| guitar amphead direct in to a mixer/P.A., is it possible? |
|
|
Hi,
Could it be possible to input a guitar amphead (1/4 inch) in to a mixer/P.A.. would this damage the mixer, or sound bad? would I need a D/I box?
I play guitar for a few bands and it would be cool if I could just bring my head and guitar (the half stack is a beast for stairs). |

If I understand right, you'd probably explode the mixer/PA/AmpHead.
So unless your amp-head has a "phones" or "line" output (usually the pre-amp output, the pre-amp being the only thing you should take then) - which you can conect to the mixer, but a DI is always advisable to take with you to marry impedances (some mixers have Hi-Z input, but most have Low-Z) - it's a big no no.
A lot of folks conect high-Z synth outputs (only best have low-z outs) to their cheap mixers low-Z (although 1/4 inch) inputs and then blame "digital" for the "thin" sound, whereas it's being "thin" because impedances don't match - all of you try, a good active DI box can make a huge diference in most "home studio thin sound" cases.
But you're talking a whole new level here, conecting speaker output's to line input's... what a blast.
Now.. er... DON'T go conecting the outputs of the head that go to the cabinets direct to mix/PA (did I got that right?, for those are suposed to be conected directly to the speakers... they're already carrying a lot of wats... unless you want great brief fireworks (take care for safety though) at the expense of the gear (probably all of it)...
That if I understood your question right... it's not very clear.
Kind Regards,
AMR

Hi
Thanks for the reply, yes you interpreted my question correctly. I knew that idea seemed a little too good to be true, I guess you can't really cut corners with this kinda stuff. Again thanks allot for the info.
