| Recording & live sound micing a Cajon |
|
|
I have come across a few issues with micing a Cajon at a live gig and am anticipating the same issues when I have to record this instrument in a studio setting. I have used your basic dymanic mic placed at about a 45* angle and about 6" from the sound hole. There seems to be alot of sound pressure that comes out of that hole thus the angle and distance. The problem is I get occasional distortion especially at the lower frequencies but is not limited to those frequencies. I have used the filter pad on the mixer channel & EQ to control this but I can't seem to get rid of it all. I am considering a higher SPL mic such as a kick drum mic. Feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. |

Yeah, it seems like the mic you used couldnt handle those SPLs - thats why the EQs on the board were useless because the signal was distorting at source . It would definitely help to to use a mic that can handle better SPLs and as you said - kick drum mics may work very well. Although I've never really mic'd a Cajon, it might be a good idea to use a second condensor mic placed two or three feet away and blend it in with the dynamic. Of course this second mic will not work on stage - but could add to the texture of the sound when used in the studio environment. |

Sorry for the late answer, I'm new on that forum, ... but that can be usefull, ...
I did have to record a cajon few times in a studio situation, and the best way for me was to put a condenser mic (with a lrge diaph) at like 2 feet from the hole (maybee a bit closer, find the sweet spot). and then put a dynamic (senn 421) right in front of the beast just far enought so it's not in the way of the player. In this way, you can have a good bass in combination with a good slap, .. |
