Live Workshop 130507  Reply with quote

Guillaume m: sorry guys
b m: no problems
the_electrosushi: hey guillaum, I was sayin that I listen o that track you sent me
Robert Yates has joined the conference.

Robert Yates: howdy
the_electrosushi: and .. to my ear, it sounds like guitar, but it is not one...
Guillaume m: do u like it?
b m: hi robert
Guillaume m: yes...
the_electrosushi: hello
Guillaume m: hi
Robert Yates: can i hear that fl guitar thing also?
Guillaume m: i ll send it to you
the_electrosushi: there you go
the_electrosushi: I sent it already... pardon my speed
Robert Yates: got it now
Guillaume m: ok
Robert Yates: hm not bad
the_electrosushi: do you know which synth was used?
the_electrosushi: hey chris and ben, would like to hear it also?
b m: yes!
Guillaume m: it was 3 osc
the_electrosushi: I'll send it
Guillaume m: but with tons of effects
b m: ok
Guillaume m: i mean the name is "3 osc"
b m: created with 3osc synth also?
the_electrosushi: there is a preset also on the Moog Little Phatty which works quiet nicely as guitar sound
Guillaume m: yes, a lot of 3 osc are running at the same time, with some effects
b m: sounds pretty good on the whole, only time it sounds unrealistic is the sustained powerchords IMO
Guillaume m: hey, chris and ben, have u listened to the one only remix i sent you
b m: guillaume - we will all have a listen in the workshop in a bit
b m: to your mix
Guillaume m: ok
b m: did you create this synth patch yourself guillaume?
Guillaume m: yes, i created all synth
b m: very good
b m: what waveforms did you use for the oscs?
Guillaume m: unfortunately there are no names on it...it is a N waveform for the first osc
Guillaume m: and a reverse N for the 2 other oscs
b m: i presume they are sawtooth or similiar waveforms
b m: or triangle
Guillaume m: where can i have these waveforms names?
Robert Yates: i have the fl studio bible i will have a look in it, maybe they are named there
b m: usually the synth tells you but i don't know Fruity Loops (i presume that is what you mean by FL)
Guillaume m: yes fruity loops is the former name of FL studio
b m: i imagine that if the wave is called N then it is a saw
b m: as a N looks a little like a Saw waveform
Robert Yates: they are: since, triangle, square, saw, TB303 saw, noise and custom
Guillaume m: i got it, it was a rounded saw for the first one
Robert Yates: since must be a typo for sine
b m: here is a saw wave
b m: http://www.aleph.co.jp/~takeda/radio/img/4069saw.jpg
b m: looks like a N
Guillaume m: and a saw for the 2 others
b m: yes i've never seen a since wave!
the_electrosushi: and rectagular too right?
Robert Yates: the 4th one is a saw, that looks like an N
b m: electro - do you mean a square wave?
Guillaume m: i dont really know how this synth is working, i m just switching the knobs until i find a sound i like
the_electrosushi: yes, tending to rectagular, I have aplug-in of teh orginal minimoog... and it is there
b m: i really like saw waves myself
the_electrosushi: I am more of a square tyoe
the_electrosushi: type
b m: get two of them going together, detune one by about +/- 9 cents and you get a nce evil sound
b m: square waves can be fun
the_electrosushi: I like their roundness in the sound
the_electrosushi: the all air they give to the sound
Robert Yates: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/yates/3osc.JPG
b m: yes, they have the low end of the sine but more definition and warmth as you say
Guillaume m: thanks yates
Robert Yates:
b m: quick change of subject
b m: anyone watch the football today?
Robert Yates: football?
b m: hehe
b m: you not into football robert?
Guillaume m: i saw manchester chelsea
Robert Yates: nope
b m: last day of the season in the premiership today
Robert Yates: means nothing to me hehe
b m: no more football til august
Me: means a day for celebration
b m: noooooooooo
the_electrosushi: I am sill celebrating since the last world cup
Guillaume m: yeah there's too much on the tv
b m: there is not enough!!!
b m:
Me: Im loving this a Live Workshop where ben is totally out numbered
Guillaume m: common you shouldn't have won this worldcup!
Me: loving it big time
b m: haha
the_electrosushi:
Guillaume m: and btw, materazzi totally deserved the headbutt
the_electrosushi: should france have won it?
Me: lol
b m: lol
Guillaume m: yeah we played better and fair
Me: I must admit I enjoyed the butt
b m: france are a team in decline, and italy are corrupt at grassroots level
Me: He'd have got butted in rugby for being such a nonce for sure.
