the_electrosushi has joined the conference.
Me: hi
the_electrosushi: hello people
Me: I think the others may be thinking it is in an hour..
Me: But techically we are correct.
the_electrosushi: good for us...
Me: hehe
Me: how are you?
the_electrosushi: great, last night I was directing the audio for a live event
the_electrosushi: \first time!!
Me: Wow, where was this?
the_electrosushi: in a hotel conference center, the play consisted of a play, it had to be followed by music and sound effects
the_electrosushi: sure.. the play... excuse my english
the_electrosushi: anyway
Me: Oh I see you had to use sound effects and music and follow the visuals?
the_electrosushi: I was in at the console desk managing music and effects, yes, manually following the visuals
the_electrosushi: I was also responsible for renting the gear and setting it up.
the_electrosushi: there were aabout 300 people attending thge evnt
Me: sound like it was exciting, was it?
the_electrosushi: absolutely... it was my first time for all the tasks, I knew in theory but never had the chance of actually do it
the_electrosushi: I set up everything and it all worked at the first shot
Me: Did you have some cue sheets?
the_electrosushi: kind of, the director told me before the rehersal when and how to manage all the effects and gaps
the_electrosushi: so I wrote everything on my note book
the_electrosushi: the all play went flawless
the_electrosushi: really great feeling
Me: I can imagine that notebook was very valuable!
the_electrosushi: oooh yes...
Me: so what equipment did you use for this?
the_electrosushi: and it demonstrated my attitude because when the director came he wasn't expecting to find me ready as I was ... as I told her before that this was my first time
the_electrosushi: equipment:
the_electrosushi: 6 channel mixer, twni CD player, power amp, laptop for sound effects, radio mic, loudspeakers (each divided in 2 components)
Me: well you will be asked again i'm sure
the_electrosushi: actually the radio mic was trying to give a hard time... and also the people using it
the_electrosushi: so I was constantly adjusting the level
Me: What was wrong with the radio mic?
the_electrosushi: I was lucky that I was on top of all the aspects, but I must say I think it was an easily manageable situation
the_electrosushi: it was feedbacking when the speakers were talking without having it close to their mounth
the_electrosushi: was it something I could have adjusted better?
Me: Ah, were the speakers behind the actors?
the_electrosushi: yep
Me: This is the problem
the_electrosushi: aaaaah...
the_electrosushi: experience teaches...
Me: Speakers like this are meant/designed to be in front...
Me: and then you wold run some monitor speakers on the stage for the actors
the_electrosushi: talking about the set up, the stage was a dance floor because the actors were dancing on the level of the crowd and were interacting with it
the_electrosushi: so I thaught that placing the speakers on the same level of the scenography would have helped the viewers to be sitting around the "stage"
Me: Stage sets are usually tricky, in terms of audio, usually something has to be compromised
the_electrosushi: well, as a learning experience, I think I gained a lot and probably by discussing it today it will help eben more
Me: Yes, discussion always works.
Me: I have been involved in lots of activities like this one.
the_electrosushi: my concern was about the rented gear, I couldn't really put my mind in peae thinking if what I requested was enough and right
Russell Brown has joined the conference.
the_electrosushi: Hi Russell
Russell Brown: Hiya, how you doing?
the_electrosushi: fabulous, thanks, sun is shining... how about you?
Russell Brown: sorry, I'm late got my folks up at the mo
Russell Brown: Yeh, weathers great, been working on my boat all day
Russell Brown: where's everyone else?
the_electrosushi: nice... I think the others are 1 hour shifted... as Chris said
Russell Brown: forgotten?
Me: Ben can't make it tonight, he fell down the stairs and is nursing a headache.
Russell Brown: how you finding the course?
Me: I think some of the others think it is an hour later.
the_electrosushi: or maybe US went offline
Me:
Russell Brown: ooh! not the best
Russell Brown: Shall we come back at &?
Russell Brown: 7?
the_electrosushi: the course is really involving myself, I had to complete many questions this week as the previous week I was on holiday
Me: no, we have begun on time already.
Me: and had a great 30 mins so far.
