ben_audiocourses: ken, maybe you could give us a brief description of what you did
Ken Boatman: ben and I agreed that i would use the course book as a "guideline" and developmy own mix on my own plugins and try to get the song sounding as best i could
Ken Boatman: I created the project and set all tracks to unity gain and starting mixing
Ken Boatman: i used Waves and UAD plugins along with Sonar 6 PE
Ken Boatman: I struggle with EQ, so this was a real eye opener for me
Ken Boatman: i learned a lot, but after I mixed the song, my EQ setting looked much different than the book
Ken Boatman: i compared the curves, but that was for reference after the fact
Ken Boatman: i used to use EQ to ehance the instruments sound, it was new to me to use EQ for making a "mix"
Ken Boatman: getting each track to fit in its own little pocket and co-exist with the other tracks was very new for me, but it was a lot of fun

ben_audiocourses: but what do you guys (dave & dan) make of the mix
ben_audiocourses: remember this is material supplied to ken, he has no control over the musical content
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I thought the EQ was great.
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I haven't heard the original version to compare yet but I think he did a superb job on the EQ

Ken Boatman: Ben, just for input... I tried a re-mix after reading your emails and I over did the bass and kick too much. It was more dominant than it should have been, so I left it alone and did not resubmit it

ben_audiocourses: yes the one thing i picked up on was that the low end in the track was slightly 'lightweight' for a club track
ben_audiocourses: low end being the kick drum and the bass synth
ben_audiocourses: i'll tell you a good trick for adding a bit of oomph to a kick drum
ben_audiocourses: and you can use this in many styles of music
ben_audiocourses: set up a synth with a sine wave at a low freq
ben_audiocourses: send this signal to a gate
ben_audiocourses: and send the original kick drum to the gates sidechain input
ben_audiocourses: what do you think this will do?
Ken Boatman: use the synth to reinforce the kick's sound?
Ken Boatman: thus adding frequency
ben_audiocourses: yes that is correct
Ken Boatman: additional freq
ben_audiocourses: and the gate is doing what exactly?

DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Kind of. I haven't done a lot of serious mixing just made things sound good. lol
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I did learn some things about gates though this week.

ben_audiocourses: we can quickly run through a bit of gating now if you like?
ben_audiocourses: it's a useful tool
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I am learning as though this is all new to me.

ben_audiocourses: well in it's most basic form a gate removes unwanted noise right? so a guitar player may use a gate to remove buzz and hum when (s)he is not playing
David Selonke: yes i understand that
ben_audiocourses: there are lots of times when using a gate in a studio is useful also
ben_audiocourses: for instance on vocals, also on toms for instance to stop unwanted background noise
ben_audiocourses: so with a typical gate, the way we determine when the gate allows sound through is by use of the THRESHOLD control
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: On vocals it would stop the picking up of breathing noise right?
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: and etc
Ken Boatman: not always
ben_audiocourses: thats right, and also any other unwanted noises
ben_audiocourses: but it will only work if the 'noise' does not happen at the same time as 'wanted' sounds
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Got ya
ben_audiocourses: so for instance you can't remove someone breathing whilst they're playing guitar
Ken Boatman: yes - the threshold setting is crucial
ben_audiocourses: absolutely
David Selonke: how does the threshold setting work?
Ken Boatman: you also do not want to omit an intentional note
ben_audiocourses: the threshold is a value in dB
ben_audiocourses: and this is set at a level depending on the material you are working with
ben_audiocourses: if you have a vocal take
ben_audiocourses: you would find the quietest passage
ben_audiocourses: and set the threshold so that it allows this passage through
David Selonke: ok so it is set to just elminate sound below a certain lvl?
ben_audiocourses: any louder passages will then obviously be above the threshold
ben_audiocourses: exactly david

ben_audiocourses: the gate will open as soon as signal level exceeds the threshold