Guillaume m: me too actually, i was watching in a very crowdy place, and it was so funny
the_electrosushi: I think that the last world cup was the swan song for italy
Guillaume m: but i didnt laugh when we lost the penalties
b m: shame as i like the tactical sie of italian football, big fan of del piero also
Me: It's a bloody game though right, people take it far to seriously for me.
Guillaume m: where are u from ben?
b m: i'm from england
b m: south west england
Robert Yates: i went to an irish pub yesterday and there were some guys kickin a round thing about on the tvs, and posters everywhere about the pub being a place to watch the champion league or something
Guillaume m: u too chris?
b m: champions league final!!!! woo hoo!!!! i'm a liverpool supporter
Robert Yates: hehe
b m: get to play milan AGAIN!
Robert Yates: POSH !
Me: I'm from cornwall, Celtic blood. I live in england surrounded by english people currently.
b m: the mighty posh eh
Robert Yates: hihi
b m: yeah england sucks eh?
Me: No england doesnt suck, but it's too small for the amount of people.
Robert Yates: like a dyson
the_electrosushi: beckham does...
Me: Apparently
b m: lol
Me: trouble is with england everyon thinks they are a traffic warden
the_electrosushi: honestly, I am not abig fan of football, ut watch in a macth in italy makes me nercous
the_electrosushi: nervous... coz it's like commedy
b m: hehe
the_electrosushi: at least in UK a match is a match
b m: i went to the venice stadium when i was there, very run down
Robert Yates:
Me: I lived next to san siro for a while, literally could see it from balcony. Football nights were circus like.
the_electrosushi: eheh... they say that it shakes after the first 100 people arrive
b m: sorry robert lol
Robert Yates:
Me: ok lets close it
Me: football sucks
Me: now lets move on
Robert Yates: agreed
b m:
Robert Yates: high five
Robert Yates: hehe
Me: lol to funny
Guillaume m: is there a tool to determine each frequencies for every instruments in sonar for example?
Guillaume m: or any other soft
the_electrosushi: do you mean like an oscilloscope?
b m: you could use spectral analysis
Robert Yates: use a spectral analysis tool to get an average idea
b m: but any sound other than a sine wave will put out more than on frequency
b m: harmonics etc
Guillaume m: yeah but some value on it, to use the EQ better
Robert Yates: http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Category_Analysis/
Robert Yates: flstudio 7 has one built in, EQ2, spectral analysis and EQ in one
Guillaume m: but the one in EQ 2 is not very good...
Robert Yates: i thought it was ok
the_electrosushi: in logic pro there is also a similar plug in
Guillaume m: i d like to have some values on it
b m: you can just use an eq with an adjustable freq and Q and sweep to find freqs also
Guillaume m: this is the biggest problem i have with lots of instruments...finding the best frequencies with an EQ to save some headroom
Guillaume m: is it a plugin yates?
Robert Yates: yup
b m: the tactc i use to mix is to identify which 'window' of frequencies i wish each instrument to occupy
b m: and then carve them out with EQ to suit
Guillaume m: are u using it?
Robert Yates: yup, there is a free lite version but i brought the pro one
Guillaume m: but with which plugin are you identifying the window of frequencies for each instruments?
Guillaume m: is it good?
b m: no you decide this 'in your head;
Guillaume m: better than EQ 2?
Guillaume m: ok
Robert Yates: the good thing with FreqAnalsyt is you can make the window transparent then layer up the tool on all instructments and see where the overlaps in your mix are, good stuff.
b m: you could try some ear training software
Guillaume m: but sometimes, there are some frequenicies in the lower or higher, which you cant hear but add some muddy effect
b m: honestly with enough pratice you can pick them out 'by ear'
b m: practice
Robert Yates: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/yates/austria/ some pics of austria
Robert Yates: some are a stupidly high res though
b m: should have stayed in peterborough mate
Robert Yates: no way
b m: haha, looks awesome
Robert Yates: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/yates/austria/DSCF0085.JPG i dont get that view from my desk in peterborough
b m: wow
the_electrosushi: the place is still covered with snow
Robert Yates: hehehe the pics are old
Robert Yates: that was january 2006
the_electrosushi: ok then
the_electrosushi: eheh
b m: where i live it never snows, haven't seen proper snow for years
Robert Yates: its white cold stuff ben
b m: haha
b m: thanks for the update
Robert Yates: ur welcome
Robert Yates: dont be fooled by its prettyness, its evil
Robert Yates: sounds like my ex
b m: the town looks very pretty
Robert Yates:
b m: ha, compare it to where i live - http://www.falmouth.tv/webcam.php
b m: no competition
Robert Yates: heheh
Guillaume m: rainy
b m: yup
Robert Yates: mm jah
b m: that was 10mins ago
b m: still raining
Robert Yates: and how is it now?
