I need some opinions here..
For a small scale music production setup with a Pro Tools HD setup, would it be a good idea to use a DigiPre along with other high quality pre amps? I'm looking at having atleast 16 inputs into Pro Tools.
Would it be worth investing in a DigiPre or would it better if I pumped in a bit more money and bought something else with greater specs and sound?
I'm looking at these pre-amps currently, havent decided on them yet:

Well a few options there, personally I like the Focusrite from that list, I can't comment on the others having not heard them, which is basically the bottom line for me. Focusrite do sound good though. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

Id take a look at TL Audio to put on that list.
Also dont rule out the second hand market, you might pick up a nice valve job or a Focusrite Red Series or something if you keep your eyes open _________________ If In Doubt...Hit It With a Hammer, If Still In Doubt... Find a Bigger Hammer. |

Any suggestions for outboard compressors and EQs?
I'm thinking of using analogue compressors and eqs and using digital plugins for reverbs, delays and other effects.. |

Umm...I'm actually working on a studio design project - so really this is all just on paper (though I wish it was all for real!). For the whole studio I have around $100,000..
I'm not investing in a console : going for a control surface and most probably PT HD2 with outboard preamps, AD/DAs, compressors and EQs...
What I'm looking for is extremely high quality clean signals in a 16 I/O music production studio..
I'm also trying to decide between a Logic setup (with the new Apogee Symphony) and a Pro Tools HD setup..
Back to the outboard compressors and EQs - anything in the price range of $900-$2000 |

Hi, conquistadore, what style of music are you going to be recording most and what type of mics are you now using? This information will help determine some recommendations.
How did you come to picking those particular pres and converter?
A couple of great all purpose preamps IMHO are the Great Rivers MP-2NV and the Broadhurst Dav Electronics 8 channel pre. The MP adds as much or as little color as you dial in and the Dav is clean and everything that comes out of it sounds polished and ready for sale. As well, they will work great with ribbon and dynamic microphones like the 441 that require a lot of gain. Two very different sounding pre's, but both amazing-!! |
