: imagine
jaminuk: yeah 6 semitones would give you a b5 I think
Me: yup
thx1138-Alex: it did indeed, plus i added a large amount of reverb on the -12 and -24 pitched samples
Me: Gb if in C
Me: yeah you'd be getting some awesome "other word" voices for a horror sound travk!
Me: Which brings me on to another practical..... very related.
thx1138-Alex: hehe well it definitely suited the text i read out
Me: I thought we might have a go at added sound to a movie file this week.... _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.