Robert Yates: oh
b m: yeah, exactly like in the picture
Robert Yates: thrilling
b m: yup, lots to look at there
Robert Yates: the boats didnt even move?
b m: hehe
b m: it is actually the worlds 2nd largest natural harbour
b m: or 2nd deepest
b m: can't remember
Robert Yates: heh
Guillaume m: whre do u live robert?
Robert Yates: in a small village called Hallein about 10minutes south of Salzburg in austria
Guillaume m: i have a friend who live there
Robert Yates: i was born in england, i moved to austria 2years ago
Guillaume m: are u working there?
Robert Yates: yup, for Sony, im a computer cracker turned "good" and work on copy protection system and software reverse engineering
Guillaume m: u turned good huh?
Robert Yates: sure, i am a good boy, thats what i tell my mum
Guillaume m: haha
Guillaume m: u know my Fl studio licensed has expired today...
b m: lol
Robert Yates: *g*
Guillaume m: i cant use it anymore!!
Guillaume m: u have to help me
Robert Yates: haha
b m: i think it is about time we have a listen to guillaumes remix
Robert Yates: fl studio licenses dont expire
Robert Yates: lets listen to some toooons
b m: you put it onto the FTP - do you have the address?
Guillaume m: yes hlod on a sec
b m: cool
Robert Yates: mine is here, http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/Week%202%20-%20Dance%20Music%20Production/One%20And%20Only%20(yates%20remix_v3).mp3
Robert Yates: its really awefull though
b m: ok listening now
Guillaume m: ...
Guillaume m: u can download it here
the_electrosushi: what was this a re-mix?
Guillaume m: yes this is a remix of a dance song
b m: a remix of a remix!
b m: re-re-mix
b m: ?
Guillaume m: no just a remix i think
b m: hehehe
Guillaume m: the original song is one and only
Guillaume m: i hate it so much!!!
the_electrosushi: whwh
b m: so you added the synth bass line and the drum part?
the_electrosushi: eheh
Robert Yates: everything is new, i only used the vocals
b m: so how do you feel about the mix?
Robert Yates: i also hate the original, its cheesey
b m: yes it is quite cheesy!
b m: what does the really distorted male voice say?
Robert Yates: hardstyle
b m: ah ok
Robert Yates: and sub concious terror
Robert Yates: hehe
the_electrosushi: maybe if you play it bacward it hols a message
b m: heh
the_electrosushi: just kidding
Robert Yates:
Guillaume m: the male voice is cool
Robert Yates: takes about 10minutes to render the mp3 in fl studio, dont know why
b m: sorry guys, i got those 2 files mixed up - i'm listening to guillaumes now, heard yates first
b m:
Robert Yates: i cant find guillanmes one
Guillaume m:..
b m: in his folder on FTP
Robert Yates: if i click the link it says anonymous loggins not allowed, and when i log into ftp.audiocourses.com i dont see the folder
Robert Yates: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/ isnt there
b m: username part3
Robert Yates: oh
b m: password xxxxx
Guillaume m: how many ftp servers are there?
Robert Yates: i have never seen this ftp before
Me: There is confusion, due to two courses here, each has a unique one.
b m: 2
Me: We will consolidate them into one.
Me: Makes most sense
Guillaume m: ok
Me: part3 , use that one.
Robert Yates: downloading
Jakob Eils has joined the conference.

Jakob Eils: Evenin'all
b m: hey jakob
Robert Yates: hi
Jakob Eils: sry im late,
the_electrosushi: hello there
Me: yo jakob
Guillaume m: hello
Jakob Eils: all well? Any1 exploded lately?
Me: ha!
b m: <bang>
Jakob Eils: I almost did this week solving these puzzles
Jakob Eils: anyone done Audio for Video?
Me: No these guys haven't Jakob
Robert Yates: your mix is great gmz great sounds
Guillaume m: thanks
Jakob Eils: ok cool
Me: They have been discussing a couple of mixes
Robert Yates: you have done something to the vocals also i think?
Jakob Eils: ahh ok, can I hear?
Guillaume m: yeah i used fruity slicer
Guillaume m: and i switched the harmonic and lead vocals
b m: http://www.audiocourses.com/ACPMM01/Week%202%20-%20Dance%20Music%20Production/One%20And%20Only%20(yates%20remix_v3).mp3
Robert Yates: ah ! fuckin great
b m: roberts mix
Robert Yates: maybe you could send me your flp file and i could learn from it
Guillaume m: the fl file is very small, but i have got all the wave files and plugins as well...
