Bass Guitar  Reply with quote

Hello, my friends have a black metal band, I understand it's best to record extreme vocals with a Dynamic mic, but they want to record Electric Bas-Guitar, how does one do that? I understand that bass generate high power, therefor cannot be connected directly to the soundcard, what's the solution?

DI/mic  Reply with quote

Hi Josef and welcome to ACF+!

You could either record the bass through a DI (Direct inject) box or mic the cabinet. Mic'ing the cabinet would mean you need to get the basic sound you want off that cabinet first and then creatively use the mic (basically - move the mic around until you find the sound you want). A DI box would mean that you bypass the amp/cabinet completely. Also you might not need a DI box incase your sound card has a DI/instrument unput.

For more info about DI boxes and microphone techniques when mic'ing a cabinet do post or look around the forums as there have been loads of such discussion in the past.

Oh.. and another option (used very widely these days) is to record the bass through a DI box and then use a software/hardware amp/cabinet emulator to get the sound you want.

Mics and DI's  Reply with quote

or of course, if you have the track count, why not do both. alot of amps have built in DI boxes now which makes it really easy to do. Only use the built in DI if its a good quality amp though or you'll be shooting yourself in the foot.

If using both mic and DI, you may need to nudge the DI track a millisecond or so back in time to compensate for the distance the sound is travelling to reach the mic. it may not sound much but it can cause alot of problems without proper alignment
