Overheads - differences between behind, above and infront  Reply with quote

Hi! Im just curious about different overhead setups. Can you give me an idea how it will sound or what the sound will be like if the overheads (just 2 stereo mics) were placed up behind the drummer, directly above the drums, and infront? And the advantages and disadvantages if there are. Thank you so much Smile

Well just think about the directionality of the drums and their relative volumes depending on position.

If the overheads are infront they will be pointing at the kickdrum, so you will get more kickdrum, some toms, plenty of cymbals but less snare, hats and floor tom.

Behind the drummer you will get a more clicky kickdrum as you are facing the beater side, you will get more hats and snare because the snare is closer and angled back towards the drummer in most setups.

Above the kit you wil get little kickdrum and you are looking at the shell of the drum, plenty of cymbals, lots of toms and a fair chunk of snare.

its just a case of getting a drummer to play, feeding a mic through to headphones and moving it around until u get the best sound.
