b m has joined the conference.

Me: evening
b m: hmmm
Jakob Eils has joined the conference.

Jakob Eils: evenin' friends
b m: hello
Me: Hey there
Me: welcome
Me: have you guys met?
Jakob Eils: nopes
b m: no we haven't
Me: Ben Jakob, Jakb ben
b m: hi jakob!
Jakob Eils: lol hello there m8. Where ya from?
b m: i am in england, and you?
Jakob Eils: denmark here.
the_electrosushi has joined the conference.

b m: ah very nice
the_electrosushi: here I am... Hello people
b m: hello electro
Jakob Eils: hey there
Jakob Eils: where are you from electro?
the_electrosushi: am italian, but I live in Ireland
the_electrosushi: how about you?
Jakob Eils: ahh ok, denmark here
Jakob Eils: how many are we?
Jakob Eils: besides us?
the_electrosushi: ehm.. every sunday is different
Jakob Eils: ohh ok, I thought this was an introduction for the audio for videocourse -
Jakob Eils: guess not?
Me: Jakob.. it is.
Me: this is the corretc place.
the_electrosushi: ah so that's your course right?
Me: we all hang out here, at this time, allcourses
Jakob Eils: ahh i see ok.
Me: So..
Me: Dont be shy.. this might be very new experience for Jakob?
the_electrosushi: sorry I was tiding up a bit the desk
Jakob Eils: yes it is, not quite shure what to expect lol
the_electrosushi: it's a complete mess...anyway
b m: lol
b m: my desk is terrible
the_electrosushi: got quiet bisy during last week...
Me: I have a pretend desk.. my lap.
the_electrosushi: I was perforing my second gig ever
the_electrosushi: it went very very well... and I assaulted the poor sound engineer asking him everything I could
Me: tell us about it
the_electrosushi: I even worked with him laying down (carrying) the equipment
the_electrosushi: and once that it was all up, I joined him behind the desk
the_electrosushi: so I first of all got a very clear picture of all the out-board effects...
the_electrosushi: always heard of them but never saw them in action
the_electrosushi: luckily for him, our set up was very simple
the_electrosushi: but I got a all a lot of advices
the_electrosushi: first by calibrating the EQs
the_electrosushi: first on the PA and tehn for each cannel
the_electrosushi: (of the mixer)
the_electrosushi: then setting limiters
the_electrosushi: the best part actually it was when the guys organisers of the event came to asking for what they should rent as they wouldn't know
the_electrosushi: so I gave the a list of equipment at avery high standard
Me: good for you
the_electrosushi: the only thing is that it went so quickly that I wish I could see it in slow motion now
Me: hmmm
Me: now see, this is where Jakob would have come in useful
the_electrosushi: but that will come with experience I believe
the_electrosushi: yep
the_electrosushi: as engineer?
Me: Yes many of the processes will become normal and very familiar.
Me: With experience
the_electrosushi: well, apologies because I didn't really present myself to Jakob
Me: Well now is your chance
Me:
the_electrosushi: I'm 26years old and work for a Apple, trying to earn this certifiction as it's something I want to learn in order to develop myself professionally
Jakob Eils: No probs
Jakob Eils: what course are you attending?
the_electrosushi: I also have a lil'band and it's the beginning...
the_electrosushi: at the moment recording Techniques
Jakob Eils: ahh ok great
the_electrosushi: once finished I will go into Music Technology
the_electrosushi: if everything goes well...
the_electrosushi: and what's your story?
Jakob Eils: to those who care - I 29 yoa and im a composer and musician. I make music for movies, tv, games etc. and im attending audio for video to improve my audio postproduction skills. I own a studio to make things happen
the_electrosushi: nice, I heard of this studio in denmark which looked really fancy...
the_electrosushi: what was it... ah deltalab
the_electrosushi: do you know it?
the_electrosushi: http://deltalab.dk/
b m: very nice looking studio
Me: Jakob, do you have anything online we can look/listen at?
Jakob Eils: yeah ive seen it but never been there
Jakob Eils: hmm.. - www.myspace.com/theplacemusic or www.myspace.com/ellisvedder
Me: Your band?
Jakob Eils: yes - both of em
Me: I'm listening to The Place
Me: is that your production?
b m: really like the production on the 'i'll be on my way' track
b m: on the ellis/vedder page
Jakob Eils: as a composer yes, not as producer. I produced the ill be on my way
Jakob Eils: thx alot m8
b m: really nice and 'honest' sounding
the_electrosushi: nice work
Me: Check out "The Place" on the other page..
Me: who produced that one Jakob?
Jakob Eils: a danish guy called Søren Mikkelsen
Me: Very good
Jakob Eils: yeah he's a bad %&? mother
b m: haha
Me: He is.
Me: So, any work you have done including visuals?
Me: We cna see?
Jakob Eils: yes i do at www.addmusic.dk but important you have to choose the danish site, cause we havent updated the english for ages
Jakob Eils: we are working on two short movies pt. and we are doing the postpro on one of them, which also is why im here
Me: Nice, in a mastering sense I presume?
b m: or foley?
the_electrosushi: ehehe
Jakob Eils: yes were doing foley as well. What do you mean by mastering sense?
Me: Well post prod can mean different things, depending on what area you work in.
Jakob Eils: ahh yes, i see what you mean.. that as well.
Me: I've listened to some examples on the site.. very good!
Jakob Eils: thank you
Me: maybe you explain what you need exactly from your course here with us.
Me: ?
Me: I will be back in 10 mins, please lead Ben.
b m: ok sure
b m: so jakob what do you want to get out of your course with us
Jakob Eils: hmm I would love to learn more about syncronization, timecodes, formats, you know the works of audio for video I guess.
b m: sure
b m: how are you getting your video delivered to you at present - as DV?
Jakob Eils: im allways unshure how loud i have to make things for them to get through
Jakob Eils: DV?
b m: sorry Digital Video (i.e. MPG, AVI, QT etc)
Jakob Eils: yes exactly.
Jakob Eils: allways in a lousy quality
b m:
Jakob Eils: no timecodes. - the order is, - make it fit
Jakob Eils: lol
the_electrosushi: which program do you normally use for your productions?
Jakob Eils: Nuendo allways
b m: nuendo is pretty good for working with video
Jakob Eils: yeah i really love it so far. I came from cubase, so it wasnt that much a difference, more of an upgrade i guess
Jakob Eils: its a beauty when it comes to audio recording and production
the_electrosushi: I never saw it in action
the_electrosushi: but I trust yoour judgment
b m: it is like a souped up cubase basically electro with better video/surround/network facilities
b m: when i've done audio for video work before we usually get sent a video file with no notes or anything and like you said just get told to 'make it fit'
b m: and then they usually take care of bonding the video and audio together
the_electrosushi: that sounds like a lot fun
Jakob Eils: yeah, basically here too. But usually it all falls back on me if the timing is a little off from start to end.
b m: doh
b m: i've done it before and got it really tight and then exported at 44.1kHz out of habit and the whole thing goes right out of sync!
b m:
b m: oops
Jakob Eils: hahaha, been there as well..
b m: yes really easy mistake
b m: are you mostly dealing in stereo or 5.1?
Jakob Eils: I recently discovered that i recorded in 44 khz and the client wanted 48, dough!!
Jakob Eils: hmm sorry my friend, my timestreching abilitys doesnt go that far!
b m: hehe
Jakob Eils: so far only stereo, but 5.1 is one more thing i was hoping to wise up on here.
Robert Yates has joined the conference.

