How do I minimize sound so neighbors don't call cops again?  Reply with quote

Hi. We have a band and we practice in our house basement 2x a week. The basement is basically like an unfiinished cellar, a brick foundation and cement flor. We have done some very cheap soundproofing --- cheap carpeting from the Home Depot hung loosely 1 inch from the foundation walls, we also put insulation and ceiling tiles over the well windows, and taped inulation on the ceiling. There is still a lot of sound coming out of the foundation wall. What can we do for the least amount of money possible to minimize the sound as much as possible so the neighbors wont be able to hear, or at least be a nuisance that they would want to call the cops. Sad We got a visit from them about 2 months ago. Our houses are only about 25 feet apart from each other. Thanks.

turn down  Reply with quote

have you considered turning it down?

also try damping the drums and get practice pads perhaps

also it might help to stuff loft insulation or some such material behind the carpet u hung on the walls.

A single carpet will hardly give you any isolation. Remember: Greater the mass, greater the isolation.
Since its your neighbours in question and not the people in the same building, concentrate more on the walls than the ceiling.
How much are you ready to spend?

hello!
well this problem is all too common. Carpeting wouldn't really do. I've tried it with my band which practices in a garage. It hardly helps. What you could do is fill sacks with mud and stack them up horizontally over each other all thw way up to the windows. the only problem is it could cut out ventilation. If you have an air con or even a fan down there then it's fine or just be prepared to practice in a relatively stuffy room. But the method i've told you does work wonders (atleast in my band's case) though you get a slight low frequency leakage outside and at 25 feet it isn't really audible....even if it is it's not the disturbing sorta sound that will have your neighbours dialing for the cops again. Try it and let me know if it works. Best of luck! Very Happy

Interesting.. Yes this should help. Because in some studio designs they actually use dried sand to achieve isolation - more mass, less sound.