Russell Brown: thats right how was the skiing?
the_electrosushi: but what I find fascinating of this course is that I'm learning each component in depth, in terms of audio components
the_electrosushi: no skiing went to "tropics"
the_electrosushi: Tenerife
Russell Brown: it is good how well you understand different areas eh?
the_electrosushi: I get nostalgic if I think abut it
the_electrosushi: yep, I understand that even if I knew them before, now they are becomenig a lot clearer on their uses
Russell Brown: you're doing DA aren't you?
the_electrosushi: ehm... no the RT
Russell Brown: oh sorry
the_electrosushi: no problem
the_electrosushi: I was telling chris that last night I was helping on the sound on a local event here in town
Russell Brown: very good, what was happening?
the_electrosushi: it was a play for which I was att the console desk, managing the music within the show and adding sound effects from a laptop
the_electrosushi: just dancing actrs
Russell Brown: sound very hi-tech
the_electrosushi: well, the set up was quiet straight forward
Russell Brown: did you get to put any of your new knowledge into practise?
the_electrosushi: as the stage/dance floor was surrounded by the audience
the_electrosushi: absolutely, mostly I tried to look professional for what I could, but certainly I was a victim of inexperience...
the_electrosushi: there was a radio mic used by a speaker who was at the center of the stage, with loudspeakers on its back
Russell Brown: Good to get thrown in at the deep end though
the_electrosushi: and it was feedbacking
Russell Brown: Always does!
the_electrosushi: so chris told me that in fact when using it with the speaker in front of the loudspeakers... that's the result
Russell Brown: Sorry, don't know what that icon was for!
the_electrosushi: ehehe
Me: amusing icon none the least
Russell Brown: what d'you mean?
the_electrosushi: that the speaker should have been standing behing the loudspeakers
the_electrosushi: right cris?
Me: Yes loudspeakers, especially PA speakers are designed for sound propogation efficiency, so they are good at being loud.
Russell Brown: oh rite, I get what you mean the actors (thought you meant speaker as in amp)
Me: Microphones should usually be behind the speakers
the_electrosushi: anyway how about you russell, how are you within the course?
Me: Monitors are different because they sit behind the microphone null point in the polar pattern (in an ideal world)
Russell Brown: Fine, just posted my answers
Russell Brown: didn't get as many done as I'd hoped though
the_electrosushi: you're on the MT course right?
Russell Brown: DA
the_electrosushi: oopsy
Russell Brown: did RT & MT last year
the_electrosushi: any advice for a newbie?
Russell Brown: you seem to know what you're doing, just need lots of time
Russell Brown: something I'm very short of
the_electrosushi: that's for sure... me too
Russell Brown: Ask lots of questions, Chris and Ben really know their stuff
the_electrosushi: but I started mange my time better since the course begun, I basically use any spare time to be on top of my assignments
the_electrosushi: oh yes, I can tell that
Russell Brown: thats the way to do it
Russell Brown: so, where'd electrosushi come from?
the_electrosushi: oohoho... at the time when I was leaving in Germany I had a band called like that, for which I created a user account on yahoo... and here it is now... that band disappeared, but I thoaght the name was "funky"
Russell Brown: sounds good, makes you stand out...
Russell Brown: not just your name
the_electrosushi: it is just a matter of simplyffing things
Russell Brown: I can never think of anything good
the_electrosushi: do you mean in terms of funky names?
the_electrosushi:
Russell Brown: yeh
the_electrosushi: if you ever need ask me, I have few good ones.. like a name I created for a band the oither day was "Selfish and chips"
Me: lol
the_electrosushi: but it all dispappeared in a great laugh
Me: love it
Russell Brown: lol
the_electrosushi: russell, did you manage to do the classical edit... the one producing a radio spot?
Russell Brown: No, wanted to but been very busy at work this week!
Russell Brown: no time at all, how'd you get on?
the_electrosushi: I think I messed up big time with the ducking
Russell Brown: how d'you mean?
Me: Guys I will be back in 10 mins, please do continue.... maybe even listen to the edit.