b m: hey robert
Robert Yates: heya
Jakob Eils: hello
Robert Yates: hi
the_electrosushi: Hello Robert
Robert Yates: ello
b m: robert, we have jakob here tonight who is a new student here
Robert Yates: ah
b m: have your plugins arrived now robert?
Robert Yates: yup
b m: good stuff
Jakob Eils: gear maniac says - What plugs?
b m: hehe
b m: robert is taking the 'mixing and mastering with waves' programme
Jakob Eils: ohh ok, sounds like a great programe
b m: it is a fun course for sure, lots of mixing and some really good source materials
Jakob Eils: so what plugs was it you reffered too?
b m: it is a bundle of waves plugs
Jakob Eils: yeah wavesbundles are sweet.
b m: i think it has C1, RComp, RVerb, Trueverb, L1 etc
b m: from memory
Me: * Waves Renaissance Equalizer: Vintage EG for rich, clear equalization. Double precision resolution.
* Waves Renaissance Compressor: Exceptional compressor with Opto and Electro modes, plus ARC™ auto-release, and L1 style limiter on output. 56-bit precision, dithered to 24-bit output for TDM!
* Waves Renaissance Reverberator: Classic sound and controls for the demands of everyday production, our new reverb is just the new flavor you're looking for!
* S1 Stereo Imager: True Blumlein shuffling, MS/LR processing, four unique stereo-image tools, unequaled anywhere.
* C1 Parametric Compander:

Jakob Eils: i recently purchased the uad duende
Me: back
b m: UAD - nice, some of the UAD compressors are very very good apparently
Jakob Eils: im moved to tears when I wake up the fairchild
b m: lol
Jakob Eils: or the cambridge eq - sweet stuff
b m: some of the software stuff is almost at a level with hardware now
Jakob Eils: yeah almost.. its really tough on the cpu though.. Im only allowed to use like 4 plugs max. b4 the dsp card is maxed out.
b m: really? even at 44.1kHz sample rates?
Jakob Eils: yeah
b m: wow
b m: i guess it's best to farm off the main reverb and compressors to the UAD then and then native for the rest
b m: sorry i mean host not native
Robert Yates: http://www.discodsp.com/highlife/ this tool is good for saving cpu power
Jakob Eils: yeah i think of them as hardware, then i know i only have a fairchid, a cambridge eq, one 1176ln and a trueverb. lol
Jakob Eils: nuendo has its own freeze bility - its really really cool...
b m: yeah i use freeze a lot, especially with amplitube/guitar rig2
b m: also render a lot of waves and then use the offline process history to go back and tweak if i need to
Robert Yates: waves guitar tool rack looks interesting i saw the video promo on my course disks
Robert Yates: reboot, brb.
b m: yeah that is meant to be ok - i really like amplitube 2 a lot
Robert Yates has left the conference.

the_electrosushi: I think they really are good products, but still I don't get the vibes I get from the old tubes...
b m: no you're right, however it is handy to pull up a mesa boogie if you only have fenders at home
the_electrosushi: eheh
b m: but yes a good amp with a good mic in a good room will always sound more 'real'
b m: hey check this out, $1500 computer keyboard with little LED screens under each key - http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/
b m: so everytime you open a different app the keys change to show the shortcuts etc
b m: bit more expensive than stickers
the_electrosushi: uuuuh tasty
Jakob Eils: wow thats a cool keyboard.
the_electrosushi: I guess it won't cost like a normal KB though
b m: no $1500 they reckon
the_electrosushi: and careful when you hit it
b m: and spill coffee on it
the_electrosushi: probably an insurance might come handy
Jakob Eils: dough 1500? your kiddin'?
b m: no that is the price
b m: apparently it costs over $10 per key for the LED screen in each key
b m: before the other circuitry is taken into account
Jakob Eils: lol
b m: this is the cheaper version but it still looks cool
b m: http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus-concept/
b m: scroll down to see how it looks when the buttons change
the_electrosushi: oh well, for smaller wallets, I guess that this would still do http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/
the_electrosushi: the laser keyboard
b m: that looks pretty cool
Jakob Eils: omg i NEED it!!
b m: if you're really broke a nice set of stickers http://www.editorskeys.com/img/products/cubasekeyboard_largenew.jpg
b m: but doesn't look as cool as the others
the_electrosushi: naaa... that's Ryanair style
b m: lol
Jakob Eils: can anyone help me as to how i get started on the course? - im a little confused.
b m: jakob
b m: you will get weekly tasks on the audiocourses forum - you will have a forum for your subject
b m: each week you will tackle questions/practical work
b m: myself or chris will provide you with the URL for the forum
b m: each week in the workshop we also discuss any practicals and you get a chance to show your peers
b m: so you will also hear mixes other people are doing on there course etc
b m: and people will get to see work you are doing etc
Jakob Eils: found it i think
Jakob Eils: there is no week one in there
b m: week one is considered and 'induction' week
b m: getting to know the site and the protocols of the FTP etc
b m: you may want to check the 'school reception' forum also
Jakob Eils: ahh i see, so I can start the week 2 right now?
b m: yes that isn't a problem
b m: in the forums i believe you will be seeing the weekly questions
b m: there are also practicals which may not be in the forum at present - this will mainly involve being supplied a video file and working with audio to place with the video etc
Jakob Eils: where?
b m: they are not in the forums - they will be suppled to you via the FTP
b m: you will of course be informed when they are online to download
Jakob Eils: ahh ok
b m: if we make it available to early you could spend weeks on it
Jakob Eils: lol i see
b m: we of course like to give you a 'time frame' to work with
Jakob Eils: great. whats the timeframe for this week2 ? is there a date i need to be finished? - sry if these are neeb questions, maybe we should discuss this elsewhere?
b m: no it is fine we can cover it quickly
Jakob Eils: k
b m: basically you have 7 days per set of questions
b m: then you would submit your answers/work
b m: it is nice to get the work finished before the workshop
Jakob Eils: ok, where?
Jakob Eils: and this is the workshop? OMG i know nuthin' lol
b m: ok you answer your questions in the forums themself - start a reply to the post and answer the questions there
b m: yes this is the workshop
b m:
Jakob Eils: haha
Jakob Eils: ok great
b m: any problems you can contact myself or chris
b m: also we encourage you all to forge relationships with your fellow students
b m: you've probably all got talents and knowledge that you can share with each other
Robert Yates has joined the conference.