ben_audiocourses: you may also have a release/decay time
ben_audiocourses: this is how quickly the gate closes
ben_audiocourses: with a setting of 0ms
ben_audiocourses: the gate closes as soon as the signal falls below threshold
David Selonke: ok...i get it now...
ben_audiocourses: with a 100ms decay, the signal 'fades' out over the duration of 100ms
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: So what setting is best or does that have to do with what you are gating?
ben_audiocourses: it is totally dependent on what you are gating
ben_audiocourses: drums and percussive sources will require a quick attack
Ken Boatman: I can see how this would be useful for reinforcing the sound of a kick drum, very interesting
ben_audiocourses: to get the initial transients
ben_audiocourses: yes indeed, gating as well as compression can also be used to 'shape' sounds
ben_audiocourses: as a gate does not have to close to silence
Ken Boatman: totally agree
ben_audiocourses: it can just attenuate
Ken Boatman: i learned a lot about compression too this week
ben_audiocourses: yes compression is very important, really one of the cornerstones of engineering
ben_audiocourses: dan and david, you can get some nice freeware compressors and gates off the net to experiement with
David Selonke: yes iv been messing with cubase

Ken Boatman: I took a few of the tracks and created a segment which would loop over and over again. I then played with different settings of the compressor and was really a maze Ste when I heard the vast possibilities which were possible
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I have sonar 6 PE
ben_audiocourses: yes compression really lets you mould a sound
ben_audiocourses: dan - i think these are VST so you may need a VST/DX wrapper
Ken Boatman: sonar handles VST's very well
ben_audiocourses: does it - i have to admit i'm not a sonar user so i'm not up to date with it
ben_audiocourses: you use sonar don't you ken
Ken Boatman: sonar has a plugin manager for VST's

ben_audiocourses: i mostly use cubase
Ken Boatman: just import them with the plugin manager before launching Sonar. You should be good to go after that
David Selonke: i have LE, it came with my small mixer but before that i messed with adobe audition
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Is there much difference between Sonar and Cubase?
Ken Boatman: it does indeed "wrap" them
ben_audiocourses: daniel - only in the workflow and aesthetics i'd argue
ben_audiocourses: and they are 'differences' rather than pros and cons
Ken Boatman: i only know Sonar it for a Windows OS only
Ken Boatman: it = is
ben_audiocourses: there's music in the charts from cubase, logic, sonar, ableton

DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I intend on downloading Cubase soon and then I will compare and see which one I like the best.
ben_audiocourses: i think now all the packages are on an even keel so pick the one that suits your method of working
ben_audiocourses: Pro Tools is obviously useful if you are swapping sessions with commercial studios
ben_audiocourses: but for home recording any of them will do
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I do plan on getting Pro Tools as well.
ben_audiocourses: I'm not sure if this has been resolved yet,
ben_audiocourses: but in Pro Tools LE versions
ben_audiocourses: i.e. the cheap solutions like digi001,002 etc
ben_audiocourses: there used to be no Plug In delay compensation
ben_audiocourses: which is a real problem if you are mixing ITB (in the box)
ben_audiocourses: for this reason I have never pursued Pro Tools for my home setup
ben_audiocourses: as i mix almost entirely ITB and need PDC

Ken Boatman: becuase i run Windows and cannot run Mac. I thought Sonar was the best for me becuase of the "feel" as mixing ease. It also has a great wealth of plugins which can run natively
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I chose it because it was one of the programs listed as needed for this course and just happened to be the first one I got a hold of.
Ken Boatman: you'll love it. it is really nice

ben_audiocourses: but, in the uk at least, the cost difference is BIG
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I am a Computer Graphics Art Designer and I prefer PC over Mac any day although there are others that would argue that. lol
ben_audiocourses: interesting to hear a graphics bod say that - you'd think from Apple advertising that every graphic designer on the planet is running a mac!
Ken Boatman: things are better since i have a dedicated DAW when i used to share applications, things got very bad
ben_audiocourses: yes, AV and firewall + sequencer causes massive problems
Ken Boatman: yup
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I guess it is what you enjoy and can do with either one your way that makes the choice on what to use.
ben_audiocourses: i use different partitions in one PC in my home studio
Ken Boatman: that would work well also
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I was raised on the Windows Platform of a PC and have learned it inside and out. I guess if it had been the other way around it might be different. Although before windows really took hold Mac was a site better.
ben_audiocourses: yeah, i don't have the space for several PCs at home - dedicated DAW is obviously better though
ben_audiocourses: yeah, i think nearly everyone in the western world can operate a windows machine to some level
ben_audiocourses: and if you get used to Win then Mac OS can seem a bit weird - wheres the ^^�%^�^ start menu!!!!