Russell Brown: d'you have a link?
the_electrosushi: I found a plug in in Logic called Ducker but it wasn't really reacting as I imagined
the_electrosushi: yep... I'l pullit out
Russell Brown: what did you expect to happen?
the_electrosushi: to actually lower the background music sensibly but in fact it never did it so clearly
Russell Brown: what were the settings on the ducker?
the_electrosushi: oh my let me remeber... there was a side chain menu which was giving me some confusion
the_electrosushi: I set this Ducker on a bus of the mix
Russell Brown: what d'you mena?
Russell Brown: mean?
the_electrosushi: and the side chain menu allowed to choose 1 track of the mix
Russell Brown: the side chain lets one channel activate the other
the_electrosushi: so I understood that by choosing the track with the speech on
the_electrosushi: I was getting what I needed
Russell Brown: Try putting your music on one track...
Russell Brown: and creating another for your voice/
Russell Brown: ...
the_electrosushi: ok, so by what you are saying I did it right... yes, in fact I noted best reults when all the music was in 1 track onlyu
Russell Brown: next set the ducker on the music track...
Russell Brown: and side chain the voice track to activate the ducker
the_electrosushi: ok
the_electrosushi: right, I get it, but the Ducker could not be used on 1 of the normal tracks
Russell Brown: depending on the ducker settings (Am guessing it's a compressor?) will set the level of music change
the_electrosushi: it works only on a Bus or main output
Russell Brown: does it not go into an insert though
Russell Brown: on the music channel?
Russell Brown: track
the_electrosushi: and if I choose as side chain the spoken track it works
Russell Brown: best, I think, to ask hris when he returns
Russell Brown: Chris
the_electrosushi: anyway... I'm still trying to puyll out the link
Russell Brown: Sound like you had the right idea
the_electrosushi: it is on the FTP
the_electrosushi: on the Electrosushi folder
Russell Brown: just looking
Russell Brown: It sounds good when you say 'rediscover the old favourites'
the_electrosushi: really? I edited that part
Russell Brown: The music drops well
the_electrosushi: making it slower
the_electrosushi: tried to listen to as much classical radio possible
Russell Brown: It's also good how you've edited the end to finish with the piece's ending. Used crossfades?
the_electrosushi: so I just applied some reverb in the part where my girlfriend explains
the_electrosushi: yes, I applied automation to the cuts
Russell Brown: and you've made it exactly 29 seconds, used any time strech?
the_electrosushi: ehm yes, there is a tool onn Logic called Pitch and Time machine
the_electrosushi: I used that a lot
Russell Brown: Thats how the pros do it
Russell Brown: great tools
the_electrosushi: yes Logic is goo, but on the other hand that tool doesn;t mae it easy if you want to create the effect of a turn table sopping
the_electrosushi: in fact it is impossible
the_electrosushi: I'm still looking for an alternative
Russell Brown: don't work to much with turn tables I'm afraid
the_electrosushi: but in the audio units world there are less alternatives
Russell Brown: what d'you mean by audio units?
the_electrosushi: well, the Mac uses audio units instead of VST
Russell Brown: ah, you on a mac?
the_electrosushi: yes, I even work for them
Russell Brown: very good, I use both
Me: Ok im back
the_electrosushi: so I use the resouces I get
Russell Brown: leaning towards PCs though
the_electrosushi: welcome back
Me: Thank you
Russell Brown: and mac bought emagic didn't it?
Russell Brown: Hi Chris
the_electrosushi: yes they did, so I get Logic PRO as learning tool for this course
Russell Brown: Not bad, not used Logic for years so not to up to date with it
Russell Brown: what d'you do for Mac?
the_electrosushi: sometimes we have people from emagic over for some basic seminars
the_electrosushi: I work in the technical support, I am a OS X specialist so I hace to filter the information from the customers in order to isolate upcoming problems on new releases
Russell Brown: You may be the very person to fix a problems we're having
the_electrosushi: uuuh... work follows me everywhere, tell me I'll see if I can answer or need some research
Russell Brown: One of our eMacs keeps crashing whenever we turn it on. It's a G4 running OSX panther 60gig memory
the_electrosushi: crashing as going to black screen or hangs in there?
