Live Workshop 060507  Reply with quote

the_electrosushi has joined the conference.

Robert Yates has joined the conference.

the_electrosushi: hello people
Me: hey there
the_electrosushi: how's the week?
Me: pretty good here thanks.
Me: and u?
the_electrosushi: Russell says hello... good, very busy but that's the way it goes
Me: Russell is taking a break I believe.
the_electrosushi: sounds like... anyway, I heard about those vocal fruits
Me: Oh you did? How did you hear about it?
the_electrosushi: your podcast, it's fancy idea
the_electrosushi: I was imagining, in stead of a recipy... a tutorial...
the_electrosushi: with a little bit of effort I think it would be possible to create entire lessons on MP3
Me: Yes it is a very good service, I'm working with them to help improve and build their service.
the_electrosushi: maybe you could even get an automatis singer
Me: I also set one up for the Pro News...
Me: Currently is just runs headlines and brief outline, but it could be extended for whole text
Me: http://vocalfruits.com/Audio/pae0f9/
the_electrosushi: yes, thinking of when I try to get concepts in my mind, the fact of hearing them I think it would help
Me: Yes that is one of the ways I learn in fact, through audio. if I hear it I remember it better.
the_electrosushi: yes, just like if a person would explain to you something, less effort than reading it
the_electrosushi: it would be a very cool development
Me: The Pro Audio News feed, will be in Itunes this week.
the_electrosushi: as podacsts?
Me: this will also include tutorials we add.
Me: yes
the_electrosushi: nice one
Me: What do you use for podcasts currently?
the_electrosushi: to be honest not much, apart from yours and a couple of friends I download odd podcasts of things I find interesting
Me: So you download directly each time?
the_electrosushi: I found this video podcast of David Gilmour about his last record
Me: wow, really
the_electrosushi: the odd ones yes
Me: I like dave
Me: Ok because you know with some software it downlaods new episodes for you automatically
the_electrosushi: oh yes, in the video he is filmed in his boat-studio
Me: yes he lives near here
the_electrosushi: iTunes does that as well... the thing is that I don't want my library overcrowded
Me: Sure, i thin you can set iTunes to delete old ones, keeping it clean.
the_electrosushi: true, but as long as I don't really get sucked into something... I'll keep the space usable for recordings
Me: yes.
the_electrosushi:
Me: Robert are you here?
the_electrosushi:
Me: eheh
Me: Ben can't be with us tonight he has some things to do.
the_electrosushi: no worries, anyway.. those nasty timecodes
Me: Did you get on ok>?I was looking over the questions.
the_electrosushi: I found that really nerve reckin.. I think I managed to get the point
the_electrosushi: but I still don't get why there are so many of them
Me: Well, a good point.
Me: I think this can happen with any technology which has differing companies steering things.
the_electrosushi: I know it's a market thingy, butI found that for myself learning those techys concept it is a bit harder
the_electrosushi: luckily the new systems seem to go towards better solutions
Me: Of course it is difficult to appreciate all of them and all of the differences, and it does make you wonder if so many are necessary.
the_electrosushi: yes, unfortunately my experince with MIDI has never been a very easy one
the_electrosushi: also because the situation I found myself into with MIDI were due to a lack of equipment
the_electrosushi: (and knowledge)
Me: MIDI is slightly more difficult to appreciate these days.
the_electrosushi:
Me: MIDI is now completely integrated into the "box"...
Me: We often do not even need to see a MIDI connector anymore..
the_electrosushi: yep, luckily
Me: the MIDI connections are often vritual now.
Me: I can remember "daisy chaining" multiple units together... long long chains.
the_electrosushi: but nonetheless they can be very complicated, is it a matter of signal path right?
the_electrosushi: well digital signal
Guillaume m has joined the conference.

Guillaume m: Hi everyone
Me: Signal Path, is one of the most fundamentally important concepts to get in all of this.
the_electrosushi: Hello there
Me: Regardless of hardward or software Signal Path is the foundation of it all
Me: HiGuillume
Me: And the signal path is hard to visual in your mind, with software only.
the_electrosushi: yes, but in the computer it can be set in a diffrent view... now the computer does it all and unless you really get in to your stuff you will never be bothered
Me: Even though it is the same, one stage feeds the next stage.
Me: Well, I think we should be bothered, becuase it can help us to realise what we could possibly do, how we could possible route the signal.
Me: It oopens the mind to possibility
Me: of configurations....
Me: Does that any sense?
the_electrosushi: absolutely, but the great amopunt of people who starts to do recordings with their garageband will always be limited... unless they get deep on it
Me: Yes I agree...
