Hi vaporizelife, welcome to the forums! It would be great if you could let us in on your budget. There are just too many options across a large range of prices..

well, my budget range is dependant on what i can get for my dolllar that is "legit" equipment. by that i mean, i can get something thats going to sync with protools or another protocol then i think that is ideal. with that in mind, i think about inputs and outputs and flexibility of interface so if i say 1000 is my budget and there is something out by digidesign that i might really want to consider for 1500 or even 2000..im curious to know. im going to be looking more online in the coming days but id appreciate suggestions.(what i might eventually need to step up to?)

*guitar mic. or two for acoustic. and a vocal mic. anything with more inputs may not be totally needed but, like i said, ideas would be great

If you are looking at Pro Tools, then you can go in for the M-Box 2 or even the 002 Rack (if your budget can stretch as far as $1500-2000). While M-box has two inputs and outputs, the 002 Rack has a lot more options. The M-box would be suitable for a mobile setup, but if you can afford it I'd say go for the 002R.

A 002/M-box setup will have its limitations (a maximum of 32 voices, fewer busses..), unless you invest in the Music Production Toolkit for LE (which would increase your track count to 48 ).

Not going the Pro Tools way could probably give you more flexibility. You could go in for Cubase SX 3 (around $600), Logic Pro ($999) or even Logic Express (a cut down version if you want to get started with something). For an interface (im assuming you wouldnt record more than two sources - with microphones - at the same time) you could go in for the MOTU Ultralite , Focusrite Saphire , RME fireface 400 ...

I've used both the Saphire and Ultralite and they are great for their price.
RME would definitely be a better option if you can fit it into your budget.

Microphones - You can buy the standard Sure SM57/58 (the all purpose dynamics) and for condensors you could try Rode, Oktava and SE...
