Macbook pro with Firewire 410  Reply with quote

I just got the new macbook pro 15" with 2.2 Ghz and 2GB DDR2 SDRAM. I've tried running my firewire 410 on this machine and its given lots of problems. I've only gotten it to work once, I've noticed that the only way not to hot plug it is by unplugging the power adapter (to the computer as it powers the firewire 400 always when plugged in) before I plug in my firewire. It is selected as the audio device as both input and output under system preferences and I've noticed when the device powers up it doesn't go through the usual cycle of blinking red\green buttons. Only the blue power light comes on and blinks for awhile, then turns solid. I've heard that you shouldn't use an external power source when powering from the firewire. Also I'm completely updated on drivers. Please help, it used to work flawlessly on my g4 powerbook...

Firewire Ports  Reply with quote

Have you tried using it with the external power supply?

The MBP's dont provide a 'surge' of power to a device when plugged in like most devices do. Soundcards generally need this initial boost in order to start. So try it with the external PSU, you can probably unplug that once its started if you like.

You wont do any damage, unless its a really awful unit it will have protection diodes to prevent DC overload.

Also the macbook pro's have very noise firewire ports, Digidesign for example recommend getting a firewire card for the expresscard slot to cut down on these issues, and also for higher data rates.

Good luck

Solution to firewire 410 problem on macbook pro  Reply with quote

Thanks for the help, unfortunately after a few runs the firewire 410 started to not work again after using the ac adapter. After some trial and error while I was running a song in the background waiting for it to magically start working (like it had before) I opened the firewire's interface and noticed that it was actually getting the input signal but the output not being read. The solution was to go to the output section of the hardware and click the reset button. This restores the hardware back to default settings and now it works properly. I don't know why the settings are changed, or why they change back (I have to reset every time I turn the computer back on) but at least there's a solution

Trash/Reinstall?  Reply with quote

The 410 is a fussy piece of hardware! I've met people who swear by it and then there others (like me) who have always had problems with it.

I too initially had a similar problem when i started using it but now it seems to have sorted itself out (had this problem with and without bus power). Though I feel the problems I've had is more to do with the firewire card.

bmdeehan, are you talking about the M-Audio FW Software interface settings that have to be reset every time? Maybe just try uninstalling and reinstalling the software interface/drivers or if trash the preferences if you can find it.
