Soundcard matter?  Reply with quote

I don't see what a soundcard really does....

Is it essential for good sounding quality stuff, my buddy was saying you only need like a 50 dollar one?

A soundcard converts analog electrical signals into digital pulses using A/D (Analogue to digital) converters and back again using D/A converters.

In soundcards you generally pay more for better quality converters aswell as internal mic pre-amps etc.

youre friend is right, you could just use a $50 soundcard, but it would sound pretty poor. this is why people pay $5000+ for apogee interfaces. you wont walk into Abbey Road studios to find a $50 card put it that way.

Decide on the channel count you need, whether you need built in pre-amps and then buy the best you can afford (within reason). dont be too worried about sample rates etc. you will never need to record above 24bit 48khz. however do make sure it is 24bit. also decide whether you want firewire, USB, or PCIe etc.

Well I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about this

I have a pretty good mic and a fast track pro, and i dunno the sound still sounds like a lil screwy someone said it's probably my seound card, I'm willing to pay like 300 dollars on a sound card if that will sound any good? I'm really new to the whole music thing, don't know much about anything yet.

Fast Track Pro  Reply with quote

The Fast Track Pro isnt a bad sound card at all for its price. Yes, it obviously doesnt equal up to a Drawmer pre and Apogee AD/DA but it's decent for a project studio/portable setup. A lot of factors come into play when recording and mixing..the room..the monitors..the mic..the artist..your ears.. You could probably try borrowing/renting out a higher priced sound card and see if it really makes a difference. If it doesnt, then maybe you need to look into the other factors.
