robert Rosequist: Sunny in florida!
Ken Boatman: yes sir
Me: I wonder if you would mind chatting about how you have found the Live Workshops.. this would give a great account (i'm reckoning) on how these function.
Ken Boatman: actually, they are pretty neat...
Ken Boatman: i get to see how other courses are going and learn something about what they are studying...
Ken Boatman: I also get to share my material with the group and get feedback from others.
Ken Boatman: its really an opportunity to get a great overview of some other courses and the materials
Ken Boatman: how was that?
Me: A magical testimonial.
Me:
Ken Boatman: lol
b m: haha
robert Rosequist: I needed to look better on paper so the college I work for wanted me to take a course that would give me some merit
Me: Great reason.
robert Rosequist: oops, I thought we were supposed to talk about why we enrolled in the program in general
Russell Brown: what d'you work as?
robert Rosequist: but I also love to learn, so when they said they would pay, I was all for it!

Russell Brown: I'm head of music at a secondary school (got a promotion since I was last here
Me:
b m: cool
robert Rosequist: cheers!
Russell Brown: More paperwork
Russell Brown: less teaching
robert Rosequist: always!
Ken Boatman: I am a professional musician and have been since 1982. I recently decided to establish a home studio to do recordings in to learn about the art of mixing, mastering, recording etc.
ncmcmahon: I'm in finanical services marketing. Music is a hobby. After the last class, I got married, moved from Los Angeles back to NY. Thought the class could help me pick it up again.
robert Rosequist: great Ken, I too am a musician also and its my biggest expertise, but I was born in 1982!
Ken Boatman:
the_electrosushi: I work for Apple, I am a Mac OS X specialist, I enrolled in the course as I'd like to get a qualification which would allow me to enter the music industry, musician too
Russell Brown: Good bless the Mac
ncmcmahon: Macs rule.
the_electrosushi: eheh
Russell Brown: Is it Chris or Ben who can't stand them?
b m: haha
Russell Brown: I had a mac for my last course
Ken Boatman: I had a big Mac for lunch
Russell Brown: lol
robert Rosequist: haha
b m: lol
the_electrosushi: hehe
Me: lol
Me: I like Big Macs
Ken Boatman:
robert Rosequist: arent they royal's with cheese in Britian
Russell Brown: Have to travel 150 miles to get to a McDonalds
Me: lol
Russell Brown: And get a ferry
ncmcmahon: You guys need to watch Super Size Me. You'll never eat another Big Mac or Fries again!
robert Rosequist: Sorry, just thinking about Pulp Fiction
the_electrosushi: seen that... scary
Russell Brown: Great film
robert Rosequist: I was thinking the same thing Nancy!!
Me: KFC is pretty good too.
Russell Brown: Kent Football Club?
Me: as in UK football Russell?
Russell Brown: Forgot we're international
b m: there's only one form of 'football'!
Me: Oh dear, already the footie boys are in town, (such heathens)
b m:
Russell Brown: Oh yeah, you're a cricket fan! Good ashes by the way
ncmcmahon: You mean of course the great American pigskin and gridiron version, right? lol
b m: hmmmmm haha
Russell Brown: lol
Me: Are you "getting" any of this course brit humour you guys state side? (nancy is NY, she is closer).
Me: coarse even
robert Rosequist: Ok, so what about everone else, what do you guys do, aspirations? etc.
Ken Boatman: Absolutely!
ncmcmahon: I got football. No clue on "good ashes"
Russell Brown: ashes: England vAustralia Cricket event
Me: That's a great question Robert .. what are yours?
robert Rosequist: Music tastes? Will we be working with partners on any projects?
Me: I'm hoping some of you will team up a bit... no reason why not. Might be a good time to add each other as friends.
the_electrosushi: sounds nice...
Russell Brown: Recording a CD of students bands at the mo
Russell Brown: will post some when done
robert Rosequist: We can refine some of our music during this course, correct?
