What music production software should i use first?  Reply with quote

I'm really new to all music software. What software is good to start with? Ive noticed there are so many types of music software its hard to tell what does what and what the differences are between even the same brand titles. I plan to do music for awhile for a hobby and if i pick it up well i plan to do professional quality work. What software should i begin with if im also thinking about the long run? Or does the software change so much that it doesnt matter? What software has the best quality for the buck$ ? I'm just generally confused and dont have the money to make a mistake. Wink

if money wasnt an option what is the best?

There are a few 'standard' software packages like cubase, pro-tools and logic, for me these are the main ones you should be thinking about as it's definitely good to 'start as you mean to go on'!

Once you learn a piece of complex software it can be a headache to change!

The programmes are essentially the same, it's the sounds you use and your experience of engineering that makes the difference.

Logic has fantastic build in sounds and effects, top class - cubase doesn't seem to offer much in the way of built in sounds so you'd have to get external sounds or plugins which is cool as you can add more and more high quality sounds and effects where there's no limit (apart from computer size)

I work closely with one of the uk's top mix engineers who, like me, uses cubase, but we both have plug ins for our sounds/effects.

I love the usability of cubase - There are functions that I couldn't do without. There are big producers and big hit songs being done on cubase, logic and pro tools so you're basically fine with any of them.

You can hear the results I get with Cubase SX 3 on my websites audio page, I have a small recording studio called http://www.applebeam.com where I do a lot of production using a cool little set up I have - I love it, SX3 works for me bro so I would recommend that if you have PC, or logic if you're on mac.

Ragarding 'what's the best', well there is no 'best', some dudes make incredible beats on keyboards but Polow Da Don's set up looks great (he uses cubase too by the way!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hDzuumZTgw
