mrbisto: yo
rmuse23: And Ben, how are you and your new Mandolin?
the_electrosushi: good thx, now that the exam is done it's all a different life
rmuse23: Hi Chris
mrbisto: hi there
mrbisto: A very happy xmas to you all
rmuse23: Mr Bisto, that is you Chris?
mrbisto: Yes tis me
ben_audiocourses: mandolin is good thanks ron
the_electrosushi: merry xmas folks
ben_audiocourses: happy xmas all
rmuse23: How was the stay in hospital?
ben_audiocourses: and well done everyone with the exams!
mrbisto: Oh joyful I had a wonderful vacation!
rmuse23: It was very stressful, that exam was.
mrbisto: Lovely 5 day break in ward 5
rmuse23: I was there a bit during the term
mrbisto: Ah the exam was stressful? surely not... I have it on good authority you were all very able.
rmuse23: I couldn't ever call it lovely or a break.
the_electrosushi: really? nice... I actually almost hitted the 3 hours to write it all
mrbisto: wow, that's good going!
rmuse23: Oh yes, very difficult.
the_electrosushi: i'm just hoping all for the best
rmuse23: Exams are just not fun, but so glad to have it over.
ben_audiocourses: i'm sure everyone did very well
the_electrosushi: your optimism is so great ben
ben_audiocourses: hehe
the_electrosushi:
mrbisto: I'm sure too, ben told me how hard you'd all worked
ben_audiocourses: yes pretty much everyone put 100% in this year
rmuse23: I hope so, I know we all worked hard and learned so much it's hard to imagine and process all the information
the_electrosushi: it was well intense...
mrbisto: intense rocks.. Audiocourses.com is intense, we love that reputation.
mrbisto:
the_electrosushi: but so was xmas!
rmuse23: Good word Ed, intense was a word my wife heard all term.
ben_audiocourses: yes it is intense but hopefully what you've learnt will stick with you for a long long time
rmuse23: Forever for me
the_electrosushi: that's the plan
rmuse23: Christmas was quite nice too.
the_electrosushi: oh yes
ben_audiocourses: good!
mrbisto: was santa kind to you?
the_electrosushi: audio-presents?
rmuse23: Except I didn't get that anniversary U87
mrbisto: do you think he knew how hard you'd worked?
ben_audiocourses: doh, santa never listens hard enough
rmuse23: I hope he did
mrbisto: Hope so too, he often forgets to unplug his filters.
rmuse23: I got one of those awesome iPhones.
ben_audiocourses: wow
mrbisto: Oh.. do u like it?
ben_audiocourses: they're pretty expensive over here
rmuse23: It is very cool. Yes, expensive here too.
the_electrosushi: yes... too overpriced
mrbisto: they have a sexy advertisment, all the cools kids want one
rmuse23: I got my wife one, and she got me one, unbeknownst to each other.
mrbisto: wow, crazy odds
rmuse23: Just can't record with it. It does everything else though
the_electrosushi: there are ome attempts for make a drum pad out of an iphone
rmuse23: Ooh, I wouldn't go thumping on it
ben_audiocourses: i'm looking forward to getting a phone i can run cubase on
mrbisto: lol
the_electrosushi: eheh
rmuse23: Ben, do you play the mandolin?
rmuse23: Pro Tools?
mrbisto: i love mandolin
the_electrosushi: so you can work also on the bus then
rmuse23: I hate my pro tools
ben_audiocourses: well i'm learning now - very different to guitar, tuned in 5ths etc
rmuse23: Like a cello?
ben_audiocourses: GDAE from low to high
ben_audiocourses: like violin et al i believe
the_electrosushi: nice
rmuse23: Just a lovely sounding instrument
mrbisto: indeed
ben_audiocourses: not in my hands lol
mrbisto: im sure they will change
mrbisto: that
the_electrosushi: could be handy for some spinal tap guitar solos
ben_audiocourses: thing is i'm learning 2 methods at once - the folk methods with open strings and sustain etc and the bluegrass method with no open strings and no sustain
rmuse23: I learned how to mike up a harp this week from an engineer at Skywalker Ranch
ben_audiocourses: the lucas place?
rmuse23: Yep
ben_audiocourses: nice
mrbisto: now the harp is one seriously crazy instrument.
rmuse23: Very cool though. I couldn't play it
ben_audiocourses: was it a lever harp?
