How to record or adjust midi drum samples?  Reply with quote

First, I'm an absolute a newbie for Cubase or any other musical recording softwares. I've been fiddling about in Cubase and have managed to record my voice and guitar in audo track thru microphone socket in back of pc ( I only have intergrated sound in my pc which mean without a sound card. Rolling Eyes

I've downloaded some free midi samples of drums from internet( in midi files of course )

Now the question is : Will I be able to play midi files (drum samples) that I've downloaded from internet in Cubase ? and be able to record and control the speed of the drum midi files?

I'll really appreciate if this can work and with step by step tutorials of how. And hope this thread will help others who are having the same problem as I have
thanx in advance Very Happy

Yes this is possible.

MIDI files automatically play back at the speed of your project as set in the transport bar in Cubase (default 120bpm)

MIDI files themself carry no audio information however - they must trigger sounds from a sound source such as a drum machine or sampler. Cubase has a free VSTi drum machine included called LM-7 (or it may be LM-9, I can't remember)

You would import the MIDI drum part into a MIDI channel in Cubase, load up LM-7 as a Virtual Instrument and then set the output of the drums MIDI channel to LM-7.

Once you get your head around this you wil probably want to investigate a drum sampler such as Native Instruments Battery (or anything listed here - http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=results&st=adv&soft=i&type%5B%5D=3&f=vstnse&fe=0&win=1&free=1&com=1&un=1&sf=0&receptor=&sort=1&rpp=30)
- this allows you much more flexibility with your drum sounds.

Well you certainly won't be able to play MIDI files downloaded from the net on Cubase just like that. Remember, MIDI is just a form of messages. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH AUDIO.
As far as your question goes, you'll have to open your MIDI files in a cubase and assign it the LM - 7 drum machine to get your sound. The MIDI messages at the appropriate places will trigger the approprite sound.
That's about it!
