Hi,

there are a couple of techniques you can try, firstly think of where on the instrument the sound is coming from and place your mic there. remember to use a windshield if u do this or move the mic off axis slightly.

secondly, and by far the best technique is to ask the musician to play and do one of two things. get your favourite mic, a small diaphragm condenser would probably suit best and turn it up quite loud and route it through to a pair of closed back headphones. then just hold the mic in your hand and move it around listening through the headphones until you find the sweet spot, get it on a stand and away you go.

alternatively stick your finger in one ear, so you are effectively hearing in mono and move your head around the instrument, you are listening for where the sound is most full bodied and resonant. if you find the right spot get the mic there and have a listen to make sure it sounds nice and full. then you may want to add some high end EQ to give it more air and sparkle. again be careful they arent blowing straight into a mic, try pointing the mic off-axis a little if its to hard sounding.

Dont agonise for ages over the mic position, use the technique above and go with gut instinct, if you find a place that sounds really full and round get the mic there and listen, your ears are your greatest tool.