rmuse23: I don't know, it did have a couple of pedals for key changes I think
ben_audiocourses: ah ok
ben_audiocourses: lever harp is very similar to playng a piano but with the non scale notes removed
ben_audiocourses: quite logical
the_electrosushi: thx for the note
ben_audiocourses: pedal harps may be different though
rmuse23: It sounds very similar
mrbisto: I got a Zune, 2nd Gen
mrbisto: 80g
ben_audiocourses: ooh very nice
rmuse23: no kidding,
the_electrosushi: nice, is it better than the ipod?
rmuse23: lots of music and podcasts
mrbisto: blows the iPod away in my experience
mrbisto: for a start is DRM free... and plays mp3sa
rmuse23: how so Chris?
mrbisto: wavs
mrbisto: it also has wireless synch
mrbisto: which is neat...
ben_audiocourses: excellent!
rmuse23: My ipod only does mp3 and no wireless synch
rmuse23: I would love that feature alone
mrbisto: basically you dont have to plug it in, it will synch with your music directory through wireless
ben_audiocourses: my ipod is an old 2gb model and is probably antiquated already
rmuse23: very cool
mrbisto: also the ear buds are the best I have heard..
mrbisto: and comfy
ben_audiocourses: i think 2008 will be a make or break year for apple in the music sphere
mrbisto: those rubber ones
the_electrosushi: that's nice... the wifi synch
mrbisto: rubber tubes you push in your ears, so comfy and good bass response
rmuse23: mine is 80g and way too much space.
ben_audiocourses: just got a PS3 (free!) from my phone network supplier and i can't get the bugger to sync to my wirelsss media streamer at all
rmuse23: My wife got herself some of those buds
ben_audiocourses: heard good things about those phones
the_electrosushi: I still stuck with the first generation ipod nano (present from the company)
rmuse23: PS3 the game?
ben_audiocourses: ps3 the console - the sony playstation 3
rmuse23: I am jealous now
the_electrosushi: eheh
ben_audiocourses: mobile phone networks over here throw crazy gifts at you if you sign up
ben_audiocourses: i don't know how they make any profit?!?
rmuse23: we get more minutes, that's all
the_electrosushi: I got a Minimoog voyager this xmas
rmuse23: wow
ben_audiocourses: oooh minimoog
ben_audiocourses: how you getting on with it?
rmuse23: I am extra jealous
ben_audiocourses: we need a range of jealous emoticons
the_electrosushi: bling bling
the_electrosushi:
ben_audiocourses: going from slightly envious to green with envy!
rmuse23: me too ben
rmuse23: thou shalt not covet?
mrbisto: X-(
the_electrosushi: it took 2 months, but in the end it arrived on the 24th
ben_audiocourses: :-& imagine thats envy and not nausea#
rmuse23: lol
ben_audiocourses: hehe don't get me onto religion ron
mrbisto: oh go on ben
ben_audiocourses: no i will ruin everyones evening if not year lol
mrbisto: not mine
mrbisto:
mrbisto: lol
the_electrosushi: eheh
ben_audiocourses: haha
rmuse23: I know, it will get ugly. I am a confirmed atheist, and a zen buddhist
mrbisto: I am a confirmed atheist also
ben_audiocourses: religion and music technology DON'T MIX
ben_audiocourses:
mrbisto: and a pasty worshiper
rmuse23: LOL
ben_audiocourses: i'm more of a fundamentalist atheist
the_electrosushi: I believe in tubes amps...
rmuse23: I do worship tubes
the_electrosushi: "they have what it takes"
mrbisto: I would self flagulate for some decent harmonic distortion
rmuse23: fundamentalist atheist? what is that
rmuse23: Oh I'm dying laughing now
ben_audiocourses: yes there is a slight irony!