Russell Brown: sorry, misread what you wrote rrosequist
robert Rosequist: no prob
Me: OK lets take this dialogue into a focus.
Me: Ben.
robert Rosequist: nice
b m: sure
Me: Would you mind chatting through how the course works for the new guys.. indicating what to expect.
Me: n stuff..
b m: absolutely
Me: Thanks
b m: well as you all probably know you will have a set of questions every week
b m: (unless you are on the mixing and mastering course)
b m: and your main focus should be on completing the questions each week
b m: we obviously have these workshops on a sunday
b m: the workshop is a good 'social' opportunity
b m: and also a chance to discuss relevant topics
b m: to answer your question Robert...
b m: in the MT module the assessment is purely exam based
robert Rosequist: at the very end correct?
b m: yes, i believe it is June or July
b m: and this takes place at an institution geographically near you
b m: as far as your own material goes
b m: the weekly questions don't rely too much on music/audio itself
b m: they are more theory based on the whole although there are some exceptions
b m: however, the workshops are a great place to play your material to other students, get feedback from your peers and chris and myself
b m: etc
robert Rosequist: thanks for the info.
b m: and i'm sure that as the weeks progress you'll all be helping each other out a lot as you will all have different skills
b m: no problem
b m: ken you have to leave early, is your mix on the FTP?
Ken Boatman: Yes, I do have to leave early due to the US daylight savings time. My mix is on my FTP, I can supply a link
b m: please do
b m: Ken is doing the mixing/mastering course
b m: each week he is provided with audio files for a different song
b m: and he has to produce a mix
Ken Boatman: This is my preliminary mix without any feedback or tweaking...
b m: ok thats fine
Ken Boatman: also - I hope Chris likes the drums! LOL
b m: haha
Ken Boatman: http://www.kenboatman.com/uploads/AudioCourses/Already Gone - Ken Mix 1.mp3
robert Rosequist: So these questions at the end of each weeks lesson will directly reflect the types of questions that will be on the final exam that the assessment is 100% based upon
b m: robert, that is correct
b m: there are a lot of weekly questions, but you should find yourself amply prepared for the exam
Russell Brown: is the link correct/
Russell Brown: ?
b m: we have a 100% pass rate so far
robert Rosequist: wonderful, ok I'm getting a grip on this now. Sorry I was a little foggy on everything since I signed up sort of last minute
b m: you need to copy the link and paste it - the last few words aren't hyperlinked
b m: robert thats fine
Russell Brown: ok
Ken Boatman: http://www.kenboatman.com/uploads/AudioCourses/Already%20Gone%20-%20Ken%20Mix%201.mp3
b m: if you could all check out the link ken has provided and his mix of a track
b m: what was the name of this genre ken, pop-punk or something like that?
robert Rosequist: Chris was a great help at getting me up and running at the last minute though. So thanks Chris
Ken Boatman: Punk / Rock
b m: you all checking this out?
the_electrosushi: yep
ncmcmahon: Uh, I'm in a ski lodge with music playing. Will have to check it out later. Sorry!
b m: haha, ok nancy
Russell Brown: swoosh swoosh
robert Rosequist: So is that it for the first week, just do week ones material and then keep notes of the questions asked at the end?
b m: how the other half live
Russell Brown: like the delay on the voices
robert Rosequist: Sorry should I be asking these questions in private as to not tie up group time?
b m: robert - each week is a different topic, some topics are spread across 2 weeks (larger topics such as synthesis)
b m: robert, i'll write the rest in a PM
robert Rosequist: ok great
b m: so what do you guys think of that mix?
b m: those of you that aren't living it up in a ski lodge
Russell Brown: Well put together
Ken Boatman: i think the guitars sound a bit "muddy" but they sounded better on my studio monitors
b m: i actually think the guitars could be louder in places
the_electrosushi: well I am a newbie here so stop me in case... it sounds nice on my monitors, but isn't the bass a bit weak?
