Pro Tools: Mac or PC?  Reply with quote

Which is a better platform for using a Pro Tools setup, Mac or PC? Any suggestions on a good 8 channel preamp for this?

Thanks

Mac/PC  Reply with quote

I think now it really doesnt matter. Windows XP with a bit of tweaking can behave quite well. And the Mac never crashing is a myth - it can be overloaded just as easily as a PC.

With PCs its just about getting the right hardware that is compatible with the software you are using. Since you are using Pro Tools you can check the Digidesign website for their list of supported hardware.

Some might argue that XP is a 32 bit system compared to the OSX which is 64 bit, but now with Windows X64 and the soon to arrive Windows Vista maybe this age old mac vs pc war may fade..

Personally I prefer the Mac because I'm just more comfortable with it and it doesnt need tweaking or anything..

As far as Pro Tools is concerned there is no difference between the Mac/PC version..

PCs can be a pain because of all the crap that is made for it. If it's dedicated just for audio you shudnt have problems.

Pro tools - preamps  Reply with quote

You didnt mention if you are going to be using Pro Tools HD,LE or M-Powered.

If its HD you can look at the Digidesign PRE, or something from Focusrite (ISA 428) or if you have a bigger budget something from Universal Audio, Neve or SSL..

If its LE you are using you have four options to chose from - Mbox 2 (two preamps-two inputs/two outputs), Mbox 2 Pro (2 preamps - 4 in, 4 out), 002 Rack and the 002 Factory (this being a controller version of the rack).

The 002 has 4 Preamps and 8 inputs and 8 outputs with ADAT and SPDIF digital I/Os.

You could go in for the 002 and buy 4 external preamps and connect their outputs to the Line Inputs of the 002, or you could also buy a Preamp that includes an analogue to digital convertor and connect the digital ADAT output of the preamp's convertor into the 002's ADAT input.

Not forgetting the M-Audio pro tools compatible interfaces, The OS X Drivers for my fw410 have not been so great mind. I have a feeling their XP Drivers may be better. Just a thought.. didn't notice if you had a preference to pci or external?

M-Audio  Reply with quote

Yeah, I cant say I've had the best time with M-Audio either. I've heard people talk about the amazing stability of M-Audio drivers, but while they have worked okay usually, sometimes they act just plain weird! But my experience with M-Audio has just been on PCs, cant comment on how they run on Macs..

Most m-audio devices just work on Macs. No need to install drivers or anything. Thats something to do with the OSX im sure though. Only "driver" i needed was when installin the Project Mix.

I have P4 intel 3.6 ghz HT,MB Intel D925 XECV2 www.intel.com/products/motherboard/D925XECV2/index.htm ,2 GB Ram ,VGA Matrox Parhelia apve www.matrox.com/graphics/en/pid/products/parhelia/apve.php , a Raptor 74Gb WD with 2 partitions 20 Gb (dependse how u want )for the system and the second partition called (Recording) and i have 500 GB WD x2 as Raid (1Tb) for library,
a very good Power supply must be used 650W will be good and like 4 to 6 Fans Smile
Sound Card M-audio Delta 10/10 LT and Protools HD2 Accel

With this system i'm running Nuendo 3.2 ,Melodyne,Sound Forge ,waves 5.2 and Milions of VSTs and plugins...Smile
and protools TDM 6.9.2 also and i can use the Digidesign asio driver with nuendo ,but Embarassed i like the M-audio.
Keep in mind that this system no way to run all this softwares without some very important tweaking Wink