Me: it takes 9 years to be a good doctor, i guess, why any less for a good engineer?
the_electrosushi: hopefully this will show me the way... at least I want to get that knowlegde and honestly...
the_electrosushi: going through all these questions it makes me dicorver really fascinating things
the_electrosushi: I loved the part about mastering
Me: This is beautiful, this is the educational method we promote,, discovery, and journey.. rather than been told.
the_electrosushi: difficult but loved it
the_electrosushi: I just hope I put enough in my head to carry on well with teh exam
Me: You are doing very well so far, keep your foot on the gas.
the_electrosushi: hell yea
the_electrosushi: eheh
Me: and Guillaume?
Guillaume m: i just started the dance song
Me: oooo great.
Guillaume m: i 'm reading the assignment on the forum
Me: how is it going?
the_electrosushi: which course are taking?
Guillaume m: well, the explanations are very clear
Me: The material is very good to work with..
Guillaume m: but i kinda feel they expect you to master the software you are using (sonar 5 for me), but this isn't the case at all...
Me: it's a good place to start for your own contruction.
Me: No, it is not about matering the software.... not at all
Guillaume m: i'm no a pro at sonar and there are so much things they are mixing for the song
Me: That is what Waves might enjoy you to do...
Me: but WE rather you understand the concepts you are learning not the specific software.
Guillaume m: so do i have to recreate a complete different dance song based on the vocal?
Me: yes that's correct.
Guillaume m: ok
Me: And use anything new, or old.
Me: Just stay in the style of dance...
Me: Show off..
Guillaume m: can i put some new instruments?
Me: yes absolutely
Guillaume m: cool
Me: In fact, forget the book.
Me: to a certain extent
Me: that is just to show you what they did.. now it is time for YOU to do.
the_electrosushi: which course are taking Guillaume?
Guillaume m: yeah but i have first to complete reading what they did for their mixing
Guillaume m: and i 'll do my stuff
Me: Guillauam is taking Production Mixing and Mastering
Me: have you sushi guillaume?
Me: have you met?
the_electrosushi: eheh
Guillaume m: my course is production mixing and mastering
the_electrosushi: it must be rather inetresting, mastering fascinates me
Guillaume m: no i havent, what course are you sushi?
the_electrosushi: recording techniques... starting from teh bottom
Guillaume m: me too
the_electrosushi: do you guys know about "AudioPad"?
Guillaume m: nope
the_electrosushi: well... I found it surfing teh net...http://www.jamespatten.com/audiopad/vid1.php
Me: I have heard of it
the_electrosushi: it's very interesting looking system
the_electrosushi: they are setiing it up at barcellona's university
Me: Love the look of it
Me: http://www.jamespatten.com/audiopad/vid3.php
the_electrosushi: fans of star trek will want one
Guillaume m: ouah it s cool
the_electrosushi: as far as I know they are developing it at barcelona's universtity
the_electrosushi: there must be some serious department over there
the_electrosushi: hey Guillauam, where are you from?
Guillaume m: from france
Guillaume m: and you?
the_electrosushi: I'm Ireland, but I am Italian
the_electrosushi: I curently work for Apple but I have plans to move to spain next year
the_electrosushi: actually... to barcellona
Guillaume m: is it because you like so much audiopad?
the_electrosushi: eheh...maybe... well if I get around I will give it a go
the_electrosushi: what's the weather over there lately.. here it has been exceptionally good
Guillaume m: i live in the south, but it's not so good these days
Guillaume m: and anormally hot
Guillaume m: which softwares are u using guys?
Guillaume m: to record and mix
the_electrosushi: oh well... aybe by next year winter will disappear, which is in a way good so we can make festivals the all year. I use Logic Pro provided by my employer
Guillaume m: and you Chris?
Me: I favourite is SoundScape, if I have a choice..
Me: but i have used ProTools, Cubase, Nuendo also a lot.
Me: http://www.sydec.be/ = SoundScape
Guillaume m: i have an issue with sonar and the waves track, can i ask you about it?
Me: Yes, not sure how much I'll be, but ask.
Guillaume m: when i launch the track on sonar, the sound is good for 10 seconds, then it starts to decrease automatically, with some weird noises, so i have to stop it, and lauch it again
the_electrosushi: processor under lots of pressure?
Guillaume m: so i cant hear it entirelly without stopping it every 10 seconds
Guillaume m: yes i think so
Guillaume m: there are tons of plugins
the_electrosushi: maybe some more RAM would help
Guillaume m: but even when i rendered it in a audio file, the created wav file had the same issue!!