Russell Brown: freezes
the_electrosushi: it could be related to the roots of the OS, you can try inserting the OS DVD and turn it on, when you hear the startup chime press and hold C
Russell Brown: ok will give it a bash tommorow, thanks
the_electrosushi: so it will boot from the DVD, once there you'll know if it freezes it's a hardware problem otherwise we have good chances of fixing easily
ncmcmahon has joined the conference.
the_electrosushi: sure
the_electrosushi: Hello Nancy
Russell Brown: Hi, nancy
ncmcmahon: hi there. Happy April Fool
Me:
Russell Brown:
the_electrosushi: same to you.... did you see the April's fool at Moog website?
ncmcmahon: nope. A good one?
the_electrosushi: http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=21066
the_electrosushi: a stupid one
ncmcmahon: very odd indeed
Me: lol
Russell Brown: lol
the_electrosushi: there's even a sound sample
the_electrosushi: did you see any other aril's fool on the net?
Russell Brown: someone was selling an air guitar on ebay
Me: I didn't get to look yet, but I'm hoping some friends point some more out later.
the_electrosushi: lol
Me: lol
Russell Brown: sunburst wirth laser pickups
Russell Brown: with
Russell Brown: and a kick ass sustain
Me: lol
the_electrosushi: a hell of a guitar...
Me: too funny
Russell Brown: have you ever watched the air guitar world championships
the_electrosushi: god no, but I heard of it
Russell Brown: Me too, want to have a look sounds really funny
Me: I have, and goodness me, it is hilarious
the_electrosushi: and I remember thinking: the winner must be so proud...
Russell Brown: is there a site you can get clips on ?
Me: lol
Me: oh yes
the_electrosushi: on youtube there must be some
Me: finding one
Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByFdvhGVzw8 try this
ncmcmahon: some folks should just say no to spandex (espeically when worn with hello kitty)
Me: lol
Russell Brown: thats the best thing I've ever seen, will def show it to all my classes on Monday!
Russell Brown: HAHAHA
the_electrosushi: he looks abit likeJimmy page (in teh old times)
Russell Brown: Sorry, gonna watch it again
Russell Brown: Is that Vai or Satriani
Me: lmao
Me: Sounds a little like Vai, but could be any number of shredders
the_electrosushi: very very funny
Russell Brown: Yeh
Russell Brown: Very good, has been saved to fav list
Me: I'm chuckling here
Russell Brown: Had a listen to electrosushi's classical edit before
Russell Brown: Tis very good
Me: Did you learn some in that sushi?
the_electrosushi: surely I learnt about the ducking effect Ben was talkig about
the_electrosushi: but I also learnt to construct a promo for specific range of listeners
the_electrosushi: someone who wants pureness
the_electrosushi: I used a lot of automation
the_electrosushi: and some reverb in the spoken part
the_electrosushi: what do you think?
Me: grabbing it now
Me: Turning on my NS10s for an examination
the_electrosushi: same as mines
Russell Brown: ar ns10s good we were going to get some
Me: New Lounge Web FM?
the_electrosushi: that's right!
the_electrosushi: oh no.. Blue Lounge
Me: Good job, it certainly conveys the point.
Me: Can I be critical now?
the_electrosushi: shoot
Me: You need a Pop Shield
the_electrosushi: yes, it is popping and could not find a plug in to cover that
Russell Brown: or speak across the mic
the_electrosushi: good to know
Me: What process did you use on the vocal?
the_electrosushi: let's see: de-esser, compression, EQ
the_electrosushi: and modified the tempo of those samples
the_electrosushi: in order to strech them
Me: ahh
Me: this one...
Me: I notice a defect here.. there is some slight repeat..
Me: about 15 secs
Me: noticebale on the word "time" "old TIME"
Me: this is the alogorithm for tempo stretch munching it.
Russell Brown: sounds like chorus
Me: That's it, that's what chorus is of course.
Me: Time shifting one part against another.
Russell Brown: ah
Me: I'm being very critical.
