I looking for a basic "rule by thumb"/ beginners guide to voice compression. Can anybody advise on any book, magazine or website that can help in any way. I dealt with compressors very slightly at college many moons ago, but cannot for the life of me remember. I had some Sabine radio mics installed at my work, but the instructions are very limited and my experiments are not very productive.
any help would be grateful

No rules
Hi.
It doesn't really work like that for a few reasons.
1. all vocalists need different settings
2. not all vocalists sing at the same levels nor have the same dynamic range
3. depends on the type of effect you are mixing for
With this in mind rule of thumbs don't really exist, what are you having trouble with?
However, this
Audio compression e-book
will explain how the controls work. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.