Guillaume m: yeah but i m using a laptop
Me: I think rendering it just render the problem.
the_electrosushi: that's probably because by bouncing it, the computer went in overload and messed up
Guillaume m: probably...but i never experienced this with sonar before
Guillaume m: and i used lot of plugins and processors
the_electrosushi: yes, there is function which allows you to create an audio track from the virtual track
the_electrosushi: does it happen on oter computers?
Guillaume m: i didnt try, i only have a laptop
Me: What specification is your machine?
Guillaume m: it is intel pentium m processor 740, 1gb ram
Me: Trying to recall what the min spec it..
the_electrosushi: does it happen with any project you have?
Guillaume m: no, it never happened before, but i wasnt using the waves plugins
Me: This certainly sounds like an overload issue.
Guillaume m: and for my personal project, i prefer FL studio now
the_electrosushi: I think it is a matter of overload too
Guillaume m: ok thanks
the_electrosushi: just about that...
the_electrosushi: I installed Linux on acompter the other day
the_electrosushi: and downloaded one DAW for Linux
Me: Ah..
the_electrosushi: well you hav to consider that it is all free
Me: how was it~?
the_electrosushi: well it really looks like if Linux DAWs are really catching up with the pro stuff
the_electrosushi: apart from Audacity (which I hate)
the_electrosushi: this one had a very nice interface and all was so fluid in the processes
the_electrosushi: this is the one I used http://ardour.org/
Me: sounds great...and interesting.
Me: Yes I thought it might be
the_electrosushi: I must say that I was very surprise
the_electrosushi: d
the_electrosushi: it ran very well on amchine that nowadays you can run hardly iTunes and few other apps
the_electrosushi: with Mac OS X
Me: really..
Guillaume m: is a mac better for audio?
the_electrosushi: oooh... don't get chris started...
the_electrosushi: eheh
Me:
the_electrosushi: it's a matter of what you like better
the_electrosushi: if you very familiar with windows you should stick with that
Me: Absolutely
Guillaume m: i had a mac before, an old applebook
Guillaume m: but not for doing music
the_electrosushi: in my personal taste, windows is a bit too mucch processing everything, but I know that mac system quiet well so I know how to work it better
the_electrosushi: now all the major DAW makers are for both platforms,, few exceotions
the_electrosushi: but the main point that we will probably see happen is that Linux is a all system completely free of charge
Guillaume m: are u using linux?
the_electrosushi: and if such a system does everything that mac and windows do... oh well...
the_electrosushi: no I run on Mac
the_electrosushi: working there I have some benefits... so
Me: They give you free gear
Me: hehe
Me: I'll be back in 10 mins guys, can you talk between yourselved fora bit.
the_electrosushi: ok
Guillaume m: ok
the_electrosushi: so, what's your interest for music coming from?
the_electrosushi: band, movie making...?
Guillaume m: i like to compose stuff with my keyboard and create mix with my computer
Guillaume m: no i dont play in a band
the_electrosushi: nice, I do that too, but I am no good pianist
Guillaume m: i reaally want to learn how to create good mixes
Guillaume m: to improve my own stuff i mean
Guillaume m: me neither
the_electrosushi: I hope you'll find tips along with the course
Guillaume m: thats why midi is great
the_electrosushi: yes, that fact editing anything you do is nice...
Guillaume m: so you want to become a sound engineer?
the_electrosushi: that's the plan
Guillaume m: cool, did u just begin the course?
the_electrosushi: I have friends working in the movies and I'd love to become a pro
the_electrosushi: I'm on the third month now
the_electrosushi: exam in 1 month
Guillaume m: ok
Guillaume m: ahh you have exams too?
the_electrosushi: yes... for which I will have to travel for a good bit
the_electrosushi: but I am really putting my head down on this one
Guillaume m: is it your first exam?
the_electrosushi: yep
Guillaume m: good luck
the_electrosushi: there will be 2... cheers
the_electrosushi: today I had singer reharsing in my studio here... such a nice practice
Guillaume m: where is your studio?
the_electrosushi: well, it's my own room, I call it Pink Room (guess why)... and I have a good amount of equipment
the_electrosushi: what keyboards do you play on your plug-ins?
Guillaume m: i have a really good roland keyboard ( which i have to sell, too big for my room...), so i m using a midi emu keyboard
Guillaume m: with bosendorfer patch
Guillaume m: bosendorfer sounds awesome
the_electrosushi: aah.. a super highly EQed piano right?
