| Firewire hubs - how do they work? |

I use the m-audio project mix which is a firewire connection. Now i 'believe' it will run through a powered hub, but i want to know how much of the bandwidth it actually would use.
Say i run the project mix along side an external DVD player and hard drive (using firewire ofc). I was just wondering as getting a hub would be alot handier! At the moment i only have one firewire port and thinking of getting an external firewire drive for audio storage.
So how does a hub work? Does it spilt the bandwidth equally or does it split to each device depending on its usage? So for example if the project mix, hard drive and dvd player are connected. The dvd player is doing nothing but is connected; i am runnign pro tools, recording some tracks to the external drive.. Would it all collapse miserably?? How much bandwidth does the project mix acutally use? is there a tool out there that can measure bandwidth on firewire ports?

Firewire can handle enough and probably a lot more bandwidth than

You shouldn`t be worried about collapsing or dropping because of the firewire.
Keep your system clean and defragmented, kill the non esential processes.
Check the web for optimal system settings and windows tweaks. |

I would keep the more important firewire devices (your recording/playback HD, sound interface) on a seperate firewire bus if I could.. But it also depends on your usage of all your firewire devices (are they going to be used at the same time..etc..etc.. |

hey thanks for the replies! No one had got back to me for ages so i just went and got one and see what would happen.
I would ideally like to use the project mix and drive on seperate firewire buses but atm i am currently using my powerbook which only has one firewire port, and there is no way of increasing this, as it is a laptop.
I have been running it with the cd drive through the hub and it works fine. I have not purchased an external drive just yet. See what i was thinking is, if i am recording to the external drive on the same port (using the hub) as the proejct mix, 8 tracks at 24bit/96khz, how much bandwidth is that coming through the firewire port? Because wouldnt it have to go from teh project mix through my comptuer then back out again to the external drive. Perhaps it would be fine.. but something tells me it wouldnt! |

Lets see...theoretically..
8 channels-24bit-96,000Hz
8*24*96000
= 18,432,000 bits per second
= 17.6 Mbps (approx.)
Thats the bandwith your project mix i/o would roughly take if you are recording on all 8 channels at 96Khz and 24bits. But this is only for your INPUT. The returns from your DAW would eat up bandwith too depending on the routing (plus MIDI, interface control..etc..etc..).
But if its running smooth with no problems then nothing to worry. Dont fix it if it aint broken! |
