Permenately Deleting Audio  Reply with quote

I have a question that hopefully somebody will be able to help me with. It's been buggin' me for a while now. How do you delete the excess audio from a wave, permenetly. I don't want to trim it (trim tool). I want to delete the audio permentely but not the whole wave just the before and after noise/audio. With all the methods i've tried, once the excess audio has been deleted, I am always able to bring that excess audio back via the trim tool. I'd prefer for the excess audio to not be there at all and be gone for good. If you can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried the method below but it does not work. The Permanent Delete Option is gray and unable to be selected. Any other possible methods to resolve my problem will be much appreciated.

*Part 1
Take the selector tool [>>>] (you may have to Zoom in to see the noise), put the cursor directly in front the noise. Use SEPARATE REGION COMMAND (Hold the [CTRL] key and press the [E] key at the same time). Then double click the separated section THAT YOU DON'T WANT so it highlights. Press [BACKSPACE] or [DELETE] and it should be gone.

*Part 2
Make sure you follow this carefully so you don't screw up your session. Go to the Menu on the far right side of the screen (you should see a listing of all the audio regions in the session). If you click on the gray bar on the top of the menu, you'll see the option [SELECT ALL UNUSED REGIONS]. Click that, then go to [CLEAR SELECTION]. It'll prompt you to erase and be mindful that you'll never get what you deleted back since it deletes that whole region from disk.
MAKE SURE YOU CLICK [CLEAR SELECTION] and NOT [CLEAR ALL].

This Does Not Work For Me. Please Help

Im using 7.4

I mainly just want my files to be free of excess audio. For example if i send a session to someone I don't want them to be able to hear me coughing, laughing, or warming up. Catch my drift. That damn trim tool no matter what method of deletion I use always recovers the audio and I want it gone for good. Is it even possible? Please help me.

Consolidation  Reply with quote

its a little tricky to think without having the program in front of me, but the best way i can think of doing this is to select the regions u want to keep, then 'Consolidate' and this will bounce each file to a new audio file.

Then you can do the Part 2 you described in your first post, select unused and delete. let me know how this goes.

P.s. If you are sending to a client best thing to do is save a copy of the session with the 'Save Copy In...' command on the file menu, tick the all audio files box and save. then it will have a fresh folder heirarchy etc. and look much neater.

Hi Pharell!

Pro Tools in fact has an option such as this - to delete unused areas of a region. First select all the regions used in your session (select all tracks and then hit Ctrl+A). Then go to the region list (the list on the right) and enter the region menu and then click on 'Compact..'. You can then specify the 'padding amount' (how much of a head and tail Pro Tools should leave before deleting the rest of the unused areas of a region). Click on 'Compact' and PT will take care of the rest.

You can then delete unused regions to reduce your session size.

Hope this helps.