Russell Brown: he did hit it bang on 29 secs though
Me: Yes, sushi you did very well, hope you like the feedback.
Russell Brown: with music editing towards the end to round it off
the_electrosushi: absolutely
the_electrosushi: so that effect is caused by the time shifting?
Me: I say this because things like that only get more obvious when played on other systems, where there might be more compression added etc.. (which is highly probable if broadcasted)
Me: yes it is.
robert Rosequist has joined the conference.
robert Rosequist: Sorry Im late everyone, its palm Sunday
Me: It's a small thing, but I wanted you to know I heard it.
Me: Hello Robert and welcome.
Me: we are getting near to finishing
Me: Glad you made it though
robert Rosequist: I can finally say that everything is up and running
Me: Oh good, have you met the others?
robert Rosequist: in this group, yes
robert Rosequist: not specifically in the music tech seq. though
robert Rosequist: but I have one more week of work off so I will get all caught up hopefully
robert Rosequist: No, thank you.
Yahoo! Messenger: robert Rosequist has declined to join.
the_electrosushi: hey chris, soo, to correct that doubleing of the T, you suggest to to use compression
the_electrosushi: ?
the_electrosushi: ah .. not to use it
Me: Russell and Nancy have already taken that MT nodule last year, they might be a useful resource for you.
Me: Sushi no..
Me: I avoid time stretching like the plague, personally.
Me: Compression will make it MORE obivous.
robert Rosequist has joined the conference.
the_electrosushi: I reckon that after having used time streching the all tone was a bit strange
the_electrosushi: I'll take the adice and avoid it in the future
Me: Very rarely works well on speach, in my opinion
Russell Brown: Sushi was saying there was a problem sidechaining the compressor in Logic
Me: compressor or noise gate?
the_electrosushi: yes, there is this Ducking plug in
the_electrosushi: which works only on Buses or main output
Russell Brown: I assumed it was a compressor
Me: Ducking is usually associated with a noise gate in the inverse mode..
the_electrosushi: ok, so that's what it is based on
Me: i.e. it is OPEN always and a signal IN the sidechain closes it.
the_electrosushi: in fact in order to make it work, from the sidechain menu I had to select the track with the speech
Russell Brown: oh I thought a signal activated a comprssor
Me: you put the ducker (i would imagine) on a stereo track as an insert, which contains the music.
Me: And you take a feed from the vocal track to the sidechain...
Me: so the sidechain listens to the vocal....
Russell Brown: Thats what I said but apparently you can't
Me: when the vocal level comes up the music will duck.... as the sidechain is controlling the ducker.
the_electrosushi: no wait, Chris explanation makes it work... that' s in fact the result I achieved
the_electrosushi: and you can also tell that the release of the ducker is a bit too long
Russell Brown: did you know you can't set up a sidechain in cubase (even in cubase 4)
Me: yes you need to play with the attack and release in order to make it natural.
Me: You can with a C1 comp Russel, did you get that tutorial link?
Russell Brown: whats a c1 comp?
Me: Waves C1 compressor
Me: I thought I sent a link...
Me: might have been dreaming
Russell Brown: what link?
Russell Brown: last week?
Me: lol
Me: didn't you email me asking me about that?
Russell Brown: didn't get an email back (was quite hurt!)
Russell Brown: lol
Me: http://www.audiocourses.com/article1748.html
Me: I definately sent a mail back to you with this link in it,
robert Rosequist has left the conference.
Russell Brown: Oh well, prob my school server, blocks everthing. Cheers for the link
Me: Welcome
Me: OK guys I have to leave... shame as I was just getting going.
Russell Brown: OK Chris, I won't be here next week as me and the wife are away on Holiday
Me: Actually good point me too..
Me: Ill be in a plane back from NYC
Me: follow me at http://twitter.com/audio for that.
Russell Brown: I'll be in a caravan on Millport
the_electrosushi: will Ben be here?
Me: Yes of course
Me: Ben will be running the session.
Me: take care all have a great week.
ncmcmahon: bye all!
Me: remember 17:00 GMT
the_electrosushi: bye
Me:
Me: bye bye
Russell Brown: bye
