Many Cubase users are unaware that they can perform sidechaining in the VST environment. These tutorial will look at simple ways of achieving this with a gate and compressor.

hey im fairly new to cubase and having the following problems;
when i do the ducking i get the bassline to duck but the kick gets compressed too and sounds too clicky
with the rhythmic gating i keep having to adjust the gate according to the hat sequence and its hard to get it to gate nicely (open and close cleanly- if thats the way to put it)
any help will help  |

you shouldn't be hearing any compression on the kick drum - this sounds like you have your panning set incorrectly as the kick drum should be inaudible through the group track so that the compressor looks at one side for trigger and other for program material.
for the gating you may find that it is good to make a copy of the hat track, compress it heavily so that the dynamic range is reduced and then send this to trigger the gate so that hopefully you can just set your threshold and forget about it. |

Can this method be used with Cubase SX 1 or does it have to be SX 2 or 3? I have the original Cubase SX and it doesn't appear that a group channel can be stereo so that you can pan the bassline back to the center. |

hmm, i can't remember although to be honest I'd be surprised if the group channels in SX1 are mono only.
can you change the fader with a right click on the pan control on the group channel? |

Negative, the fader doesn't change. When I create a group channel there isn't a choice of stereo or mono either. |
