| USING COMPRESSION IN COOL EDIT FOR VOCALS |

Hi,
I do voice overs and I like the sound of my voice when I use the compression feature in Cool Edit.( the one that has 'Great'! after it.) But I would like to have just a little less gain. I'm very low tech, so if someone would be so kind as to just tell me what numbers to change, and to what, to achieve this, I'd be most grateful.

Hmm I don't see the word compression anywhere in Adobe Audition, which is what CoolEdit became. I do see Dynamics Processing, yet don't see what you have explained.
Basically though you could just use your ears and back the gain off to taste, I mean this is all very dependent on the starting gain to begin with, you know?

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Vocal compressor (Great!) is in the presets/Dynamics Processing. Perhaps the newer edition of Cool Edit/Adobe Audition doesn't have it. |

But the point I guess is that there will not be a "correct" figure here, it will depend on the initial level, the eq, and various other things.
I think you need to experiment with the level and select something that sounds correct.
Voice can sound great with lots of compression for voice overs though, or also none at all. Shame we can't hear an example then we could comment specifically on that perhaps.
You might try a small ratio, say 2:1 but with a low threshold so all of the signal becomes compressed, then raise the thresold until you like the sound....

Ok
I listened to both those demos on there and they are not bad!
The level is reasonably good, one thing I did notice though is that the huntington file has a nasty edit at about 6 seconds, this is due to a bad cross fade. You could repair that by using processing a new fade in/out on that section.
Also some sibilance is present, which can be removed with a de-esser, this is a bit like a frequency dependent compressor, so only those sibilant spots get compressed, I think CoolEdit might have one?

hehe yes I was trying to work around that with some theory as I do not have that setting here to look at specifically.
you could try the method I mentioned with changing the threshold, I'm sure that compressor will have a threshold setting.