Robert Yates: hm
Robert Yates: fl studio can produce a zip package i think
Robert Yates: dun know if thats big
Guillaume m: i ll try
Me: OK next week guys, I was wonderinf if we should have an "audio" conference for a change.
Robert Yates: the vocal harmonic changes make the sound a lot better, its not so cheesey now
Robert Yates: -sound+song
Robert Yates: audio conference?
the_electrosushi: oh yes I'm up for it
Me: yes rather than text as in here
Robert Yates: oh with audio
Robert Yates:
Guillaume m: ok
Me: Everyone fancy that?
the_electrosushi: yep
Guillaume m: what is going to be different?
Robert Yates: i dont wanna hear the football on the tv in the background of bens stream
Me: lol
Guillaume m: ah u mean that
the_electrosushi: ehehe
Me: The difference is we talk rather than type
b m: hehe
Me: but we can type urls and difficult concepts too. If needed
Me: Paste images etc.
Guillaume m: ahhhhhh ok
Robert Yates: exchange porn, great
b m: lol
Guillaume m: i thought u wanted to chat about audio instead of football
Me: well that would be refreshing
Robert Yates: thats what i thought also
Robert Yates: heheh
Me: We all need skype installed and working
Robert Yates: anyway we have listen to the songs now arent u guys suppose to say something about them
Me: So just to finish this bit.
Me: Please ensure you have skype installed (it;s free) and ready to go.
Guillaume m: my pseudo is kalzakath88
Guillaume m: sorry kalzakath_88
Me: im "audiocourses" please add me.
Guillaume m: ok
Jakob Eils: NP
Me: Be good to hear you all
the_electrosushi: and headphones handy or there is the risk of some serious feedback
Me: good point
Me: don't want feedback, even non serious feedback
Guillaume m: u know i have difficulties to understand english accent
Me: We can charge you extra for the full immersion english lessons
Robert Yates: hä
Guillaume m: u re a good salesman chris
Me: lol
the_electrosushi: 1 week crush coruse?
Me: lol
Me: Actually I can speak slowely sometimes
Guillaume m: good
Jakob Eils: Are there any "hands On" projects for the audio for video course?
Me: sushi, do you know some french?
Me: Jakob yes, there will be.
the_electrosushi: ehm.. no I have a lack in french
Me: I have an animation I want a sound track doing for
Guillaume m: robert, did u start the rnb stuff?
Guillaume m: r n b
the_electrosushi: but I'm fine with italian, spanish or german
Robert Yates: not yet
Me: Jakob, remind me about this project this weke please. Hopefully I'll have it ready later tonight or tomorrow.
the_electrosushi: hey chris , could you also give me some feedback on my work... just need to know I am going on the right direction...
Guillaume m: so do you have any suggestions for the one only remixes ?
Me: yes I wil.
b m: yes, i can give you both a quick 'critique' now
Jakob Eils: great, I will sounds perfexct.
Me: Guilliame maybe we can do that together later or tomorrow evening.
b m: but i'd also like to email you both a longer critique
Me: i mean sushi, sorry.
Robert Yates: cool
b m: but in short, from a critical engineering point of view
Guillaume m: cool, but i dont have internet at home yet, i ll be connected beginnig of this week
the_electrosushi: ok, I'll keep my messenger open
b m: Yates: mix is low-mid heavy, this comes out as sounding 'muddy'
Jakob Eils: hate to ask again but do you know by now if June 8 is ok for my final exam?
Me: Monitor issues ben?
b m: i'd guess you need to tighten up the kick/bass relationship
b m: sounds heavy around 300-500Hz
Me: Jokob, should be yes, no reason why not, especially as it is now electronic.
b m: kick at times is overwhelmed by other sounds - kick is obviously massively important in this style of music
b m: vocal is loud and clear throughout though
b m: although a bit harsh around 2-3k
Me: I have to leave now good people.
b m: guillaume - nice choice of sounds, however the main 'trance' synth sound at times conflicts with the vocal
Robert Yates: ciao chris
Me: Have a great week, and remind me if you need something.
b m: bye chris
Guillaume m: see you chris
the_electrosushi: ok then... ciao ciao
b m: also there is not much low end on this track other than the kick which sounds more prominent over 100Hz than in the real sub frequencies
b m: with dance music you quite often want the kick punching through at 60-90Hz
Guillaume m: do u mean the trance synth in the chorus?