ben_audiocourses: it's all starting to converge now though - intel chips in macs, able to run win on mac and mac os on pc
David Selonke: Ya, I do internet tech support and when someone calls in with a mac or even linux i get totally lost
ben_audiocourses: i get really frustrated with macs (purely cause i know windows i'm sure) and i just grind to a halt
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Linux as come a long way.
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I can use a mac but i feel better on pc
ben_audiocourses: yeah, i haven't tried Vista yet
ben_audiocourses: i hear the system requirements are pretty steep

David Selonke: 64bit processor with like at leat a gig of ram
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Quark is the choice for most creators in media but I prefer CorelDraw and can do just as much and just as good as Quark.
ben_audiocourses: i think i'm going to hold off Vista for a while
David Selonke: ya its mainly for like a media center type of thing
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I have a dual core processor with 64 bit and 2 gig of ram. It is an AMD processor as they are best for graphics.
David Selonke: i agree...im tottally amd
ben_audiocourses: i've just built a dual core (intel) at work and it flies!
ben_audiocourses: i only use AMD at home mind
David Selonke: AMDs Better! lol
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Building them yourself is the only way to fly. I haven't bought a computer in ten years. I build what I want.
ben_audiocourses: yeah i like AMD, been using them since the K2 chip
David Selonke: plus if u build them yourself u save a ton of money
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: AMD seems to handle large image files with ease.
ben_audiocourses: yeah i'm a self build man also, as you say cheaper and for DAWs you can really optimise them
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: You sure do.
ben_audiocourses: AMD have traditionally given better floating point calculation performance which is better for plugins such as reverbs
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I don't like spending extra for things I'll never use. That is why I build mine.
David Selonke: i just love talking to these ppl that say o ya i got a great computer for like big bucks and im like hey my computers better then yours and i got it for half that
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I enjoy proving to others that my computer is better then their big fancy high dollar computer. lol
ben_audiocourses: yeah some people really get ripped off with pcs
David Selonke: Custom all the way...
ben_audiocourses: tell you what though, take a mac apart and it even looks nice and neat inside - something my PCs never do!
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I have probably sold more computers and printers and etc. to Best Buy and Circut City customers than their own employees. I have heard some employees of these stores say things that they can't prove or back up and try to sell the customer on bigger and priceier is better.
David Selonke: i will never buy a computer from a store like that...they lie all the time
ben_audiocourses: If you hang around in a high street computer shop for a day you hear more lies than is healthy!
ben_audiocourses: i've heard absolutely ludicrous claims made by salesmen
David Selonke: ya
ben_audiocourses: some of them are literally nonsensical
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I have stopped and asked customers in those stores while I am shopping questions about what they are wanting and I'll end up selling them something better than the store employees do and it isn't something I build. I should be getting commission from these stores.LOL

DANIEL WORKMAN SR: Well, I have learned a long time ago that sales people are taught to lie and tell the customer things that "they" want to hear whether it is right or wrong.
David Selonke: ya
ben_audiocourses: yeah i can't stand the whole concept of salespeople myself but it is obviously a necessary evil i guess
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I listen to the customer's needs and wants and then build from there. If I end up building the machine it will be the best quality at the cheapest price whether I make a lot of money or not. I usually end up making more as they tell others about me.
ben_audiocourses: yeah honest is valued by most customers
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I always have repeat business and that is what keeps a company afloat.

I could not force my self to lie about the value of a car, nor could I run out the door and try to beat a mob of 20 other salesman trying to get to the customer first. If that were to happen to me, I would slam my car in reverse and spin out backwards getting out of there. LOL

ben_audiocourses: and it is crazy
ben_audiocourses: it is just tracks made up of little audio glitches
ben_audiocourses: like those nasty digital audio noises that ruin recordings
DANIEL WORKMAN SR: I could see the Black people over hear doing a robotic type dance to that one.
ben_audiocourses: these guys make their own glitches and then make tracks out of it