b m: welcome back robert
Robert Yates: thx
Jakob Eils: ok, great. Are there any books that would help me find these answers or are the most of them available on google?
b m: well google is one of your best friends!
b m: and you will probably find 99% of the information in the internet in one place or another
Jakob Eils: sweet
Jakob Eils: yeah ok great.
b m: but there are text books available on the subject - can't remember off the top of my head but i'm sure myself or chris could point you in the right direction
Jakob Eils: has anyone in here done the audio for video course?
the_electrosushi: ehm.. I think it is one of newest course is it?
b m: i think it has been running a year or so at least
the_electrosushi: oopsy daisy
b m: haha
b m: well saying that it is still one of the newer courses i'd think
the_electrosushi: I will probably need some extra hours to complete my assignment for this week... between the band and work it was a tough one
b m: burning the candle at both ends eh?
the_electrosushi: yee.... + this week has also a pratical
the_electrosushi: oh well... I'l stand till the end
b m: ha
the_electrosushi: I must say, this week was all about mastering
the_electrosushi: and never taught it is so huuuge
b m: mastering is a big subject
the_electrosushi: I knew it was big, but all the info I went through were massive
b m: and one that requires years of experience not to say ears of gold!
Jakob Eils: and a real artform all in itself
b m: absolutely
the_electrosushi: absolutely agree
b m: you're dealing with EQ cuts and boosts of fractions of a dB often, and compression ratios that are very low
b m: good speakers are a must
Jakob Eils: i've learned to never master your own mix and the other way round.
the_electrosushi: 1 quick question... the K-system is in actual use by the all industry?
Jakob Eils: at least another set of speakers
b m: having 'seperation' helps
Me: just got back..
b m: i'm not sure anything has been adopted 100% by the entire industry
the_electrosushi: doh
Me: No the K-System is not, it's a proposition to.
the_electrosushi: but.. at least widely regarded?... aaaah that's what I wondered, thanks Chris
b m: was k-system mr katzs work perchance?
Me: A very hard industry to "standardise".
Me: Yes Bob Katz
the_electrosushi: yep
Me: It'a a very nobel quest..
Me: But some people just dig their tunes hideously loud.
the_electrosushi: a very interesting reading, highly recommended
Me: And square waved
Me: OK people I have run again.
Me:
Me: Have a great week you all
the_electrosushi: the loudness race is upon us... but they'll never reach Spinal Taps
Me: lol
Me: too funny
the_electrosushi: same to you all
Me: But this one goes to 11
the_electrosushi: exactly
Jakob Eils: LOL
Jakob Eils: love that movie
Me: See you all soon
b m: anyhow guys i have to shoot - food time
the_electrosushi: see you... have a nice week
b m: goodybye all
b m has left the conference.