Ken Boatman: as a guitarist I have been criticized often with guitar sbeing too loud - so i have to overemphasize keeping them low in the mix
Ken Boatman: what speakers are you listening on currently?
the_electrosushi: yamaha ns10
Ken Boatman: hmmm. i have good bass response on mine. dunno
Ken Boatman: Ben? (the "ears")
b m: well i think that the bass could be a bit more refined, there sounds like there is a bump in the low mids on one of the guitars
b m: which conflicts with the bass guitar a touch
b m: but yes i think the bass could be a bit louder
b m: maybe use something like sidechain compression on the bass line with the kick as the sidechain input
b m: to get the sound pumping a little bit
Ken Boatman: i'll try that
b m: this is a track that could also benefit from some automation to give a 'push' in the chorus i think
b m: typically this style of music would be compressed heavily in the mastering phase also
the_electrosushi: chorus in the global mix?
b m: do you mean a chorus effect on the master bus?
Ken Boatman: i used chorus only in the chorus guitars to give them some movement
the_electrosushi: ehm.. yes
b m: i'm personally not a fan of 'chorus' effects but they can be used to good effect (excuse the pun)
Ken Boatman: Ben, will you be sending a mix critique later on?
b m: interesting this track as it has drum replacement
b m: ken, yes, i'll send after workshop
robert Rosequist: Ok guys, see you all next week
Ken Boatman: ok - i will produce another mix before moving on to the new track
robert Rosequist: nice meeting you all
the_electrosushi: same here
Ken Boatman: see u next week
b m: bye ken
Ken Boatman: c u guys
b m: bye robert
Ken Boatman has left the conference.
the_electrosushi: bye..
Russell Brown: bye
robert Rosequist has left the conference.
ncmcmahon: take care all.
b m: pitch black outside now
b m: roll on summer
b m: edward - what is cork like? i went to dublin last week and am thinking bout going to cork sometime
Russell Brown: whisky in the jar?
the_electrosushi: well... it's a lot smaller then dublin, the all city center can be walked, pubs (many)
ncmcmahon: Are we all set? Still time left to hit the slopes.
the_electrosushi: even though it is the second city of ireland, there is a Big gap of dimension with dublin
the_electrosushi: i so envy you nancy...
Me: back
b m: nancy, the workshop runs til 8pm GMT but if the pistes are calling....
b m: i thought dublin was a bit disappointing actually
ncmcmahon: I can stay on until my battery gives out. No problem.
b m: it was a lot like london in the centre
Me: Nancy and Russel, you are both Digital Audio, therefore you e-mail directly your work for moderation. chris@audiocourses.com
b m: haha no it is fine nancy, don't want to keep you seperated from your skiing!
the_electrosushi: actually, the all southern coast of ireland is like a "copy" of UK cities
b m: is it really edward? where would you recommend visiting in ireland?
Russell Brown: ok
the_electrosushi: if you go to donegal you might see the real ireland
the_electrosushi: galway is really cute city
the_electrosushi: lot's of live music throughout the city
Russell Brown: what's the time where you are Nancy?
the_electrosushi: and mostly original music
ncmcmahon: It's 3:16pm we lost an hour last night for daylight savings
b m: might have to check them out i think edward
Russell Brown: skiing or snowboard?
the_electrosushi: if you come near cork let me know in case
ncmcmahon: Skiing right now. May try boarding next time. Looks like more fun.
Me: On the topics of trips...
b m: will do, they fly their from my local airport so i might try cork in the autumn
Russell Brown: great fun
Me: we as school (as a bunch of people) are having a trip to Amsterdam in July. You are all welcome.
ncmcmahon: Groovy
Me: July 19,20,21.
Russell Brown: Windmills or the other Amsterdam?
Me: We've been saying it for years, wouldn't it be great to actually meet-up.
the_electrosushi: school trip! yey
Me: Yeah well staff and students, ex students, associates...
Me: just a big party really with AC in common.
Me: http://acbash.pbwiki.com
Russell Brown: Would be great but will be in Chicago, will have to post pics.
