| Compression What the F** is it? questions |
|
|
Hello all, I'm new to this, however, I have a question that might sound stupid, but i always wondered.
The formula of Dynamic range being a logarithmic expresion of 2 parameters, resulting in dB. When looking at any software compressor graphs I notice negative dB in the axis OUT/IN. Why are these Db negative numbers?
does it mean attenuation? standarization? what's the acoustic meaning of the 0 dB point?
Thank you |

This is basically about reference levels.
Alll studios operate at a reference level, so compatibility exists between them and the equipment. If you look at a mixing desk the operating level (best place for optimum performance) is 0dB.
0db is usually referenced to 0.775 volts. Therefore, +6dB is 1.4 volts (there about) and -6dB is about 350 milli volts. (there about).
The graphs on the compressor are merely indicated like everything else in the studio.
More info about referecne levels and meters here:

Does that help?
