compression  Reply with quote

Chrish and Ben I came accross this yesterday and I thought i,d share it!

I'm still studing it and will have some questions.

this is out of one of my recording manuals " Magix music studio 7"

Menu: Effects

This option processes the dynamics of an audio sample. The dynamics algorithms work in a look-ahead fashion to eliminate peak distortions or other artifacts. The graphics display always indicates the actual dynamics curve.
All parameter changes can be previewed in real-time by pressing the Preview button.

Mode

Dynamics - Compressor

The dynamics algorithm chosen is similar to that of a ‘classic’ compressor.
The dynamic of a frequency band is limited, loud sections are reduced (compressed), and soft audio sections maintain their level. This setting is used if the compression is to result in a coloration of the audio material without causing the volume to rise.
The compression ratio is configured with the Ratio control, the threshold with the Threshold setting. Attack and release are controlled with Attack and Release.

Also, part of the control mechanism is the gain output labeled Output.
(There is therefore no adverse effect on the other parameter settings.)

Dynamics - Compressor/Maximizer

The dynamics of a frequency band are limited, loud passages stay loud, and soft audio sections become louder. This setting is often used to add presence to audio material and make it more prevalent, or to increase the loudness. Other terms for this type of processing are ‘Maximizer’ or ‘Loudness Enhancer’. The compression ratio is determined by the Ratio control. The threshold is set with Threshold, and attack and release with Attack and Release.

Dynamics – Limiter

Only the loud passages (above the threshold level) are reduced, soft passages remain unchanged. Limiters are used, to reduce the appearance of large level peaks without changing the overall dynamic. After the limiter process the overall level can be raised through normalization without having to fear clipping or distortion.

Dynamics – Limiter/Maximizer

Like Comp. Max. with Ratio 1:infinity

Dynamics - Expander

The dynamics of a piece are increased, loud passages stay loud, soft passages (below threshold level) become even softer. Dynamic expansion is often used for voice-overs that display a high distortion level. Through the expansion the spoke voice is lifted above the level of the noise, this in turn is suppressed. Keep in mind, that for an expansion a certain level reserve must exist to avoid clipping!

Dynamics - Gate

Very soft passages (below the threshold level) are reduced or completely pulled to zero. With this function the noise between passages can be completely eliminated or reduced to a minimum level. This works especially well if high compression ratios are applied (> 5) without wanting to amplify noise on the tracks.
Dynamics – Ratio
This parameter changes the amount of the effect – ‘1.0’ means no effect is added.

Dynamics - Threshold

Here you can set the threshold level for the dynamics effects. Depending on the selected setups, material below this level is processed in a different way than above the level.

Dynamics – Attack

Here you can change the time it takes to reduce the level prior to loud peaks (attacks) in your audio material.

Dynamics - Release

Here you can change the time it takes to release the soft passages in your audio material.

Dynamics - Gate Level

This parameter indicates the level below which the volume of the audio material is decreased to 0.
Dynamics – Gain
Shifts overall output level to compensate level cut
