I have heard about ear trainning but how important is it to learn when producing? I am guessing its probably a good thing to pick up on...If so can anyone point me in the dirrection of where to start with it? Comments are appreciated! |

There are a few softwares around that wil help you 'ear train'. But a good exercise, especially if you are looking at producing or engineering, is to pick up songs and analyse them. Analyse the music (chord progressions, beat, etc..), the effects used during mixdown (reverb, delays, phasers maybe even compression), the placement of sounds on the sound stage, the levels of each sound relative to others...
After a while you will end having a bank of ideas, which will help you during your production.