the_electrosushi: eheh
ben_audiocourses: haha
rmuse23: I didn't know that distortion helped in the summing mix
rmuse23: just learned that from sound on sound
ben_audiocourses: well whether it helps or not is subjective
mrbisto: kinda happened by default with old analogue gear
ben_audiocourses: a classical or jazz musician would say it doesn't
mrbisto: now we gotta add it
rmuse23: the more I read/study, the more I realize I don't know anything
ben_audiocourses: exactly, the thing is we are all SO used to hearing distortion we think that it is natural
ben_audiocourses: when in fact it is not
rmuse23: Yes, digital is too clean
the_electrosushi: so true
rmuse23: it isn't
ben_audiocourses: well digital is actually as clean as what you put in
ben_audiocourses: analogue is as clean as you put in minus distortion and noise
ben_audiocourses: and compression from tape etc
rmuse23: I love the analogue sound though
ben_audiocourses: thing is everyone has grown up listening to analogue recordings
ben_audiocourses: so that is what we think of as good
ben_audiocourses: and i agree
rmuse23: very true
ben_audiocourses: i prefer the analogue 'sound'
rmuse23: it's hard to beat a good 'clean' tape saturation
ben_audiocourses: although it is technicall inferior, yet paradoxically it is theoretically better!#
rmuse23: oh oh, getting deep ben
ben_audiocourses: hehe
mrbisto: its ok he is a geek
mrbisto: he is allowed
ben_audiocourses: anything analogue will be theoretically better than digital due to the non binary nature of the measurement
the_electrosushi: especially live, analog is much better, but of course bulkier and a bit tempramental
rmuse23: definitely geeky there ben
ben_audiocourses: :-B
rmuse23: isn't it odd that there are so many plugins to add that tape sound?
rmuse23: work so hard for a clean recording then try to 'dirty it up'
ben_audiocourses: it seems self defeating but it is also quite logical in that everyone wants to add what digital is missing
ben_audiocourses: by missing i don't mean inferior
rmuse23: not inferior, just...different??
the_electrosushi: cleaner?
mrbisto: subjectively more pleasing?
ben_audiocourses: analogue is dirtier, no doubt about it
rmuse23: that is right chris
the_electrosushi: eheh
ben_audiocourses: or at least the implemenations we have of it are
ben_audiocourses: but we've all grown up with analogue
ben_audiocourses: one way or another
mrbisto: I miss compact cassette sometimes too
rmuse23: I still use it for vocals and then run it into digital
ben_audiocourses: i've been recording a female singer songwriter recently and i'm thinking of bouncing down the mix to cassette and then back again
the_electrosushi: I read an article about a juornalist who asked to reintroduce the vinyl
ben_audiocourses: get a bit of 'roudness' (i.e. treble roll off)
the_electrosushi: as a commercial media
rmuse23: yep
the_electrosushi: dump the cd for the vinyl
rmuse23: cd's are great
the_electrosushi: yes but you can burn tons of them with your mp3s
ben_audiocourses: thing is ultimately we have to look at the MP3 as the format of the future - as much as many other formats are superior, joe bloggs will want mp3s in the future, nothing else
rmuse23: if vinyl would fast forward, I would stick with it
rmuse23: don't mp3's sound 'off'?? they do to me
ben_audiocourses: they do to most people who work with audio
ben_audiocourses: BUT#
ben_audiocourses: we're not the demographic, it is your 15 year old with iPod headphones or your 40 year old housewives listening no mono radios that buy music in mass numbers
ben_audiocourses: on not no
rmuse23: I think that is so true ben
ben_audiocourses: mp3s at low bitrates are the worst of the lot in my opinion
ben_audiocourses: but we've reached an odd conjecture
ben_audiocourses: where quality is no longer the focal point
ben_audiocourses: accessiblity and transportability are
ben_audiocourses: some of the videos on youtube make me want to weep as they are such low quality
rmuse23: yes, audiophiles are becoming extinct
ben_audiocourses: yet i've read that people are looking at distributing soaps and films via YT in the future
mrbisto: doesnt
mrbisto: even
mrbisto: have
mrbisto: stero
mrbisto: stereo
mrbisto: :-O
ben_audiocourses: it's an odd time to be concerned about audio
rmuse23: even ipods sound bad to me because the stereo field is too odd
the_electrosushi: it's indeed a dynamic situation
ben_audiocourses: video obviously has a few new formats to worry about - blu ray, HD-DVD etc - yet the newer audio formats have been shunned in favour of smaller file sizes
rmuse23: good one ed
rmuse23: then why do engineers work so hard to get the perfect sound?