b m: especially for club mixes
Robert Yates: yeh with my bass box up full i dont get much
b m: yes in the chorus
Guillaume m: ok
b m: i'd either consider EQ-ing the trance synth with a dip in the 1-3kHz rea
b m: area
Robert Yates: normal tracks would have the neighbours at my door in seconds
b m: or you could even examing using ducking compression on the synths with the vocal as the trigger
Guillaume m: lol
Guillaume m: what is ducking compression?
b m: ducking compression uses something called a sidechain
b m: a sidechain is an alternative input
b m: so you would send the synth to a compressor
b m: and you would send the vocal to the sidechain input
b m: the threshold value on the compressor would apply to the vocal (sidechain input)
b m: so when the vocal exceeds the threshold, the compression starts on the synth
Guillaume m: cool
Guillaume m: how can i do that
b m: like when a DJ speaks on radio and the song in the background gets quieter
Robert Yates: this is something which also interests me but i havent found a way to do side-chaining in fl studio
b m: you need to use a compressor with a sidechain input
b m: i don't know if it is possible in FL
Guillaume m: like waves C1compressor?
b m: is possible in cubase, pro tools, sonar ec
b m: yes waves C1 will do the job
Robert Yates: fl studio's compressor is basic
b m: in fact i wrote a tutorial on sidechain compression and gating on the audiocourses site
b m: let me find the address
Guillaume m: btw ben
b m: yup
b m: Sidechain Gating with C1: http://www.audiocourses.com/article1748.html
Guillaume m: the waves plugins they are using in the book are not the same that we had to buy from the educational waves bundle
b m: Sidechain Compression with C1:http://www.audiocourses.com/article1752.html
b m: what is different?
Guillaume m: the plugins are different
b m: do you mean there are plugins different or that the controls are different
b m: ?
b m: plugins missing i mean
Guillaume m: they use Q 10 in the book, but the in the bundle it s renaissance compressor
Robert Yates: fruity peak controller seems to turn a track into just a siginal output
b m: hmm, weird
Guillaume m: well it doesnt matter but it s kinda weird...
Robert Yates: yes this is true
b m: they might have discontinued Q10 in the educational bundle
b m: i'll speak to chris about this and see what the situation is
Robert Yates: i brought the bundle also but everything is not included
b m: hmmmm, that is weird
Robert Yates: you can get the C1 demo off the waves cd with the book
Robert Yates: but mine expired already
b m: if one or both of you could email me with details of what is wrong/missing etc then myself and chris can investigate
b m: obviously we don't have control over what waves put in their bundles
b m: from time to time that chage the content of some bundles
Robert Yates: which is why i havent done anything lately, i need to find out what i really need and buy it, but i already spent too much money so i will have to do something else
b m: but i will investigate this for you
b m: hehe
Guillaume m: ok, but you know they re using lots of different plugins like 2 tap delays etc, which are not included in the package...
Robert Yates: i will document what changes i see
b m: ok, if you could put this in an email i'll try to get to the bottom of this - did you buy the bundles from the waves site directly?
Robert Yates: yup musican bundles 1 and 2 from the link in the forum
Guillaume m: i bought the educational bundle with 5 plugins in it
Robert Yates: hm
the_electrosushi: well folks... dinner is served
b m: yes i must go also, please send me emails with the waves stuff and i will see what i can do
Robert Yates: educational bundle? thats just the book no?
Jakob Eils has left the conference.

b m: i thought the bundle that went with the book was a seperate bundle, but they may have changed the content of the bundle since the book was pusblished (it is a couple of years old)
Guillaume m: no they ve changed musician bundle link into educational bundle
Guillaume m: for audiocourses
the_electrosushi: bye everyone, have a nice week
b m: bye electro
Guillaume m: yeah but the latest edition of the book is 2005 i guess
Robert Yates: ciao electro
Robert Yates: ok well im very confused
b m: ok, well send myself and chris the email with details and we will see what we can do
b m: yes, it is confusing
Robert Yates: its not clear what to buy, they also offer additional books
Guillaume m: did you buy the book?
Robert Yates: yeh i got the trance book too, but i knew i didnt need it but i wanted it its very cool but the dvds were damaged and i had to get new ones sent
b m: guys, i have to go now, send me the emails and we'll find the route of the problem
Robert Yates: ok ben
Guillaume m: ok
b m: have a good week both, i will send a bit more feedback via email for your mixes
Guillaume m: see you next week then
Robert Yates: lookin forward to it, cya
Guillaume m: ok thank
b m: have a good week!
b m: bye
Guillaume m: u too
b m has left the conference.

Guillaume m has left the conference.

Robert Yates has left the conference.
