Studio Costs  Reply with quote

Ok I am not too sure where to post this, so this seemed the best place.

I currently have a home recording studio setup. Consisting of Pro Tools M-Powered with the M-Audio Project Mix Controller, Reason 3.0 and Reaktor 5, BX8 Monitors and several microphone.

Basically when I was in college we recorded this band, and now they want me to record some more songs for them. (great!) Now the band is just two acoustic guitars and vocals, although I can see myself adding things in such as Bass or Cello.

So anyway, now they are very keen to record and are willing to pay me "the going rate". And that is where i really don't know. How much should I be charging them? It is not a professional sound proofed studio, just my home using D.I.Y acoustic treatment.

Has anyone else had experience of this, recording at home? I don't wanna charge too much but I also don't wanna to do it to cheap!

Cheers

There is no industry rate.

It's an interesting business this one, I mean it's pretty much like the Robin Hood story, you take from the rich if they have it.

In this instance the guys probably do not have a lot of money, so if you charge them a high rate they might not go fo it.

Also in your consideraton you should ask yourself how much long term benefit might this project bring for me. For example let's say you do the job cheaply, well if that demo gets a lot of listens and you get your name established in your area then the cost is meaningless, you'll benefit from further work.

If on the other hand the band have no followers and you get no work down the line, you might need to question is it worth your time.

This industry is about connection, period, and recommendations, and the rates are based on how good, widespread your last job was.

Hope that helps.