Guillaume m: yeah right
Guillaume m: but id like to figure out how to invert the bass and treble
Guillaume m: the treble is always on the left side...i d like to switch it
the_electrosushi: cool... did you try using the EQ on sonar?...aah the
Guillaume m: no i didnt
the_electrosushi: that.. you mean the bass is on the left channel and right on the right channel, right?
Guillaume m: i m using kontakt to load the bosendorfer patch
the_electrosushi: sorry, the highs on the right
Guillaume m: no the bass is on the right channel, i d like to put it on the left and the treble on the right, to sound more natural
Guillaume m: but i still havenet figured that out...and kontakt is not easy to use either...
the_electrosushi: ok, got it, I was thinking of a technicque to record the piano... on which you place 2 mics, one the right side of the dsrtings and one on the left (where the highs are)
the_electrosushi: so you get a stereo image of the piano
Guillaume m: yes exactly
Guillaume m: i dont record my keybaord with mics
the_electrosushi: I don't think you realy need that
the_electrosushi: hmm.. it's interesting this thing of teh stereo piano... are you sure it's not listed on the feautres of your plug in?
the_electrosushi: I found it on theproduct description: true repedalling and two different microphone positions (close and ambient) for ultimate ambience control...
Guillaume m: yeah but i tried lot of different patches, but it always was this way...
the_electrosushi: It doesn't mention the stereo capabilities
Guillaume m: if you want good piano patch, try it out, it s really good
the_electrosushi: it certainly looks promising, but I think I would make nno good avertisment of the product
the_electrosushi: I work more with synths
the_electrosushi: more in tweaking of their levels
Guillaume m: which synths?
the_electrosushi: I like the vintage ones... moog arp ect
Guillaume m: you are programming some sounds with synth?
the_electrosushi: I made few, but I use them for my knowlegde (so far)
Me: how you guys doing?
the_electrosushi: I mostly like the sound of old synths, they create some really authentic effects
the_electrosushi: not bad... chit-chatting
the_electrosushi: and especially I am a fan of sound syrhesis rather than sampling
the_electrosushi: I see the old synths as a vintage guitar... they have their own sounds
Guillaume m: i heard a song the other day, with electric guitars, it sounded so real, but it was actually make with a synth
Guillaume m: amazing
the_electrosushi: true, in Logic, there is plug in which is made properly to imitate a guitar, it can work, but... I like the guitar...
the_electrosushi: especially in a live situation, making the guitar sound on a keyboard makes me feel misplaced
Guillaume m: there is amplitube for the guitar emulator, but the guy recreated a guitar sound, with the 3osc from Fl studio
the_electrosushi: you mean a synth with 3 oscillators?
Guillaume m: yep
the_electrosushi: I'd love to hear the result
Guillaume m: do u have fl studio?
Guillaume m: i can send you the file
the_electrosushi: nope... that's a PC only DAW
Guillaume m: i can render it if you want, and send you a mp3 result
the_electrosushi: I accept that... if you have access to the FTP, you can put it on my folder
the_electrosushi: anyway... hey chris what's up with the americans? did they finish the course?
Me: No not yet, work is carrying on.
Me: robert though is in, but not in?
the_electrosushi: pity they are not showing up... oh yes it's true I see him in too
Me: So any plans for this week guys?
the_electrosushi: well, this week looks like it is going to a little bit less filled.. so I will try to look to my mastering practice
the_electrosushi: I use an application for Mastering only, and it helps a lot reminding of all the info that the mastering must carry
Guillaume m: sushi where can i find your folder?
the_electrosushi: and it has some really nice plug ins with mastering only in mind
the_electrosushi: ehm.. the FTP of audiocourses, the folder is called Electrosushi
the_electrosushi: hey chirs if you heard the 24 tracks mix I did, have you got any comment on it?
the_electrosushi: thanks Guillaum
Guillaume m: ure welcome
Me: I still need to do that for you.. i will listen again after this.. (remind me)
Me: i'll do it after dinner
the_electrosushi: cool
Guillaume m: i m gonna have to go
the_electrosushi: ok, thanks again, I'll listen to it
Guillaume m: alright, tell me about this next week
Me: Take care people. Have agreat week.
Guillaume m: i dont have internet at home yet
the_electrosushi: you too, have a nice week
Guillaume m: chris
Guillaume m: when do you need the assignment?
Me: Well, we usually give a week.
Me: Ben will be checking yours out.
the_electrosushi: take care, bye
Guillaume m: bye see you next week
Me: Might be good to have ready for the workshop next week,
Me: bye