rmuse23: just put up one mic and tell the band to play
ben_audiocourses: because we take pride in our work
the_electrosushi: I sure do
the_electrosushi: b-)
mrbisto: And also it's a creative channel, a need we have
ben_audiocourses: at the very least i want to be happy with the recording, even if everyone else is listening via a tin can and string
mrbisto: a strive for perfection of satisfaction in ourselves
mrbisto: to an extent
rmuse23: I'm right there with you guys
mrbisto: however, I totally feel capturing the emotion of what ever it is, is far more important
rmuse23: I try to get people to hear a good recording and they just look at me as if I'm daft
ben_audiocourses: interesting times ahead i feel - i think eventually, as internet speeds increase and portable media devices increase in capacity, we will start distributing wav or FLAC rather than MP3
ben_audiocourses: which is obviously good for us audiophiles
rmuse23: do you think so?
ben_audiocourses: i hope so
rmuse23: that would be very cool indeed
ben_audiocourses: its already practical to move FLACS around in most places
ben_audiocourses: wavs are still quite large though
mrbisto: friend of mine sent a hard drive over to me all batched flac'd
ben_audiocourses: but bandwidth will increase i'm sure
ben_audiocourses: FLAC is great
rmuse23: the listening public needs to be educated
rmuse23: what is FLAC exactly?
ben_audiocourses: although in my own tests not much more efficient than RAR for compression but without the deconpression times
ben_audiocourses: http://flac.sourceforge.net/
ben_audiocourses: lossless audio compression
ben_audiocourses: so no quality is lost
rmuse23: you've got my attention
ben_audiocourses: check it out - it is probably the most widely accepted lossless compression at this time
ben_audiocourses: i think you can get up to 50% reduction although 30-40% is more typical
ben_audiocourses: dependent on program material
ben_audiocourses: of course we need the modern portable media players to support this
ben_audiocourses: for it to really get into the publics mind
rmuse23: I there lies the problem
ben_audiocourses: absolutely, everyone wants proprietary formats that help support the monopoly (i.e apple)
rmuse23: they are trying to dominate the market in the states
ben_audiocourses: i've ended up using anapod - http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ - on my iPod so i can put any music i like on there without iTunes getting involved
rmuse23: just like pro tools
ben_audiocourses: absolutely - america is rich pickings for monopolists!
ben_audiocourses: being so cut off geographically and culturally yet with the population and spending power it is a marketing mans dream!!
rmuse23: the god damned corporations and Bush have fucked us over
rmuse23: oops,
ben_audiocourses: agree with you totally ron
mrbisto: lol
ben_audiocourses: although england isn't far behind
rmuse23: I want so bad to live in England
ben_audiocourses: right guys i've only got another 5 mins or so - got friends from chicago over on there last night
rmuse23: you don't know how bad it is here
the_electrosushi: I am actually moving to spain soon also because of that
ben_audiocourses: at least you're aware of it ron - most americans i've met seem oblivious
rmuse23: didn't you get lost in the wrong part of Chicago once
ben_audiocourses: haha well remembered
ben_audiocourses: south side wasn't too pretty lol
rmuse23: Just gets me in trouble
rmuse23: south side is downright dangerous
ben_audiocourses: north side of chicago was great though
rmuse23: very beautiful people
ben_audiocourses: absolutely, guys with 1 arm and 1 leg with no teeth stopping cars and trying to reach inside to beg
ben_audiocourses: that was my experience of south side
mrbisto: They just liked you Ben
ben_audiocourses: hehe, i think they liked crack better to be honest
rmuse23: everyone likes ben
rmuse23: especially 1 arm, 1 leg types
ben_audiocourses: lol
ben_audiocourses: i do tend to attract the monopeds
rmuse23: lol
mrbisto: Right people
rmuse23: I still love the UK
the_electrosushi: eheh
mrbisto: I hope you have a fruitful 08, and do stay in touch.
ben_audiocourses: yes absolutely - it's been a pleasure to teach you 2
the_electrosushi: you too guys, it has been a reat year with you
rmuse23: okay Chris, enrolling soon
the_electrosushi: great
the_electrosushi: good luck ron
rmuse23: Experience not soon forgotten
ben_audiocourses:
mrbisto: and the good news is, we'll have full degrees online soon
ben_audiocourses: oh yes
mrbisto: Will be public with that news soon
rmuse23: You too Ed, try to keep in touch
rmuse23: I will be watching that Chris
the_electrosushi: catch me in chat....Happy new year
ben_audiocourses: happy new year ed <
mrbisto: Its because of students like you that we have moved up a gear and forged a wonderful partnership
ben_audiocourses: seconded

ben_audiocourses: right see you in the new year guys!
