files not saved in A 1.5  Reply with quote

I have been using A 1.5 for about 9 months now to edit spoken recordings.

When I edit files in Audition 1.5 and 'save' the file, I watch the blue bar for a minute or so while it saves the file..what I just found out is that for some weeks now all my editing was not saved at all.

I activated the software when I first installed it.

This morning I went to 'add/remove programs' and repaired the software.

Then brought up a file and hard limited it...saved it..brought it back up, and nothing is being saved.

I just lost months of work and am really bummed.

If anyone can help me sort this out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Wyatt

Have you tried the Adobe support forums located - http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.1de98f7a/ ? You need to sign up but, that would be the best bet.

Never used the program, so I cant personally help you.

Yes, and I have searched the knowledge base there as well.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi,

Well, assuming I understand somewhat what you say... (what "kind" of editing?)

Some "editing" is "non-destructive", so you need to save the "session", specially if working in multitrack mode, the "session" has all effect and editing parameters saved into it and still lets you get to keep the original unedited sound file - so , in thus later case, when you do "save as..." you are saving the original files, and not the edits... what you want is to "export".

So, to make sure you really have a "real" saved version of the edits, in an audio (not session) file, use "export", it will apply all effects and edits and render them into a new audio file.

You'll notice "destructive" edits for they "change" the waveform in front of you. Non-destructive usually are those splines/lines and effects we add to the track. It's wise to keep a session in case you want to get back and change something... so, personally, I'm not an apologist of destructive editing, most of the times... if possible.

Kind Regards,
AMR

Thank you for your reply. I see that I didn't explain in enough detail.

I am using EDIT view to work on old speech [tape] recordings that are then archived to CD. I record from tape into AA 1.5 via an EMU-1212M soundcard.

Depending on the problems I encounter with a particular recording, I will commonly use either de-hiss or noise reduction, and often hard limiting before proceeding to physical edits..that is, taking out individual mike noises, coughs, etc. and replacing them with appropriate amounts of ambient silence previously copied from the somewhere in the same recording.

I have done hundreds of hours of this, and when I have to stop before finishing, I had been able to save, [with the 'save non-audio information' box checked], and I could come back to the cue I left where I left off working.

Some time back I found I was not getting the non-audio information, and so I began writing down the time sig I stopped at. I'm afraid its looking like none of my work was actually saved since that time.

If I had not validated my copy online with Adobe, it is my vague recollection that it would only operate properly for a limited time. [I did in fact validate it, though] I am wondering if having previously had the 1.5 tryout version, [which I deleted before installing 1.5 full ver], may have left an entry in the registry that could cause a problem?

I tried editing out a single mike noise a little while ago, and it did save that. Then I limited the amplitude to -.5 and saved that. The hard limiting screen showed the blue bar as it completed, the waveform looked exactly correct, and it took over a minute to save the file. When I brought the file back up it did not have the -.5 amplitude that it did when I saved it.

I hope I have been able to describe the problem more clearly, and thank you for your response,

Wyatt

My next option seems to be to completely remove and re-install the program.

Hi,

It does seem like the symptoms point to a unlicensed version that stopped saving for lack of registration confirmation - reinstall may do the trick, but the problem may resurface - try to make sure it GETS validated and, as you say, doing a registry cleanup (with some utility like Norton RegClean) could probably help, altough Audition warns when it activates limitations, AFAIK.

However, there may be another issue here, Audition writes temporary files while doing "it's thing" and then copies those temp files OVER the final ones (hence the bars appearing) - could it be that you may have a permission problem in the destination file? (read only? windows security settings not allowing Audition to write?) Or something (program/definitions/etc.) may be messing up the temp area?

I think that if you explore about in Audition, there's somewhere where you can see where it uses TEMP area.

It's a weird problem, with weird symptoms, so it may take some digging into it... and a lot of patiente. I'm sorry you lost so much work.

Kind Regards,
AMR

I just removed it from my computer and re-installed. It didn't try to register with Adobe..hmm.

Upon installation, it did select a secondary temp file, [as before], and I can see no problems with that being read only.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly when it stopped saving my changes. It appears that it did originally. It does appear that I have lost a huge amount of work though.

I wondered if it might have been caused by a vst pluging, so I didn't use any on this install. I also tried 'save as', and renamed the file..still no.

Thank you for reponding; I appreciate it,

Wyatt
