Can some one give me some advice?
I'm looking for a laptop to use for recording. Unfortunalty I haven't got the funds or space to dedicate it solely to this pupose, and it would have to run basic microsoft office,(I'm used to PC's, I'd like to stick with them) as well as support the internet, which I know is not ideal.
I'm not great with compter stuff, so I'm lloking for someone to point me in the right direction. I could learn to do various bits, and I have some suitably techie friends to aid me, but really I want something that I can get running acceptably after doing not much more than changing the sound card. I could always do more at a later date.
It needs to be a laptop because I'm going to need to be portable, there isn't anywhere in my house suitable for 3+ people to be recorded at once.
I've got between £900-£1500 for laptop, soundcard, and separate monitor(cos I really can't stand laptop ones all the time). If I can get something decent towards the bottom of thatband it woudl be good, as other wise I will start dipping into other savings- the new electric guitar fund, the unversity savings etc
Could you also suggest some good soundcards- I have some plans for live recording which would include recoring drum kit. I don't know much about soundcards at all yet, so anything which explains more youl be helpful.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply |

Im not a genious but i can give you my opinion. i would really try to figur out a way to my things work with a pc instead of a laptop. if you are doin recordings maybe you could have people come record one track at a time and then mix all the tracks down. It would be alot more difficult but if jus might benefit u in the end. But if u must get a laptop get something with an AMD proccessor and a good sized hard disk. |

Not only a good sized hard disk but a fast one! But of course, that depends on your budget.. Don't go for anything less than a SATA, but most PCs are sold with SATA hard drives nowadays anyway..
Another thing you will need is good processing power and as much RAM as you can fit in with your budget. In the media world there never is enough RAM..
If you can try getting yourself a desktop, you will need as much processing power as possible and all the money you save from not buying a laptop can be diverted towards good hardware. But if you really do need a portable setup thena laptop it is..
Soundcards: You will obviously need a firewire/usb sound card. You can't run around with a PCI chasis! Something like M-Audio should do (
www.m-audio.com
) for your budget, or maybe try Presonus (though I'm not sure if they have much in your range). Buying M-Audio would give you an option to run Pro Tools M-Powered..
With your budget the sound card is not going to have more than two mic preamps, so that would mean you can't stick a microphone on every piece of your drumkit..
And what about speakers? What are you going to monitor your sound with? Heapdones?
Run a forum search, there have been loads of posts similar to your before and I'm sure you'll find some more help there.. |
