i have recentley purchased a Mac G5 (not the intel version)
Also an M-AudioPhile 192 Soundcard & a version of Pro Tools M-Powered 7
Mac / Dual 2.2GHZ processors / 3 Gb DDr / 2 x 250 GB harddrive / OSX 10.4.8
My problem is when i installed the soundcard i followed the book and installed the driver first, then the card,All working fine at this point, logic pro / Live 5 (both worked with card) then i bought Pro Tools 7 inserted the disk and installed the driver on the disk (as requested) then installed pro tools, after the mac turned off and back on i went to run pro tools ,it when through the begining bit then said no M-Audio hardware conected???please connect and try again, now pro logic was working with the card so i know its not the card?,i then read on a forum to not use the driver that comes with the disk, and to download the latest one from the website,so i uninstalled pro tools and downloaded the latest driver and reinstalled pro tools, it now went through the begining bit and seemed to load "EXCELLENT" i thought! now i tried to play i tunes no sound??and the mixer window that comes with the soundcard has no life(sound coming through it?)i then uninstalled pro tools again, Still no sound on anything?, i then reinstalled the driver that came with the M-Audio soundcard, restarted the mac and now i have the sound back???....its like pro tools will work but with no output sound and nothing else will work, or all my other sounds will work and pro tools will not load or recognize my soundcard.........please can someone steer me in the right direction as im getting no joy from most of the support, drivers etc...
Thanks in advance. |

Hey enforcer,
pro tools uses its on driver for sound cards called CoreAudio. you should see it appearing in the dock when you load protools. coreaudio acts as a controller through which all of your software talks to the soundcard.
However, Pro Tools is extremely precious about coreaudio, once you have loaded protools it holds on to coreaudio for itself and wont let any other programs talk to it. if you have just used protools it will be telling itunes to get lost and leave coreaudio alone, which is why you cant play your music.
to get round this you simply have to restart machine after using protools. after a restart all your other programs will switch to the M-audio drivers (except for logic which will load an instance of CoreAudio in most cases)
its a bit of a pain but its the same with all of the digidesign stuff, its infamous for not working well with other software, but its a great DAW so we learn to put up with it.
Basically, Restart your machine. and it should work.

But still no joy Its just will not recognize the M-Audio card with pro tools installed, Which driver should i use? the one with the card? or the one with pro tools?? or the one from m-audio site??, has anyone else had problems with digidesin software like this?
I never had problems like this with my pc, im begining to wish i hadnt bought the mac as so far in my view PC seem to be far better.
even technical help from digidesign havent got back to me after 7 days, thats bad from a company so big,
on another note is there any software for the mac (thats not digidesin) thats simular to pro tools that i can give a go,?? any advice welcome.
Best Regards and thankyou in Advance. |

Hi Enforcer!
Could you give us more details? Which version of M-Powered is it? 7.1/7.2/7.3? Which version of the M-Audio drivers have you installed?
I suggest you uninstall the M-Audio drivers (and other software that came with it) and Pro Tools and reinstall the card, but DONT install the supplied M-Audio drivers. Then, insert the Pro Tools CD/DVD and install Pro Tools ONLY. The installation menu should have an option to chose a 'Custom Install'. Once you are under the Custom Install page make sure "Core Audio" is ticked.
Pro Tools does not have separate drivers as such. The Core Audio drivers get installed when you install Pro Tools - unless manually chosen not to.
Try this and get back to us.
Also, are you using the PPC/Universal Binary installer and not the Intel Mac install?
If nothing works, you can try the Digidesign support forum - where you can get answers straight from Technical Support team. Its a good forum, if you are a Pro Tools fan.

| Trash 'em |
|
|
I guess we might have found your problem.
Uninstall everything again. Then go to every single partition on you Mac and trash (delete) all folders named "Digidesign Databases". Then go to Mac HDD>Library>Application Support and delete the Digidesign folder. Then go to Mac HDD>Library>Preferences and trash the Pro Tools preference file (should be something like com.Digidesign.ProTools.plist).
Mac HDD is your main partition on which the OS is installed, you could have named it differently. Incase you have multiple users on your mac, you might have to go to Mac HDD>Users>"User Name">Library.
Then, use spotlight in OSX (shortcut: Command+spacebar) to run a search for 'M Audio'. If you find any M-Audio preference files (.plist) or Core Audio files trash them.
Empty the trash can and reinstall Pro Tools with its own drivers and not the M-Audio drivers.
Seems to me like the uninstaller hasn't removed everything, so there is some conflict happening. You could also go to the Digi website and download the complete Pro Tools uninstaller in case you dont want to trash things yourself. |

Thanks conquistadore
But still no joy,ive uninstalled pro tools removing all the sub folders as requested by your good self, installed only the driver that came with pro tools, reinstalled pro tools, (then again) it recognizes it first time round but as soon as i switch off and back on , no m - audio hardware found???
could it be something to do with the ilok?? (never seen theses before as ive never had a mac before or any digidesign programs?) do you have to remove it after you have finished pro tools?? or can you leave it in there?? could it be faulty???..............is it worth me unistalling the OSX operating system and trying over again??, Digidesign tec help never got back to me either 12 days later........(very bad customer services).
I am very gratefull for all your help conquistadore but i dont know what else to try??Everyone i know hasnt had this sort of problems with there Mac, why am i??
Thankyou for all your time and Help.
Regards. |

This is very odd. Reinstalling the OS isn't necessar. And I doubt this has anything to do with the iLok, the iLok doesnt have anything to do with the M-Audio card.
I had a similar problem when i was setting up a HD rig last week, but after uninstalling Pro Tools and reinstalling it a couple of times it started working.
What are you doing to uninstall PT? Are you using the installer form the CD?
It's odd that Digi CS hasnt replied yet. I again suggest you try the