Me: Oh we will beecast a lot of it.. and pics too
Me: beercast..
the_electrosushi: oh yes.. i can imagine some quality time in amsterdam
the_electrosushi: ever seen that movie of Cheech and chong going to amsterdam
Me: If you wish to come, let me know so I can add you to the wiki, in order you can add your details. We have people from all over coming...
the_electrosushi: i'd love to, I'll let you know if I can manage to take those days
Me: Great
Me:
the_electrosushi: so, another newbie's question: what are the recommended books for the Recording Techniques course? Apart from Sound and Recording which I got
Russell Brown: Sound engineer's pocket book worked for me
b m: brb
Russell Brown: is that what it was called? canny remember
ncmcmahon: Gotta go all. See you next week.
Me: Bye Nancy
the_electrosushi: enjoy!
Russell Brown: bye nancy
b m: bye nacny
Me: Sound on Sound magazine, including back issues is useful also.
Me: http://www.audiocourses.com/amazon-buy-B00007GARS.html
the_electrosushi: ah.. the subscrptin I saw...
Me: There is such a wealth of information on the internet though..
Me: Like you are sitting behind it all.
b m: was just about to say that, the internet is your friend!
the_electrosushi: yep, I got few peers... gearwire.com mac-music.com and so on, any reccomended to put on the bookmarks?
Me: The key here is to obtain three or four resources and compare and contrast.
Me: Our own site has some good stuff too, you can use the search here on the forums : http://www.audiocourses.com/forum/search.php
Me: and here for artcles: http://www.audiocourses.com/search.html
the_electrosushi: I use it as reference and got some good help... I think it was you Ben who gave few tips about a PA..
b m: it might have been more or maybe wailing alley cat
b m: me not more
the_electrosushi: ooh yes.. sorry I confused
b m: no worries
the_electrosushi: so now we've lost the US people...
Me: It's normal people come and go a little..
Me: Once they get started on the work there will be more discussions.
b m: we're missing 2 other americans tonight also, dan and david
b m: they should be here next week though
the_electrosushi: in fact... all I need to start doing now are the activities on the MT forum right?
b m: RT forum for you?
the_electrosushi: oops
b m: hehehe
Russell Brown: is there a link for the DA questions Chris?
Me: There is a thread specifically for that yes Russell.
Me: Oh that's odd
Me: Just checked, it is invisiable.. (we'll have that fixed later) it is there but not visible yet.
Russell Brown: whats that?
Me: Thanks.
Russell Brown: OK, well, is there anything we need to cover tonight? Or is it straight down to the questions?
Me: Straight into it Russell
Russell Brown: else
Me:
Russell Brown: Well, gonna go, All my pupils have performance exams tomorrow and I've about 20 pages of accomps to learn.

the_electrosushi: alright... I got a mail from the local institution over here telling me that the exam was confirmed, but no requests for payments
the_electrosushi: positive feedback indeed for this first session
Me: Great, once you settle in, it's a lot of fun
the_electrosushi: yes, I was looking at the activities, if I got it correctly, I will be answering to those questions using books, internet and so on
Me: yes..
Me: and there are practicals to do in some weeks also.
the_electrosushi: silly question I reckon... but hey, I'm the newbie lol
Me: Not silly at all.
Me: Feel free to ask anything you wish, thats why we are here. We are here for you
the_electrosushi: cool, the fact of teaming up to complete activities sounds very nice

Me:
the_electrosushi: there must be plenty of them with the amount of turismi hitting those places
Me: oh yes!
Me: I like that aspect of web based work...
Me: Actually I love that aspect
the_electrosushi: ehehe... I'd love to have the possibility of doing the same with my normal job
Me: Move into tech support..
Me: web based
Me:
Me: in fact i hear thats easier now with PRIME skype..
the_electrosushi: yes, there is also a new web search based on this... I think is www.chacha.com
the_electrosushi: it feels a bit strange the first times... there is a guy doing th eweb search with you
Me: Something similar I just installed http://sound-swicki.eurekster.com/
